C&C. Got worse?

Couldn't agree more with Dav.

As a newbie to photography
C&C is very important to me, as the only way to improve is for someone to point out my mistakes.

I can't leave C&C for other members, Yet! but if I like what I see I will say so. Not
Sure if I will anymore as some members seem to think NICE SHOT is a way for me
to up my post count.

As has been said before, you don't need to offer necessarily improvement advice... just think "nice shot" and see if you can expand on it:

* I like the colours
* I like the way the composition suggests XYZ
* I like the dog/car/mountain/girl, you've picked a good interesting subject that I like.

And so on, but any of it expands on the "nice shot" that seems to annoy many.

I always do my best to check the unanswered posts and offer what comments I can. Due to the sheer number I only usually comment on those that move me in some way.

It would be nice if we had some way to identify 'positive contributors'.

I think many members don't contribute do to a belief that they lack the requisit level of knowledge to post meaningful comments - I'd say, viewing and thinking about photographs and offering comments is one way to improve your own photography skills.

Post and be damned!

Do you think that the term C&C may be at fault here?

Is it 'Comments and Criticism' or 'Comments and Critique' (I prefer the latter).

Many will be averse to criticising anothers efforts whereas comments are easily and readily made.

Criticising is a form of 'put down'.

Critique, on the other hand requires some form of expertise.

Dictionary Def is -

Perhaps a 'What is your honest opinion' thread would be better.

Then folk, newbies especially, might be more inclined to make comments which would be just as helpful to the Tog and could be used to form a fair critique overall.

On another photo site I frequented a lot we had similar discussions and settled on "CC" to mean "Constructive Comments", which seemed to work quite well.

We felt that "Constructive" suggested a positive approach, as in "helpful", but that did not mean the comments themselves had to be "positive". Some of the most helpful comments I received were negative. It was a very friendly site though and people would use approaches like

"I wonder - have you tried/thought of ....",
"Do you think it might benefit from..."
"FWIW my preference is ....., but YMMV of course",
"Is it my [tired old eyes/imagination/monitor], or [do I see a bit of a colour cast there/is there a lot of detail being lost in those very dark shadows]?"

And we also felt able to ask other members about how they had achieved particular results that we liked the look of/were fascinated by. And that would sometimes produce some very useful information.

If you notice the section header where you post is called "Photo Critique and Sharing"

So can we really blame all the members and the site is a minority of people misinterpret this as Comments and Criticism

One reason why I am taking a break is that personally, I think the quality of pics in the general photo sharing forum has gone down. there seems to be a litter of avarage pics that I just cannot be bothered to comment on.

the recent pics of window dummies was in my opinion a refreshing change and an uplift in quality-I stated this when commenting on the pic itself.

Isn't that part of the problem if everyone decides not to comment because the photo is average then how is that person supposed to know where they need to improve.

My last word on this subject is :

Everyone decides not to comment on average photos = quality of photos gets worse then people don't use the site we lose members and the few that are left get lonely.:'(
