Hi Bob welcome aboard. Love the subject I know from experience how hard it is to shoot into a tank

Interesting choice, it's good to see everybodies interpretation of the theme.

I thought you tried that in Manchester.;)

buy a TTL off-camera-cord from FITP, and try the flash over the tank at an angle

just starting this myself !

also told to turn off all the room lights to kill any reflections

I want to illuminate the dorsal surface so will be trying with a overhead flash

Good interpretation of the theme Bob.

The placement of a suncoral is always going to make the shot more difficult. I'm not sure what the OOF bit at the bottom right is but can it be moved or approached form a slightly different angle?

I struggle like mad to get decent shots of my tanks. I have managed a few but most are rubbish

If you shoot RAW then you can adjust the white balance on the 'puter to compensate for the tank lighting. Try mounting on a tripod and manual focussing on coral. Not much good for fish as they move about too much

i know how rude are the fish
i did try on manual and it was on a tripod bit at the front is the corner of a piece of plate that the coral is on

Hi Bob / Rachel

I love your choice of subject  and you definitely haven't made it easy for yourself with your first shot :)
Being a fishkeeper myself I know how hard these shots can be, and I think you've done a really good job of it.
Takes a lot of practice and patience (I've still not managed an aquarium shot that I'm totally happy with) but I think you're definitely on the right track with this.

can i change my week one image ???

tried to edit it but in ps it has like loads of solid red on it and dont now ps enough to know what has happened

Was it the RAW file that you were trying to edit Bob?

If so then the red is PS telling you that something is out of range - normally highlights.

Use the recovery slider or the brightness / contrast until it disappears.

It's probably more complicated than that but it works for me.

yes it was thanks for that will have a looksee after i have fed the tribe !!!

Well, that second shot's got plenty of curved bits Bob! :)

I like the coral shot Bob, the colours look lovely, even muted, and it's on theme. The second one is full of curves indeed.

will leave the coral one then thanks

The coral is a very interesting subject if slightly dark. Have you tried playing with it in PP?

tbh am struggling with ps i need to sit and learn it all

Nice shot although I think it could do with a little more contrast and perhaps a tad brighter!

Hi Bob,

I like the coral shot but agree it needs lightening. I can't help with PS. I use PSP, but I usually lighten my shots by tweaking the "levels". Maybe you could look that up in the help files?

week 2
not very good started to panic about what to do then the cat sat on my shoulder !
Why Can't Cats Fly?

My kitty sat by the window
To watch all the birds fly past.
He turned to look at me,
Such sadness in his eyes ,
And gave a great big sigh
And in a mournful voice,
Did cry,
Said tell me please oh,
Why can't I,
Be like the birdies and fly.

I watch them there,
Up in the sky,
And wonder why,
A kitty cat like I
Can't join them,
In the sky.

I wish I was a birdie,
Instead of a kitty cat,
I'd fly across,
The heavens,
Laugh at all
Other kitty cats,
That tried to
Catch my I,
As I flew by.
Cats are clever,
This I know,
They find trees
To climb,
But it would be
Much more fun,
If you didn't have
To run
I'd rather be a bird
And Fly.

Hi 'Bob' - excellent name, my nickname when I started work!

Definately need to sort the background out - do you have a sheet or something you could use? Maybe even a different location, with 'Chopped', for instance, maybe you could have place the bricks by a wall.

Location aside the WB is a little orange on my screen.

light outside was dreadful really dark and dreary hence why i did it inside ontop of the cooker using the hood lights for the lighting lol
will have another go
I see what you mean about the orange hue aswell didnt notice till you said !!!

I think thats a good interpritation Bob, showing good detail in the brick, Get yourself some White/black card to shoot against they,re bound to come in over the next 49 weeks......Mick

ohh have loads of that at work that all gets binned so will bring some home thanks for that !!

I have had a few problems with the flash this week but have realised the error of my ways now so will hopefully reshoot in the week !!!

Good idea but the location isn't quite right as has been said. Not sure cropping the bottom and side off has helped it either. Look forward to the reshoot if you get a chance.

Lovely image of the cat 'Bob'... suits the poem well. Chopped is good and fits the theme well too, the background is an issue, but that's been mentioned already. Good textures in the brick.
