Yes
It seems Runcorn / Widnes / Halton are to become part of Merseyside, friends and family are not too happy about loosing their Cheshire status. I was born and lived in Lancashire, but it became part of Merseyside in the 70s. Can't recall making too much fuss about it, although I do tend to forget I was born in Lancashire :) .

I'm from Yorkshire so can't stand Cheshire but even I feel sorry for them in this instance:clap:

My wife is from St Helens but don't tell my father in law it's Merseyside!

Me and the missus were just discussing St Helens being under Merseyside this morning..

I used to live in Leigh and it seems to come under Greater Manchester, but it has a Wigan Post code, and I used to pay my bills to Wigan Council

Patricia Routledge was born in Birkenhead Cheshire and studies English at Liverpool uni. Keeping up appearances Onslow played by Geoffrey Hughes was born in Wallasey Cheshire, you would not have thought so by his accent

For some people it's being proud of their heritage and proud to be part of Cheshire.
I'm guessing for many, it's about losing that line "Cheshire" in the address because it's often synonymous with affluence ;)

I have a lot of friends and relatives that live in Cheshire, on a serious issue they are worried about insurance premiums etc. On a not so serious note, or maybe a very serious one to some. I have some friends who are Man United supporters, ( I know but that is another story ) and they live in Runcorn. They will not be too happy about living in Merseyside :) , but it will be fun winding them up

Indeed

I can see a few people maybe getting upset if it affected the worth of their house in a negative way

If it goes ahead it could affect other issues, such as bin collections and other services ..

Hang on....Aren't the boundaries as follows:

Anything above Newport Pagnell: THE NORTH
Anything above Stockport: THE REALLY REALLY NORTH
Anything above Carlisle: OMG, THE EDGE!!!

:sneaky: :exit:

I went for a job way up in Scotland in the 1980s, it was so remote I left the job soon after. With missed train connections, it took me two days to get back home to the North West :(

Surely it's Anything below the M4 : Civilization, anything above the M4 : The North... :P

I used to live in a part of Warrington that was covered by Cheshire Police, it was so close to the Merseyside Police boundary you would sometimes get your call answered by them. If they were really stretched a call could be answered by Greater Manchester Police, as they were only down the road also. It seems they covered each other area, if it was close enough and they were short on patrols in that area...

They can rename things but it takes a while for it to catch on, we still have a Westmorland County Show and and the Westmorland Gazette.

The post office though have an entirely different view of the world. Because our nearest sorting office is in Lancashire our official postal address is Lancashire not Cumbria which amuses me especially because the same applies to a bit of North Yorkshire. They got their own back though because there is a bit of Cumbria in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

This is the mess that results from changing some adminstrative boundaries without changing all the others

The Mersey actually starts in Stockport.....now that really would cause ructions........

Aye, a lot of this will be to do with the new upcoming `Merseyside Mayor` cr@p.

Bolton, Oldham.......... used to be Lancashire.
Boundary changes can affect a whole raft of services + as you say, insurance premiums, house prices etc, but I think, as Marcel said, it's about losing heritage & pride.

Most folk have a bit of a moan & as time passes & the next generation come through, things get forgotten, BUT, Yorkshire folk don't let things like this go. They are still on the war path from the 1970's boundary changes, with some success too!

I'm a Lancs lad living in bandit country. :cautious:

I'd be concerned about being in Merseyside too!

On a slightly serious not, wont it affect who your MP/councillor is too?

F*** off

Though strictly speaking its where the river Mersey starts so technically is true as it is on the side of the Mersey ;)

Runcorn, isn't that the place wedged in between the m56 and the road to Speke under the smoke of the chemical factories. s*** and they are worried about the county name?

I thought there are bigger issues at hand ;)

Thats the one, used to be called the Ford Road as that is were the Ford Factory was, Jaguar now, is now called the Halewood road. Separated by Runcorn bridge..

Interesting learning about all the nasties in the ground around the new Runcorn Mersey Bridge. Impossible to totally remediate apparently, even after getting 17 tons of chemical contaminants out. So you cant blame Cheshire for wanting rid of the ex ICI site. If you cant clean it, give it to your neighbour.

Forgot about the old ICI site, lot of works going on for the new crossing. Can be a pain travelling at times with the closures, but it should be good when it is all done..

Quite right too Carl! :p

Looks very pretty on the developers computer simulation......a quick escape to Cheshire when complete ;)

`Cheshire` always sounds great
I bet those in Ellesmere Port love it.

Me and the missus are supposed to be moving to Runcorn / Cheshire when we find a suitable place. If it does change to Merseyside and we do move, we will say to some people we have not moved to Cheshire after all, only to people we are not keen on

We went through a part of Cheshire a little while back, we thought it looked more like a part of..Well deffo not a part of Cheshire, more like a long forgotten about place, for the worse that is..
And it just goes to show, good and bad places in every part of the UK :)

Hmm. I think my maternal grandparents, or my grandfather anyway, came from Cheshire but I know very little about my family history for various reasons, and I'm not sure about this. I never knew that Cheshire has any sort of 'status' attached to it, and actually had to look it up to find out where it is!

Defo seen as `posh` is Cheshire. One of the richest areas of the UK. (mind you, it will be with all the footballers & WAGS living there :D )

Some of the Liverpool squad including Steven Gerrard and one of the managers had luxury flats not far from us, the flats were going for silly money..

You can have an English postcode and address whilst living on the Welsh Coast too. Used to annoy the hell out of me on anything auto completed I'd always amend it with the proper address info.

Car insurance will rocket and folk will wake up to find a sofa on fire in there street on the following Monday :-)

Yes, I always use Cumbria if I have to type it it but I have to say I can never be bothered to change the automatic look-up stuff.
