Who uses BT for their BB & are they happy with the service they get ,as i am thinking of moving to them.:)

I use them for infinity 2 fibre, when I signed up they were the only people offering that speed. Service is fine though I had a lot of problems initially and had to drop down to a hub 4 and external fibre router to fix them as the hub 5 constantly dropped link. Since it works I constantly get good connection and I've never experienced slow downs or throttiling, though I doubt I'm in a heavy fibre usage are. They are very expensive compared to some the others in the field though, I rent my property at present and if I was confident of not having issues with contract length I'd at least look at other providers.

From our limited experience BT are fine.

We have been with them for at least 15/16 years and I can only recall one problem years ago.

The connection went down and I got through to a bloke in India who I think was following a script. I could not get him to understand that as every internet capable device in the house could not connect there was virtually no chance that the problem was with my PC. Other than that no problems. The speed isn't that fast compaed to some - about 6Meg, for our use it is OK, but I would like something faster. The only issue I have with BT is that we can't get BT Infinity even though we are only about a mile from the exchange and about 0.25 miles from the cabinet.

Dave

I do and have done for many years, never had many problems and the speed is OK for what I want. Still on ordinary BB, not too far from the exchange and get approx 15mbps, Infinity is a lot faster, dearer too, but fine if you want/need it.

What is the reason for that then Dave, Is the cab not enabled yet or maybe full?

Was thinking you might be fed direct, but you mentioned the cab, can't be a dacs otherwise you wouldn't get bb at all, just curious really.

Use BT Infinity without issue, always fast both up and down and i get full 80/20. Only thing i personally did was swap out the BT supplied router for an Asus one as i wanted something with more options.

What are you moving from and why?

No problems here either with BT broadband. Remember if there is a fault on any line a third party internet supplier may need to get BT engineers to check in an exchange. This means a possible delay in a fix, whereas BT have their own engineers in exchanges all the time, or were when I worked for BT, so should get a faster repair response time

Thanks for your replies guys,i should have said i can,t get virgin in my area,i am on fibre with plusnet at the moment,40/10.
But their service has went downhill a lot,so that is why i am looking to move.

Neil in theory yes but in practice??? doubt it. First of all you have to contact the other companies and explain the problem, then maybe they have to pass it on to the local exchange, or ask access for, so the BT engineers can check it out after doing BT work first. Remember I worked for BT for well over 20 years in exchanges and as a switchboard fitter. So don't believe all the hype these other service providers pump out.

Nice to hear from someone who knows a lot about it.:)

No preference should be given to BT by Openreach, all providers need to be treated equally.

I worked for BT over 38 years and had a key role in ADSL when it began, after that dealt with the many issues customers had with BB both copper and fibre.

One other thing Plusnet is owned by, you guessed it BT

Let me take you back to when private companies were allow to provide a telephone service. What happened? a private company installed a switchboard and up to where the BT lines were within a building. BT engineers were not allowed into the private company connection and the private company were not allowed into the BT connection point. Consequently the company didn't get a phone service. This carried on for several months and right up to government legislation level. We didn't want our work taken away from us so did nothing to help the poor customer who never knew about the issue until it was too late.
of course fibre optics were just coming in when i left so can only speak about the resentment of private companies entering the exchanges. We had to Sign the Official Secrets Act yet these other companies didn't have to so our hand were and still are tied to what we can and can't reveal. Once the Official secrets Act is signed that is for life. which even now does restrict what I can and can't say all these years on

in practice? yes.

work have used wholesale suppliers for many years and the service has always been excellent. in some cases better than what BT direct can manage.

e: put it this way, we've had +/-30 ASDL lines for about 10 years so I've had to raise more faults than most people have had hot meals. hand on heart using wholesalers does not equal worse service. sure not all wholesalers are good at what they do but that's a separate issue.

Neil it all depends experience with these companies, I can only say from my own

We have BT at the moment, TBH don`t seem to have that many issues whichever supplier we are with so I usually change to whoever offers the besrt deal when contract expires. Last few years BT>Sky>Plusnet> BT

I don't know. A few years ago the BT site suggested Infinity sould be available from, IIRC, Autumn 2013, but nothing happened.

The BT site now says that the exchange is 'Fibre enabled', which I guess doesn't mean much. The site also shows there are 8 stages to what they call, the Cabinet Fibre Journey (can't they use plain English?) and my cabinet is at stage 1, called "We are exploring solutions"

It also says - " We're working with government and industry to explore ways to bring Superfast fibre to as many people as possible but don't have a plan for your area yet. You might consider co-funding fibre access in your community. Knowing there's a healthy demand in your area can also really help. Register your interest here."

I'm guessing they originally considered your area as "not economically viable" some communities did fund or part fund it themselves, can end up not costing a fortune.

Worth contacting Openreach and asking how much it would cost for a fibre solution especially if enough households are interested

The reason i am looking to leave Plusnet after 5 years, is their customer service has really got quite bad since maybe the end of last year.
I tried to get a deal on a new contract, but they won,t do it,too busy giving free BB to new customers rather than look after loyal ones.
I can get a better deal with BT more or less on the same package.:)

With the unlmited BT Broaband you get the BT Sport app, BT Cloud and Net Protect Plus (anti virus, firewall etc)

BT is about the only provider for us.. we might be enjoying the beautiful countryside as location to live.. but we've only just seen out Internet speeds rise from 0.5MB to 2MB ... so no Fibre here.
Having said that.. the internet works without problems... (just have to drive 5 miles to catch a 4G signal when I need to upload 1GB of photos ;-) ).

Think you are correct. I would not mind if we were miles from anywhere but we are about 7 miles as the crow flies from central London.

Decision made, near the end of this month i will be moving to BT.:)

We're with BT and no real issues to note, we also have BT Sport - which is great for Moto GP

Got a hub 5 and it's okay - did have a few issues initially with it and was wondering wether to go back to hub 4, but all seems okay recently - no drop outs etc...

I have a HH5 which i picked up from ebay,it has been ok on plusnet.:)

Just got a very good deal with sky,so waiting now for a changeover:banana::clap:

I am with them for ADSL, our local cabinet is oversubscribed for Fibre so I am on a waiting list!

They have been fine, its worked since day one but their Fibre seems expensive compared to other providers.

I got a discount for 12 months,brilliant,:)

Had BT infinty 2 for a few years. Started at around 55mb down and 18mb up, past 12mnths though has changed to around 40mb down and 12mb up.

A table of my recent tests shows quite a variance depending on time of day.

I just got activated with BTinfinity yesterday,a good 12 month deal.:)

They made a complete hash of my order so i told them to forget it,glad i did, very happy with BT deal.:)

Good for you, I voted with my feet too, when Sky refused to do me a deal after 2yrs with them. Plenty of choice out there with deals galore.

There a lot of good deals if you shop around.:)

I am a BT Openreach Engineer so if you have any questions I'd be happy to help

Do you know what the latest firmware the H5 should be running as mine drops the wi-fi connection on occasions - wondering if an update might be available that's not automatically be applied ??
