Yes
Couldn't find an up to date thread like this- please dont slag me off for it its just for fun and a bit of research!

If you have changed makes please post the reasons!!!

Changing to Nikon tomorrow. 5D to D700 after about 4 years of using solely Canon gear.

The reason? Canon have yet to release a full frame camera with all of the features that the Nikon D700 has. The more press stuff I shoot, the less chance I have to use primes so the fact that Nikon has a poor selection of wide primes is irrelevant to me.

My intentions were to buy Canon, upon holding the 350d then the d70s, i went Nikon and don't see me changing.

Rob.

Canon. Always have been, compacts and all.

But Nikon has always been tempting, whenever I secretly handle one it feels good. Hmmm..

Almost switched to pro canon a year ago, glad I didn't bought a D3 january and have bought 2 more since, they are amazing bits of kit, low light, what low light, you could shoot on the dark side of the moon with these things I'm sure

My first camera was a Zenit EM followed by a Canon AE-1 and I've never looked back.

Main features I wanted:

- Faster and better AF
- Weather sealing
- Better metering
- Faster FPS

other things like customisable functions, nice screen, lots of handy features, better high iso performance..

I can't get my hand round a D3 grip and allied to horrible ergonomics I have some nice Canon primes and zooms that it would cost me a lot more to get the Nikon equivalents.

Add to that all the flash gear.

Oh and the fact that most people can't tell what the damn pic was shot on means I'll be staying put :)

nikon to canon for me.

the reason? managed to get hold of cheap 5d and loved its full frame goodness, that said. i'd happily switch back to a d700 or d3 without a thought. i don't care what i shoot with, long as it does the job.

Exactly the same. The 5D just wasn't fast enough for protests / sports and there was no other full frame alternative to go to which offered the speed.

I started with a Nikon SLR but my first DSLR was a Canon.

Recent releases from both firms make me wish I didn't have a bag full of lenses and was free to choose Nikon, or maybe Sony. Hopefully Canon will produce another camera I want to buy one day.

Canon and always have been,Nikon does not offer me anything better for what I do.:D

I started with various Praktica SLRs and then some time ago moved to Canon. The decision to go Canon was not the result of long deliberation about Canon v Nikon, it was based solely on my friends having A and F series Canons at the time. The Canon momentum carried on from there, spanning the move to the EF mount and subsequently to digital. I have not felt the need to change to yet another brand.
I understand and accept conscidered and well presented reasoning for a preference to either manufacturers offerings.

Being a reletive n00b to photography I've only really had time to have one brand and I still haven't mastered what my 40d can do so no point in trying anything else yet. That said I doubt I'll change because of the lens investment and the fact Nikon and Canon seem to play a game of leapfrog.

Started off with a Practika MF, moved to EOS and had an ETRSi and a Cambo 5x4", then EOS Digital with work, then bought into Nikon digital.

First DSLR was a Nikon D40 last year, then went to a D90 then decided to go FF but as all my lens where DX it meant I had to start from scratch. Looked at the 5D II but for me the D700 the better of the 2.

Would I be adverse to changing to Canon? Not really, I'd go for what offers me the best regardless of whether it's Nikon, Canon, Olympus or even Sony.

Kodak vest pocket rainbow hawkeye - 127 roll film
Yashica rangefinder - 35mm
Olympus pen - half frame
Olympus OM1N
Yashica 124G - MF twin lens reflex
Bronica ECTL - MF SLR
Hasselblad 500CM - MF SLR
Canon A1 - 35mm
Olympus C2000 - first digital camera
Sony F707 - digital
Canon 20D
Canon 1D mark IIN
Canon 1D mark III

I can't really count the Kodak, I was given it by my uncle when I was about ten. The first camera I really chose myself was the Yashica rangefinder around 1964 or so. Needless to say I picked "other" in the poll. It's been fun and I'm still learning.

Practika, Minolta x500, Canon 20D, Canon 40D :)

I did like that Minolta :D

:plusone:

Seems a very long time ago now though.

I started with a Cosina 35mm compact with built in motor,
then Practica LTL3 3 lens kit was first SLR.( sold that to pay for an engine rebuild on my car )
First Nikon was a F301, swapped it for a F2 Photomic
then a FA
and first Autofocus was F90
gave up and sold it all for a few years.
Coolpix 3500 was first Digital compact.
Started to get back into togging again so i got a Sony R1 couldnt get on with itso i then when back to Nikon with a D80.
Now have D700 and D300 for best of both sensors.

I went Canon when I bought my first camera, 20D- since then investment in glass means its not an option to swap really. Used a Nikon the other weekend, couldn't get my head around it- though I didn't try that hard.

I had a couple of Chinon film cameras then bought a Canon A1 and had Canons ever since and can't see me ever changing to Nokin. I am more than pleased with my lot.

My mate bought a Nikon D80 and asked me what I thought. I borrowed it for a week and truly hated it. He has since bought a D300 and D3. God only knows why as he's the typical "all the gear but no idea" kinda guy.
Now if anything was to draw me away from my beloved Canons it would be these 2 beauties. We often go out on a Saturday afternoon and swap cameras for a while. I love the feel of the D300 but the D3 although, a great camera, gets rather sore on the arms after a while. I enjoy using them but its always nice to get my sweaty mits back on familiar territiory.

Digi I've always been Canon.

I'll probably be buying a 'pro' body next year; I have looked at the D3s, and must say it looks impressive.

But, like Ali, the Nikon's shocking ergonomics (for me anyway) coupled with the fact that no client could give a proverbial, means I'll be staying with Canon for the foreseeable future.

Practika > Canon >Yashica >Bronica >Olympus >Canon >Canon >Canon >Yashica >Canon

Interesting to hear people talk about Nikon's 'shocking' ergonomics - I find it the complete opposite - the EOS1D bodies I've handled have been (to me) truly horrible to try and use after using Nikon D1x - D2x - D3 & D3x...

Are those 'horrible' ergonimics because you use the smaller, cheaper cameras? Or are we talking straight across the board - Pro-to-Pro Body, Prosumer-to-Prosumer at equivalent price-points...?

I used a Canon A-1 many years back for about six months, apart from that it was Pentax - Olympus - Nikon (F2-AS) and thereafter, Nikon for ever...

Olympus Trip 35 (borrowed)
Olympus AF1 (birthday present)
Canon EOS10 + EFm as back up
ContaxT2
Fuji645
Nikon FM2
Hasselblad
Nikon F4s
Nikon D300s

Some sort of 110 instamatic thing
Pentax S1, Spotty
Wilderness years of assorted compacts including Kodak instamatic, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Minolta and others
Nikon SLRs and DSLRs (Nikon because the first [an F65] fitted me better than any of the other brands - ie the ergonomics were better)
Minolta, Nikon, Olympus and Canon digi compacts/bridges.

It's a good job both companies are still going strong then. :)

My main comparison is 5D (and 5D mk ii) versus D700. But also used pro bodies, and countless consumer bodies from both camps.

Nikons are nice to hold, but I can't reach any buttons whilst I've got hold of one, which isn't much good. :D

Ditto. I had to shoot with a Canon D30 at the Commonwealth and it was a horrible experience compared my camera at the time my Nikon F80. When it came time to switch to digital, my experience with the D30 plus being able to handle my father-in-law's D70s made sticking with Nikon a no brainer.

I've since picked up friend's Canons and find the handling shocking on them all. Worst has to be the 5D. My brother's girlfriend has one and I just can't get on with it - it's like driving a tractor when you're used to a sports car.

Well I'm amazed at the complete tie! Especially seeing how many Canon>Nikon threads there are on here!

Can people agree on what the pro's and cons are of each make are or is that asking for an arguement :suspect: ??

Perhaps that's because Canon>Nikon types are a baselessly smug characters who are prone to gloating, whereas Nikon>Canon people are too busy getting out there using their real cameras to be sitting here banging on about it!:lol::lol:
