Boundary Changes

Haha, I wondered if they were just a northern thing.
Ah yes a quick google revels the answer, nothing I've heard (or seen) of Down souff

I remember I took my mums Vacuum cleaner and swapped it for a balloon from the Rag and Bone man. My mum nearly took the skin off my backside with the slipper, she told the Rag man if she saw him again she would break his neck. He never came back down our street after that, he did the other streets though :)

Loved Steptoe and Son, even though it was a little depressing.. Two bob for the meter, gawd I remember them days :)

When I was a kid, when the leccy went off, invariably someone in the house would shout "Mum...the bob's gone!"

I remember slipping in a foreign coin now and then, thing is we did not know anyone who could afford to go on holiday, so no idea were the foreign coins came from!

We used to "liberate" few coins as kids. :lol

That tiny shiny thing that looks like the 5p actually I think a tanner was bigger than a 5p
It is now, it wasn't before it shrunk (in size and certainly in value )

Got a dimple Haig bottle 1/2 full of tanners - some of them even older than Chris! (Actually, some of them are older than any members here unless we have any centurians here!)

Impossible :D
Forgot all about the original big five pence, I can't even remember it going :)
I know they sneaked that one out of circulation, and yet the 1/2p was removed as it was too small ;)
IIRC they would both be about the same size now.

Purely because I'm bored so need to be distracted from the curries for tomorrow's supper/tea/dinner, I have just weighed an example of both (yes, I know I should have weighed 10+ and divided the result but CBA!). The new 5p (bob) weighs in at 3g (on my kitchen scales which only go down to g rather than 0.1g) while a 1965 tanner is only 2g. The tanner is marginally wider than the 5p but must be thinner as well. The balance scales I also have show the 5p to be slightly heavier too but I only go down to 5g weight for that.

If you are bored don't bother counting the old pennies it is boring, I loved seeing how many old pennies I could put on my elbow outstretched, and see how many I could catch in my hand. Entertaining when you grab the lot, and very entertaining seeing them go flying across the room
