Birds in flight....best settings on D7000?

looking to have a go at birds in flight with my D7000 and sigma 150-600mm C lens.
Just looking for some hints and tips regarding the best settings to use, that can then be saved in the U1 or U2 section.

presumably with big birds - small ones are impossible
AF-C
9 points ........ or the nearest the D7000 gives you
start at 1/1000th sec
pan
+EV 1,0 +........ or whatever depending on the bg ......... you are likely to under expose if anything

Would suggest using spot metering also.

Start with something simple,gulls normally play ball and set about 300mm until you start getting a feel for it.

I was surprised how good 3D tracking worked for me. Although this was on Gannets.

Haven't tried the 3d tracking yet. I used afc with 9 point for those. Will try 3d the next time
