blakester's 52 for 2010, Part 1

Not to keen on the color versions but the B & W works quite well, nice tones.

Allan

Thanks Allan, from the couple of comments already posted, the B&W image looks to be the preferred choice. Cheers Iain

Hi Iain, I love your peace image - very colourful and a clever take on the theme.

I also prefer the B&W close image. It does not shout "close" to me, but is definitely close to the water. It is an intriguing thing. Where in Scotland was this taken and what is it?

Jenny

Thanks Jenny, another vote for the b&w. I looked again at my second colour image and am less than pleased now:(. I have just noticed that the blown white sky merges with the page, so will heve a rethink on that one.
The object in my close image is a large rock which someone has painted to look like a pharoah(sp). It is near Kilcreggan which is a small village on the banks of the Firth of Clyde.
Thanks again for commenting Jenny

Another attempt at a colour image for 'close'

This is my last visit to this theme, the term 'polishing a turd' springs to mind:D

Iain

Week 18 Indulgence......
I thought about what to shoot for this weeks theme all week and then it dawned on me, my other hobby, my passion, my indulgence, golf....

Tee the Ball

Address the Ball

See the Shot

Line up the Putt

Worm Eye View

Make the Putt

A lot of images, but i think it needed it to tell the story.
C&C welcome as always.

Peace - completely original and spot on for the theme. I'm very impressed

Close - the last colour image is the best for me. The first one seems a bit off with the processing.

Indulgence - I'm not a golfist so can't really share your passion. However they are a nice set of images. The worms eye view is the stand out shot for me. really sharp and well composed

Thanks Andy,
Peace I was pleased with as it was created specially for theme and turned out how I hoped.
Close :gag: wasn't really there for me.
Indulgence, i wanted a sort of story board effect, not sure how else to achieve it with the six images together, thats why they're seperate.
Iain

A wee tweak of the six images above.

Like the images together, if I was to choose one on my own I think it would be the 2nd shot, its 'close' and 'indulgence' in one.

Golf is also my indulgence but I shot my golf one for play.

Nicely done

Personally I prefer the 6 shots together as it tells a story.

Thanks Dan, I like each image on their own but as said above, one image is easier to view rather than the six to tell the story. I struggled with this theme to be honest, so my expectations of getting the 'shot' were lower.

Personally I prefer the 6 shots together as it tells a story.

Cheers Darren, telling the story was my aim but six single images in one post may be too much.

I rather like these - particularly the six images together. The colours and lighting are consistent and together they tell the story (though not all of it - did you sink the putt?) The flag pole seems to float above the green but probably not much you can do about it.

Nice one.

Cheers Tracer , telling a story was what I was after.
I didn't take the putt  the golfists among us will have noticed that I am on the green with the flag in and not attended :nono: I chose to use a little creative licence on my breaking the rules.
Not a lot I could do about the flag floating, the black section at the bottom is hidden by the background. Thanks again Tracer.

"see the shot" and "worms eye view" hold my eye longer, although they do work pretty well together. "see the shot has almost got the feel of a tilt shift shot. They are all nicely exposed and sharp.

Thanks for commenting Chris, much appreciated:thumbs:

Hmmmmm......me thinks you like a little golf now and again ;)

Great idea to tell a story from start to finish although i think you needed a shot from above as the ball is in the hole for the last shot.

Thanks Scott, good point about an image with the ball in the hole. I need to have a think about that one because it would make it 7 images in the set, a bit of an awkward number to deal with.

great images i really like the first two but i have to ask ..whats the yellow cube ???

Thanks Bob:thumbs:
The yellow cube is a wooden marker to denote where the male golfers tee off. The red markers are for ladies, usually slightly forward of the men's tee.

Easy....add 2 more and make it 9. ;)

Thanks !!!

Close, they are all pretty close to the edge and the camera... I think the mono works best... not sure on the colours. I do like the idea though.

Indulgence, the 6 shots in sequence in a single image works well.. I like the format.

Thanks for the comments John.
I've moved on from these and am trying to come up with something for this weeks theme.

I'm going with the majority on this and voting for the B&W close shot.
I can see why you wanted to keep those colours in there, but for me the B&W just works better

Indulgence : I'm so glad that you combined those into one image
That was my first thought as I scrolled through them.
It works really well to tell the story - and I like the way that the focal point moves from the ball to the background & flag to lead you through the scenario.
The only downside is that the light isn't completely consistent through the set. Not a lot you could do about that though, so I don't really know why I mentioned it

I think the six images work really well in the combined shot. I like the way different shots use dof differently to get a variety of effects - makes it much more eye catching than it otherwise might have been.

I've got a bit of catching up to do, Iain! :)

Close: I love the perspective on the b&w image - it look alsmot 3D! And I agree with your self crit about the blown sky. The various colour versions all hit different marks in terms of naturalness, vibrance, etc, but the sky remains difficult! (Don't they always :D) The last one (the polished turd?) is the best, but I would still want a bit of colour in the sky. Aren't I a pain in the ****! ;)

Indulgence: This is an excellent story sequence, Iain. I like the composite version best, and could see it in your gold club's brochure - despite the slight bending of the flag rules! Did you use a tripod on the green? :D

Thanks Sarah, I know why the B&W works better than the colour ones for the varying reasons but I can't get away from my taste for colour in images
indulgence, I thought when I posted them that 6 images is a bit unwieldy and that combining them would be easier to view. My only concern was my posting another collection of golf shots as I did for quad.
I see what you mean about the inconsistent light but as you say not a lot could be done about that;)

Thanks for commenting Phil. I am glad varying the dof worked:thumbs:

the sky was a problem Jean but as I was only in bonny Scotland for a couple of days, I took this opportunity when I could. I need to brush up on those turd polishing skills

I am pleased how the sequence turned out. No my tripod was just off the green on the first cut. No greens were harmed in the making of these images:lol:
Thanks for looking/commenting, much appreciated.

Hi Iain,

I really like your combined golf shots. I like the way they tell a story and it's a good take on the theme. I also like the vantage point being so low.

Jenny

Jenny thanks for your comments.
As for the take on the theme  I wasn't sure if it needed a wee bit of crowbar

Week 19 - Ingredients.
I thought I would go for something simple, a refreshing drink with natural ingredients. I am hoping this will bring on the summer:cool:
As always C&C welcome.

Iain,

works well..... good take on the theme...... maybe an ice cube or 2 and a straw, and a "Gordon's bottle" by the side..... I'm sitting here thinking has he got fizzy water, lemonade or a G&T?

I did contemplate something similar, but done the ice and slice for my NCFE course and wasn't overly happy with the results....... guess I could have done that again for "RESHOOT"....

Fizzy water for me Lynton, I am a rare breed of Scot, I am teetotal, never been a drinker. :D

Thanks for your comments.

I'm with Allan on the blue bottle. I want to see more of that lovely sharp bubbling (in my mind) G&T. The yellow and green of the fruit work really well, but I find that blue bottle a bit distracting.

Ian.

Nice idea, I think the shot might have been stronger if the blue bottle was left out as I find it slightly distracting. The glass and contents are strong enough in their own right.
Perhaps a red striped straw would be a a compliment to the photo.

Allan

Allan and Ian thanks for your comments and suggestions.
I can see how an image without the bottle would work, the addition of a red straw would be a good prop too. I like that idea, I can see it perhaps going through the frame on a diaganol. Cheers Iain

I agree. The blue bottle isn't necessary. Other than that it's a well composed and detailed shot. Good work!

On account of recycling my props for the ingredients image (and cannot be bothered shopping for more:D), I have cropped an existing image to take on board the comments so far. Here is my edited version for further C&C.
