IQ - check
focus speed - check
light gathering -
the 70-300 G steps down quite quickly to 5.6 (quicker than the 70-400) & Scotland can be a pretty dim place outside the summer (heck, even during summer). Short of trying 1 or finding someone who uses it in the same conditions your guess is as good as ...

I'm thinking of going to Knockhill this Sunday, want to tag along?

I know its the aperature that worrys me the most about it everything else seems amazing!
I'd love to Scott but I'm away for work :(

Cheers mate, I've been a bit wary of a 200mm was worried it would be too short.

dont be, if you need 300mm, get a 1.4x(280mm) convertor... sorted. no affect on AF or quality.

the teleconvertor will depend on which lens you buy?

the sigma lens, get the sigma convertor
sony lens, get the sony convertor:shrug:

if you want to see the 70-200, give me a shout.

i would stick to getting the same brand as the lens, least then you know it is going to work. for the new sigma 70-200, only the mkII teleconvertor will work.

price may seem good from the US, till you get customs and VAT.
also, you loose out on the 3 year UK warranty....
you pays your money, i know what i would do:shrug:

Picked up a Tamron Adaptall 2 thingy on Ebay, so I can now go from this...

Woohoo!-ish!

However I can't take a shot - the A900 says "lens not attached"!

I've googled and it appears there is a Menu option in the "cog" menu but I'm damend if I can find it.... so how do I talk my A900 into releasing the shutter?

Sorted... had to put the A900 into "M" mode and it'll release OK. It meters OK, need to adjust shutter speed manually (shame I can't shoot in "A" but no hardship!)

My (Nikon fit) Tamron Adaptall 2 ring.

Very nice to be able to use the same lens on both bodies :)

Added: Actually I understand why "A" mode won't work - I need to adjust the aperture on the body!!
I can shoot "A" mode on my D700, and get the correct EXIF as the lens reports aperture back to the body.

I did take a look last night and couldn't find the menu item. I think this was on the a700, but is not on the a900. Now yhou mention it, I do remember some people complaining about this option being missing on the a900 (on Dyxum).

Glad to hear that you've cracked it. I wonder whether this is to do with the adapter not having any electrical connections? Not sure as I've not gone down this road.

It does seem very strange seeing the same lens on both cameras! ;)

Thanks for checking, at least I know I'm not going blind / mad (delete as appropriate!)

I suspect it is due to being no electrical contacts.. its a bit odd it only works in "M" but but I guess as (unlike on the D700) the lens isn't reporting its aperture back it makes sense.

Anyhow the adapter was a bargain, a genuine one for £23 delivered so I'm happy!

Its not as usable on the A900 mind but it's a handy thing to have and silly sharp.

Hi

Welcome - I'm sure some of the more experienced Sony guys will be along with advice, I still struggle to remember how to turn mine on

Hi all Sony owners, I have a a300 and I am having a problem with dust spots on my photo's, I have been told these may be dust bunnies? on the sensor.
Is there anybody in the South Wales area who would be awilling to clean this for me, I would not expect this to be done for nothing.
Any offers
Alan

For sale: Sony 70-300G & KM 70-200/4 (beercan)
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=144493

Not sure if anyone here is interested?

Reason for sale:
I've worked out that I use the 70-200 range more than 70-300, and would like a faster aperture for portraits. So I'm selling these two lenses to fund a 70-200/2.8.

I'm sure I'll need something longer once I've sold, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

Anyone here use the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX HSM on Sony?

Very tempted by one on Ebay.. I have one already in Nikon fit.

-Andy

Yes and it's a very nice lens.

Think the only issue with the lens are the colours are a tad neutral (which I guess is the same for the Nikon version)

OK I might go for it, its a Grey Import though, but he reckons VAT has been paid.

I generally avoid Grey but I might have to go for it....

stan the man,do I have the same problem ?...or is this the source of modern day UFO sightings :D

Wales must be particularly dusty
