The old rule was, imagine what it sounds like as King .. .. or Queen .. ..
That generally keeps you with the ones that stand the test of time and then you just need to try and avoid ones that date the conception quite too obviously (e.g. William).
George, Edward, James, Ian.. they all have the advantage of sounding formal when needed, but with the option of a softer and less formal derivation (Dod, Ed/Ted, Jim/Jimmy, Jock). Something like Caleb, in addition to sounding like a posessed child from a horror movie (apologies to any Calebs in the audience) doesn't have an obvious short-form.
Middle names are good. I've known a few people decide to switch the name their known by from first to middle name to mark significant changes in their lives.
It really does depend on your surname though.

Benton/Fenton should probably be avoided.. could be embarassing in the park..
