Hi all i have been keeping an eye out for a Nikon 18-70mm lens over the last month or so and was talking to a friend today who has offered me a straight swap for my Nikon 18-105mm

My question is does this sound a good deal as im not sure if i will be getting done or coming out winning. I have checked prices on ebay second hand and they seem to go for round about the same money but that can change from day to day.

Anyway what you think?

The reason, well i have the Nikon 70-300VR so was wanting to go from 18-70 then 70-300 if this makes sense.

A lot of people rate the 18-70, but you'll probably find that you wouldn't notice any difference in use, except that you'd lost 35mm and VR

Yeah lossing the VR is worrying me but not the focal lengh. just wondering which lens rates better as they seem to have the same spec. I would say that i have thought about selling my 18-105 and getting the 18-70 as there is no point in both.

I just wrote out a big message, thinking your mate was offering you his 18-105 for your 18-70.
Dude, swap, right away. The 18-70 kicks arse!

Why would you say this? And his lens is just over a year old mines is weeks old would the lens wear with age?

Hello again ... your logic is good, however it really does not matter that the two lenses you have overlap a bit in focal length.

I would keep the 18-105mm, there are days when you may only take out one lens, if you have the 18-70 there may be a time where you needed a bit more reach, which the 18-105 would give, plus it has VR.

I own an 18-70, and I can confirm it really does kick arse :woot:
But haven't used a 18-105, so I can't compare.

Here's a sample from it:

right it seems i should maybe keep the 18-105 BUUUUT i like doing the lanscape thing and thought the 18-70 would help here or am i wrong again, Also i keep hearing people saying about the plastic mount on the lenses and the 18-105 has this, though i was told from the guy in Jessops that in all his days he has never seen one worn.

I myself am not sure about this.

Yeah, I've got one of these new fangled Canikon 40DX ;)

Nah, used them both at work quite extensively, always preferred the 18-70 :)

What work, behind the counter in Jessops, requires you use cameras/lenses extensively, or even at all?

I've owned both lenses and there's not a lot in it to be honest. I don't think you'll gain much from a swap IMHO.

I would rather use the 18-105 for landscape, that extra 35mm matters.

For landscape I'd use the 18-70 not the 18-105.

Why? Well you don't need VR for that (tripod) and I find the distance scale on the lens is useful at well.

However I'm not sure a straight swap is equitable financially?

I have seen this raised on a US forum many times, not once have I read of an issue with the plastic mount.

Thats good to hear. As i said i was told by the guy in Jessops but reading on here there advice can be dodgey.lol

Sorry Jessops workers.

In what way financially?

Should i be giving out cash or him?

The work doesn't require that I use any of the cameras, but then how the hell would I advise a customer on what lens is better if I hadn't used them?

I've taken around 100 shots on each lens in as many different instances as I could - outside, in the stock room, shop floor, wide apertures, narror apertures, close ups, long shots, in the mall, on a tripod, with a shutter release, on different bodies, etc etc etc.

I personally preferred the 18-70, and from what the screen in the lab tells me, I found the 18-70 to be noticeably sharper than the 18-105.

So

I take it you only tried one copy of each lens? I certainly didn't find either to be 'noticeably sharper' than the other. :)

Bought my D200 with the 18-70mm for magazine work, thinking I'd have money later for something a bit more expensive - binned that thought when i saw the results!!

The 18-70mm is a great piece of glass and actually, on the most part, I can't tell any difference between it and the image quality coming from my works Canon L 17-40mm.

Now, if Nikon can do an amazing f/2.8 300mm for the same price I'll be a happy man :)

God im getting mixed opinions on this.

Im now worried i am either getting ripped off or i am ripping my mate off, somebody mentioned in an earlier post about the money value in this here deal.

I think there is a £40-£50 price differential here between the lenses, assuming both are used, but mint.

If I were buying or selling, I'd be looking for £90-£100 for a mint used 18-70 DX
If I were buying or selling, I'd be looking for £140-£150 for a mint used 18-105 DX

Cheers for giving me that info. My 18-105 is only weeks old and his 18-70 is over a year so not sure how i would work this out with him as he is a good friend and dont want to offend him in any way and it was him that mentioned straight swap.

I think you should politely decline.

That isn't an equitable swap, friend or no friend.

The only thing that matters is that you (meaning GG) are happy with what you get out of the trade.

Maybe so but I guarantee.. you puit an 18-70 DX here in the Classified at £100 and it'll be here for a few days. You put an 18-105 VR in here at £100 and it'll go faster than a 50mm.

Its not a fair swap. End of.
