Buying tyres online

That sounds like one to google (y)

Thought the same but their prices are £40 per tyre more than I just paid & that includes fitting.
Once again it shows that shopping around gives the best results

However the convenience could be worth the extra but at £160 for 4 tyres then I am happy to go to a garage & have them fitted. (will even do them myself it its cheaper & I can ensure the quality of the workmanship + I can ensure how tight the wheel nuts are so I can get them off again)

Wow that is a big difference. Yes definitely worth shopping around.

The last set of 4 tyres that I purchased on line saved me £200.
I went around the local garages (big & small) & no one could match the price. I was even shown by one garage the price they pay from the supplier & that was cheaper than I had been quoted.
However, I think a lot of this comes down to the fact that I have 19 inch rims on the car & if I had smaller (13-17 inch) then the garage price would be a lot closer to the e-retailer.
I think a lot of that comes down to the fact that the average retailer won't hold 19 inch tyres in stock but order them in hence not getting the discounts

I agree, smaller more average sizes are more closely priced but I think shopping around can give you good savings.
However building up a good relationship with your small local independent garage can be quite fruitful. ;)

I use etyres, have done for years as the local trader lives next close and goes to the same pub as me. Always as cheap as anywhere else I've found, especially when you factor in fitting and convenience (they come to you).

Unless you're in a tearing hurry for the tyre, you can tell the retailer that you can wait for their next stock delivery, otherwise you may well end up getting stung for delivery of your rubber (and I'll bet they get some other stuff in on the same truck while they're at it - at your delivery cost...)

Camskill are probably the cheapest but you have to factor in the cost of getting them fitted locally

For mail order tyres, I've just used tyreleader.com
Found them to be slightly cheaper then camskill with free delivery.

Nice one, never heard of that one. Good to learn about another supplier. Just done a comparison for my tyres and the price came out really well. However don't forget the fitting cost, as when I added those it came out as exactly the same as others inclusive of fitting including mobile fitters. So always compare like for like.

My tyre size is a little unusual and when I wanted winter tyres last year (which incidentally turned out to be a bit overkill) I was really disappointed with the lack of choice in most local fitters. Lots of cheap Chinese tyres or very expensive ones in Kwik Fit making it about £550 fitted. So I went to German company Tyre Leader and paid about £320 which bought me a brill reviewed premium tyre at local Chinese prices or less . I bought my Nokians in the exact size and speed/xl that I wanted and they arrived at a nominated local tyre/exhaust place a few days later. I paid them £10 a corner to fit and chuck my old tyres. Although we didn't have snow the Nokians incidentally were faultless in the cold/wet and frost, genuinely never slipped at all. In about April, I found Formula 1 were doing the best price on a set of 'summer' tyres, Goodyear Efficient Grip Sport. They were happy to hand me my winter tyres back and will fit them later this year. They fitted my new Goodyears. The Goodyears, no complaints, quiet, grippy, been very good in the wet, maybe not quite so perfect as my oid Toyo's in the dry, but recommended. Not as if I drive the car to the limit anyway. Anyway, the real point is mail order worked for me and can't see anything wrong with using local tyre fitting companies, they fit them just the same at an agreed price.

That's true. However a local tyre firm in my area charge £10inc per corner so for myself it works out cheaper.
It's probably due the size as well. A friend of mine is looking for some 16" tyres and for him there's hardly anything in going supply and fit.

Sounds like you found a good compromise there! Have you thought about getting a spare set of rims for your winter tyres? Ive got a Freelander and run 18inch wheels with M&S in the Summer and 17 inch wheels with the winter tyres - 17 inch winter tyres are a hell of a lot cheaper than 18s

I'd like a spare set of rims, but haven't found any secondhand - although I look occasionally and then forget. I'll likely only have this car another 10-18 months.
