Better to be fat than lazy......

Most lazy people are fat and most fat people are lazy, is that a coincidence?

Also most fat people are obnoxious, why is that?

Well that's told them hasn't it.... Do you think some of them will choose to be offended?

Are you fat as well as obnoxious? I'm overweight but not lazy. I'm also mildly offended.

Well I hope they didn't spend too much time and money to come to this conclusion

"And obese people who exercise are in better health than those that do not." What a no s*** Sherlock statement that is

As a extremely fat person (plenty on here have met me and can attest to just how fat I really am)....I do hate other thinner people who claim to be too fat to exercise or work etc...those that have me on my personal Facebook will know what I'm going though now in an effort to improve my weight and general health and fitness

It's a funny one

I'm naturally quite slim - doesn't matter how much I drink or eat I just stay the same.

A lot of people I know exercise not to get fit but because they are overweight.

I do little over and above my normal exercise which isn't a lot. As a result I could be a lot fitter.

I can testify that this is true - matt really defines the term fat  - however he also defines the term determined and spirited in his campaign to reduce his circumference and I can testify that he's not lazy and no more obnoxious than say me.

that aside the silly thing about people saying this research justfies them not losing weight is that the research actually divided the 30k participants into categories - at the bottom were those who took no exercise at all (and were unsuprisingly mostly fat too) , the next category were still fat but did 20 mins exercise a day and were likely to live longer - so far so good , but what the headline overlooks is that there were a number of categoroies with even better life expantacy who took more exercise and were thinner.

So yes it is better to be fat than lazy - but its best not to be either

.

I was like that until i turned 30 - then I suddenly went up from a 34 inch to a 38 inch waist in about 18 months

I'll be 44 this year so I'm not complaining on the weight front.

6 foot (perhaps 5' 11) and always around 12 stone.

Am I fit - no way near what I used to be.

I reckon if I'd put on weight - I'd have been driven to exercise and would be fitter for it.

If you eat more calories than you burn off, you will put weight on.

If you slob in front of the telly stuffing pizza, you will be fat.

If you walk or cycle or do anything else that burns calories, you won`t be a fat .

Why is that so difficult for some people to understand?

I`m sure a myriad of excuses will come, but in reality, there are none.

I was just over 9st( 5-10) for years,then at about forty i went to 10st plus,the highest i about 12st 6lbs which i still at :)

It's down to people's metabolism though surely Ade ?

I drink more than the recomended amount - eat what I want - do little exercise over and above my normal lifestyle but somehow stay trim.

I have friends that are constantly on a diet and don't drink because the minute they stop - the weight goes on.

I'd say we do equal exercise too.

Whilst what you say is true - calories are a constant but what folk 'burn off' isn't

Actually that is a little too simplistic there are valid medical reason why some people will be overweight from some medication, physical admonalities to hormonal imbalance...though I'm not going to be so crass as to claim that in my own case....the majority of my weight comes from gluttony and under activity...

Under activity - You could walk up to Fillongley Hall gatehouse (the Lodge) and get that image of my grandparents house that we spoke of a few years back ;)

Sod walking it's about 12-15 miles from me, however after getting on for 2 years of being off the road I am slowly getting back behind the wheel, and as soon as I can that will be done ;) I never forget a promise

No probs - I'm only joking.

Just looking at the old place on streetview takes me back to my childhood

I'll hold you to your promise in your own time though. ;)

When I left school I weighed 9.5 stone (5' 8") 35 yrs later I weigh a couple of pounds under 15st. Waist line is onup to 32" now from 30" though and I would like to get down to 31". But i would say I'm fitter now than I was then.

I have always eaten healthy foods, I drink one night a week and go to the gym 3 times a week where I do a 40 minute spin class, 30 minutes on a cross trainer then run a mile in about 7-8 minutes and finish off with half an hour on resistance training. I'm 51 years old and according to my bmi index am overweight. Yes I need to lose about a stone and a half or so but amongst my circle of friends/ collegues there is only one who is fitter than me and he cycles 12 miles to work every day.

Somebody will be along shortly to point out that power athletes tend to come up as obese on the BMI scale and then everybody will be happy ;)

I'm staggered how many people aren't getting the point of this research.

We know that being overweight is bad for you*. We also know that exercise is good for you - to the extent that lack of exercise is bad for you. If you asked most people to rate risk groups they would look like this (from most risky to least)

1. Fat people who don't exercise
2. Fat people who do exercise
3. Thin people who don't exercise
4. Thin people who do exercise

This research shows that this commonly held belief if wrong. The risk list actually looks like this

1. Fat people who don't exercise

2. Thin people who don't exercise

3. Fat people who do exercise

4. Thin people who do exercise

Nobody is saying that being fat and doing nothing is good for you - they are saying that just being thin isn't of itself healthy. The research agrees with the existing guidelines that fat people should lose weight and everybody should exercise. Because being fat and sitting around all day has a good chance of killing you. But being thin and sitting around all day isn't a great idea either.
------
Some shorthand
"bad for you" = a significant number of people who follow this course of action will die because of it
"fat" = having a bodyweight over generally accepted guidelines
"thin" = having a bodyweight at or below generally accepted guidelines
Oh, and assume every single statement here has "in general" attached to it. There will be outliers, just like some people smoke 90 fags a day and have excellent health. We're talking about loading the dice not absolutes.

Exercise is for fitness, diet is for weight control.

Whilst exercise can help assist weight loss, without changes to your diet exercise alone will have very little impact.

This is why it's important to watch what you eat AND exercise.

The number of people I see putting on facebook that they're trying to lose weight, do an exercise class/go to the gym and get a McDonalds on the way home..... :banghead:

It's highly unlikely the exercise they've done would have burnt anywhere near as many calories as they've consumed although hopefully their fitness would have improved

Well, Strava says I just burned 772 calories so I came in and ate a Mars bar. I'm still 500 calories in hand :)

I'm about 15 stone but most of it is muscle (at 6,4 this doesnt make me that bulky) - when i was 25 I was 14 stone and virtually all of it was muscle , so i'd guess that my gut (my only fat part) accounts fot about a stone or so

Its a shamre as i iused to hve abs like an aligator - these days I have abs like a hippo

I wouldn't even eat that rubbish.

Unflavoured protien in a smoothy made with fruit, porridge oats, spinach and almonds. Much better.

Apart from the fact that Mars bars are actually yummy, they are a high glycemic index food. These are usually a really bad idea but right after exercise it spikes your insulin response and allows you to replenish glycogen faster. Your recovery food is all low glycemic carbs which are fine for pre loading, but simple sugars will recover you faster ;) Also, yummy.

After all, I may be running a marathon tomorrow ;)
