Howdy - I see there have been a few posts on this subject already, but all from a few years back. Just about to pickup a mini-tripod for behind the goal stuff for the upcoming season ... Will be paired with a 1D MK IV and a 24-105 (although may need to re-think the 24mm on the 1.3 crop to get the views I want) ....

Suggestions on the tripods being used behind the goal?

There is also the Kirk Low Pod Camera Support which I had a look at in action a few weeks back, being Kirk it's quite expensive but it's very good and could be used for more than ground level stuff. Heavy enough to take a large lens.
 
The Gorillapod as mentioned by Gary is a bit of pain to get level BUT it offers a lot more flexibility.

If you decide on a Gorillapod then you MUST get the Focus. That is the one I have. The SLR-Zoom is not strong enough.

Standard Gorilla Pod SLR Zoom without a head is fine and can handle up to 3 kg, youre never likely to be shooting a remote set up with a 70-200mm behind the goals.
 
I agree he's not likely to use a 70-200 behind the goal. However if he gets the dearer one now he has the option to use the 70-200 in a different location.

Of course the Focus will be larger and heavier.
 
The SLR zoom is still more than capable of handling the weight of a 1DX and 70-200mm f/2.8 combo

Rated capacity is 3kg

IDX weight from canon site is 1.34kg
70-200mm weight from canon site is 1.49kg

still under rated capacity

i use mine occasionally with D4 and 70-200mm f/2.8 with no issues, camera 1.33kg and lens 1.53kg

why spend an extra £40-50 if not needed

However, some people feel more secure with "beefier" gear which is fine

I have only anecdotal evidence from a mate who had the SLR Zoom. When he had it wrapped around scaffold bars he wasn't happy with how it held the combo up.

So I bow to Gary's greater experience.

To be fair Rob, and somewhat in agreement with your mate, i havent used mine wrapped round anything and nor would i, i just use mine as a straight forward mini tripod, not so sure i'd trust £5000 worth of gear to anything which only "wraps" itself round something as such
 
The OP if he only needs behind the goal would be fine with the SLR Zoom.

This at Charlton (but it was a 1D2N so not quite £5ks worth) and is one corner. It is using a Magic Arm as I had lent my Gorillapod to a mate, but as it's scaffolding bars the Gorillapod would be fine as you would have all three legs wrapped around.

In this one which is behind the goal I would not trust a Gorillapod. I know a photographer who does use on but not for me.

I suspect that at 90% of grounds you can just pop your tripod/Gorillapod on the grass behind.

From a football point of view I only remember seeing a few behind the goals shots used in The Championships - one here from Tobers http://tobinators.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Charlton-Reading.jpg

I have a plate similar to the OX plates linked above. Bought it from the US, although the guy seems to have stopped machining them - website gone.... Similar to the F-Plate also from the US and about £50-60 I only didn't buy that due to availability.

Works for me. I have seen the gorilla pod used a lot, but with the legs spiralled round and fairly flat and some of the manfrotto 482 table top tripods.

I might pick up one of the half-risers next time I am in London from Fixation - sometimes that plate is a little low and you get too much of an upward angle. That would solve the issue.

I wasn't thinking about pitch invasion, but about the safety of the camera BEHIND the barriers where the supporters have free access. Was at one match where pitch invasion seemed likely but the stewards were there pitchside to prevent. Can't do much about kit on the other side!
 
Ah no Carol. These are the barriers just behind the goal which the photographers sit behind.

So you have the stewards behind you.
 
Dartford doesn't have the advertising hoarding that we do at Charlton. Thinks that where you're confusing it. It's barriers as such but not the ones in front of the fans
 
Yeah, I thought I'd posted a reply. I get what you are referring to now! As an aside, I've often wondered what muppet at Prem Div games decides to site their camera behind the goal without checking whether its in range. The number of cameras I've seen get sent flying by a goal means they don't learn ...
 
Nigel I think the Gorilla pod will suit you then. If only going behind the goal then it seems tha SLR-Zoom will be perfect.

Maybe this is off topic, but do you guys who have a camera set up behind the goal usually take 3 bodies to a game then (long lens, short(er) zoom and behind goal)? Or 4? One in case of any faults?? Also, if you have the capacity, do you set up a camera behind a goal every game or just pick and choose, then how do you pick?

Steven I only started experimenting with it last year. The problem I has was that I only a 1DIIN and I found that the quality in night games wasn't really good enough.

I have just bought a 70D that should be a lot better at higher ISOs - 4000-6400 so hopefully it will be good.

I intend to have it in place for most games. I will also be looking for other angles as well for it.

I probably used it in 7 games and only had one photo published which wasn't from behind the goal but higher up to the side - see top photo in post #13.

n.b. that is from Championship games though where there isn't as much coverage as the Prem League.

Clearly I need a bigger one ... just tried it with the one I have already with the Combo of a 1D MK IV and the 24-105 .... I think even a passing ant farting would knock it over .... just didn't seem to be any hold .. certainly would not try this at a game ... The one certified for DSLR+lens usage seems to be around £80 on amazon (without any ball head or similar) ... The Focus, as has been commented on before ... I guess at that price it's in the similar range (£) of things like the Velbon mini etc ...

Although I shoot non-league, I do like to take an extra body for behind the goal. Whether I used it depends (1) weather - I don't bother if its tipping down, (2) sufficient room behind the goal - a lot of non-league grounds don't have enough space. I've got to know most of the grounds I go to now. Home game is always OK. (3) just whether I feel I might capture something - you never know, but often after a run of poor matches I don't bother. Often regret it, but that's the nature of the game.
 
I don't know anyone who has spare cameras.
 
If anyone wants my Velbon CX-mini Tripod as discussed further up this thread im gonna sell mine, i havent used it in about 3 years, still have the box tucked away somewhere as well, ill list it for sale tomorrow for £25 delivered but thought i'd give you sport guys a heads up first, if anyone wants it first to PM me will get first refusal when i do list it for sale, best to put a sale thread up to keep things above board but cant see owt wrong in giving you guys a heads up

They can post in the thread and if you have your subscriptions turned on, you will get notified straight away. The guys who are interested can even set up an alert that if you post in classifieds, it will send them a notification as well I believe
