weekly blakesters 2014 52 - Retired Gracefully

Nice shot and good interpretation of the theme close up and close. Only tiny thing I could criticise would be to have the top wire going into the top right corner.

Thanks Richard (y)
I tried that crop but felt the padlock was just too close to the top of the frame.

Great capture, especially if this was one you came across on the bridge. The colours really make it stand out.

Thanks Richard (y)
Yes there were a few on the bridge, this one stood out.

That's exactly what I though. Nice, dreamlike photograph.

Cheers.

Cheers Andy (y)
Dreamlike, I like that thanks.

Super shot with a vividly coloured subject against subtle background tones. Very nice.

Thanks peter (y)

Hey Iain :)

Close - Really like that, I like the way the cable fades in and out of focus, the Padlock and heart pop from the background - Nice one mate (y)

Hey Dean, thanks matey(y)

I remember going to that bridge with you and there wasn't one padlock

I love this. Saw it on FB and I remembered your shot from a previous year. Great DOF, I like how the cables blur nicely at both ends, enough to lead the eye but not too much so as to distract!

Hi Iain, I remember seeing some of your images from last year as I struggled to get properly involved with my 52, and you had some highly original ideas so I'm looking forward to following your thread and being more involved this year.

Line - two strong images to kick off with, and the shell image clearly took a lot of time and thought. The variety of colours and sizes make it very enjoyable to look at and study.
Play - great to see your forks making an early debut. Excellent figures, perfectly posed and lit, and a really fun image.
Close - a good take on the theme and great use of narrow DOF to isolate the subject, with a strong leading line too.

Yes Marsha, I remember. It's all about good luck and timing on the bridge because the padlocks get removed.
Thanks for your comments (y)

Nice DOF Iain. Good take on the theme...

Thanks Colin (y)

I try to think a little differently in my interpretation of the themes, sometimes it works, sometimes not. Then it is post and be damned ;)

The photography skills used are good, and your crafting skills with the fork sculptures are excellent too. Great job.

I find the bottom line a little distracting, great detail on the lock and heart, lovely lead line and great depth of field.

Lovely colours enhanced by the DOF. Well seen and taken

Thanks Kev(y)

Re the bottom line being distracting, I see your point and tend to agree but cropping it away leaves the bottom of the padlock too near the edge of the frame at the bottom.
Not an excuse but a compromise on the overall composition. Cheers

Well it had to happen. Check out pages 20 and 21 of marchs practical photography :)

You've got me curious now Andy, I will have to go look for a copy to see what it says :D

Well following on from @posiview Andy's post above, I had to go and see what he was talking about :D
The latest copy of Practical Photography features one of my photographs in one of their articles, to say I am chuffed is an understatement.
Below is a photo of said article.

Hi Iain,

Play - I'm really impressed with your level of creativity! Such a cool idea. It looks a little bit bright in places but that's just a minor niggle.
Close - I like the composition and the colours here.

Really nice crisp and fresh image. lovely colour in the lock and no distractions in the background. Very nice.

Hi Iain...

Close: Another great shot.....and another lesson in how to approach a 52 challange - Take unadulterated quality pictures and process tastefully - Job done.

Love Locks are a fav subject of mine too and I have a few nice ones from the bridges over the river Seine in Paris.

PS: Congratulations on your published Pic :)

Play, it's always a bit of a technical nightmare shooting shiny objects.

I do like these love locks but it's all about being lucky with timing for the ones in London because they are removed. Having said that, it does help with composition as it is straightforward to isolate particular locks.

Hell's teeth...this is getting weird!!

Perusing Flipboard and I saw this linky

:)

 Cheers Andy, that's an old one, they contacted me quite a while ago for permission.

congrats on one of your images being used, id be chuffed as well.

Thanks Mandy :)

Forkin' 'ell. Great start. Love the simplicity of the lock, adore the forks and I am in awe of anyone with the patience and attention to detail to nail a shot like the spiral shells. Cracking stuff.

Thanks Tony (y)
I do get absorbed in the creating shots such as the shell one.

Great image for close Iain (y)

And well done on having the photo used in their article (y)

I remember making pebble feet with mi daughter at Durdle Door, great fun :D

Yes it is great fun, we'll I think so anyway;)

Iain, add an aside, any idea what the the guys on page 53 are photographing with? Looks like they are using some kind of tablet device and telescopes

Not quite sure Andy, I would guess at some sort of tethered screen for viewing. The angle of the fella in the middles lens doesn't look quite right for the screen to be on a camera.

Week 4 - Bubble, this just about sums up what I've been doing over this week, thinking about 'bubble' :D

Post and be damned as they say!

C&C welcome as always.

Hi, Iain, not a lot to crit :)

Well composed with good clean BG.

Onwards and upwards.

Cheers.

Cheers Andy, I had a few ideas, some didn't work out so went with this. It is as shot, I sacrificed my black card in the absence of a blackboard :D

Really like it and was also thinking of something similar :)

Thanks Sarah, I think I would have preferred it with a real person but the lack of willing models I had to go with a dummy head :D

ah-ha, I was wondering how you could get a chalk effect writing in PP.

Works well. Good placement and lighting on the face and card.
