Boys names

The old rule was, imagine what it sounds like as King .. .. or Queen .. ..

That generally keeps you with the ones that stand the test of time and then you just need to try and avoid ones that date the conception quite too obviously (e.g. William).

George, Edward, James, Ian.. they all have the advantage of sounding formal when needed, but with the option of a softer and less formal derivation (Dod, Ed/Ted, Jim/Jimmy, Jock). Something like Caleb, in addition to sounding like a posessed child from a horror movie (apologies to any Calebs in the audience) doesn't have an obvious short-form.

Middle names are good. I've known a few people decide to switch the name their known by from first to middle name to mark significant changes in their lives.

It really does depend on your surname though.

PS
Benton/Fenton should probably be avoided.. could be embarassing in the park..

I assume it's the same in England, but up here traditionally the first male child should be named after the paternal grandfather, the first female after the maternal grandmother and then maternal grandfather for the next male, paternal grandmother for the next female.

It's only in the last 50 years or so that this has fallen by the wayside, something that I, for one, am eternally grateful for :lol:

My mothers family used the maiden surnames from the maternal side as middle names for the girls. So my mothers elder sister takes her middle name from the maiden surname of her mother, my mother takes here middle name from the maiden surname of her maternal grandmother. It sounds odd, but works surprisingly well for Scots surnames providing you have a sensible christian name. Boys took their names from the christian names of the father's side.

I found that single syllable names are the best for yelling out
when they are playing up / messing around

Same in my mother's family, makes genealogical studies much easier. Heaven help anyone in 200 years time trying to trace their roots.....:lol:

Noah :}
Wonderful & rather unusual name ~ my hedgehog is called Noah.

I wanted my son to be called Starsky, or Colombo, My wife liked Jack. I said to SWMBO that every other kid is being named Jack, but why not make it a little different and name him Kojak... We settled for Theo in the end. But I still had other ideas like : Banachek, Templer, Regan, Bodie, Doyle, Cannon etc made great first names even though most were surnames from fave tv progs when I was younger.

Guess I'm old fashioned enough to go with the treaditional and/or Biblical names like John, James, David, Mathew, Mark, whatever, whatever. Remember that one day they'll have to put it on a job application, so steer clear of the Dingle names on Emmerdale! :thumbsdown:
