I was in a newsagent's earlier and they had 9 or 10 different magazines and did not have a clue what to get. Can any of you guys recommend a good mag to subscribe to for a beginner/novice photographer?

you already have.....

..... Talk Photography!

Your best bet is to pick a magazine that contains the kinds of images you want to create - which isn't necessarily a Photography magazine.

When you see images in them you like, try to figure out how they "got the shot", and if in doubt, make a post on here. :)

Then when they run out of topics, it's "how to bend the law to shoot Urbex!" or "Start a fight with the cops by showing them you know more about the law than they do!" ;)

Thanks guys. I know there are countless resources online but i like to have a physical book/magazine in my hand! Are there anyone's specifically for nikon users?

Not that I know - best bet would be to subscribe to one for a year - as they really do loop the topics!

Then if you need some help in the meantime - pop on here, we are a friendly bunch!

If you're looking for books as well, and you want some Nikon specific info, pick up "The Hot Shoe Diaries" by Joe McNally. :)

It all really depends what style of photography you want to shoot though. Landscapes, wildlife, people, etc?

I'm only starting out but lanscape and wildlife photography is something i would like to concentrate on when i get to grips with my camera. This place is fantastic, i have spent hours reading through tuorials and critique threads and getting tried and tested advice is priceless.

It depends what kind of photography you are in to. If you are in to glamour then buy Playboy, if you are in to weddings then buy wedding magazines, if you are in to sports then buy sports magazine.

If you want to learn how to get better at photography then you are already on the site that is going to tell you everything you need to know. If you just want to look at the photos you want to try and shoot then buy a magazine specific to that.

I subscribe to this one

http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/photography/photoplus-magazine-subscription/

It has some good tutorials & reviews etc - mainly for canon users though!

I used to subscribe to that, found it more like the 'take a break' of the photography world lately though.

As others have said, i think once all the topics have been covered it's loop time, i even remember looking through photoplus and digital camera mags recently and there were at least 10 pages that were exactly the same, i'd have been a bit disappointed if i'd picked up both.

Best thing to do is look on the websites of some of the magazines that you saw in the shop. Most of them do an offer if you sign up for delivery such as 5 issues for £5 etc... then all you need to do is cancel your subscription before the renewal date.

Not the thing to do if you are likely to forget to cancel it though!

Just remember to cancel if you only want the 5 issues. I think I sent them an email as well as cancelling the direct debit. I did it after I got my second issue and got the others no trouble and no more charges.

Its only for Canon users ........... ive just unsubscribed from this one as like all other magazines, it just loops topics. No doubt soon you will see a "Take great pictures in autumn" feature. Same as last year lol

I agree. Only had it for about a year and have been noticing some repetitions!

It's good for starters though with simple answers and quite interesting reading for someone starting out.

I buy Digital Camera now and then also. Gives some good advice on all makes & models:)

I used to buy loads of magazines and then after a while I have stopped. I can't be bothered to go out and purchase a magazine that has info on something that interests me but then they tell me what I have already learnt on here and around the interweb.

i have sometimes considered purchasing Photoshop magazines because you get the tutorials but you also get the CD which is normally full of tutorials, brushes and plug ins, however even then you only have to do a quick 'Google' search and you have a plethora of tutorials and free plug ins and the same can be said with photography.

save your money and put it towards equipment. one thing I do is I sometimes on the rare occasion purchase amateur photographer just on a whim.

I think DIGITAL PHOTO is the best for video tutorials but like all others it has a habit of repeating itself every few months.
I buy a few mags to read at work. Whats a good one one month isn't necessarily good the next.

well i had the same problem didnt know which is good and which is ended up buying three and all of them contained more or less the same content as each other my fav out of the three i got is called digital photo take a look at photoanwser. hope this helps

Have a look at Outdoor photographer it does landscapes, wildlife etc.

For a moment I thought you had said the Red Shoe Diaries....*

*not that I know what that programme is about :naughty:

I buy Amateur Photographer Regularly - although I realised I had started to buy it for the hell of it, not for a particular reason!

Just getting into digital photography seriously and buying all the magazines I see. Yesterday I bought the Canon mag - Photo Plus and although I have not decided if I go Canon or Nikon . the only two worth considering in my opinion ... the canon mag was very interesting indeed with ideas for all dslr users.

May I also suggest you go into the web and type D-Town TV ........ you will get into the site of Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski and their 50 short vidio's about everything to do with DSLR cameras and lots of ideas and information..... Great stuff. The Scott Kelby Digital Photography books 1-2 & 3 are also 'required' reading but get them in that order.

Good luck.. but dont start subscribing until you have decided which mag is the best for you

I've heard British Journal of Photography mentioned a few times. Anyone got any experience of that?

Then when they run out of topics, it's "how to bend the law to shoot Urbex!" or "Start a fight with the cops by showing them you know more about the law than they do!" ;)

Now that seems an interesting mag...how do I subscribe? :D

Seems a shame not to keep an open mind and at least try all the options available in your price range. You may find that one of the others actually handles better for you so why restrict your choice? All the magazine test reports in the World are no substitute for "hands on" at the camera shop. :)

pick the one that gives you the best subscription gift.

all the mag loop topics so what you read last year will be the same this year. you can probably gain most if not all the information from mags online. The internet has pretty much killed a lot of magazine sales. Max power used to sell 250000 a month a few years back, they are lucky to get 10k a month now

I stopped getting the monthly magazines for a few years due to the repetitive nature of 'your best ever landscapes / macro / portrait / etc' articles.

However, I've picked up Photography Monthly a few times recently, and am quite enjoying the change of direction it's taken in the past year or so, the current issue is excellent.:)
