Indeed. I dislike the whole idea of zoos, and it's appalling when an animal is shot under these circumstances. Bears aren't critically endangered, but nor are humans.
"Max" was a gorilla in Johannesburg zoo about 10 years ago. A fleeing criminal jumped into his enclosure to try to escape from the police, and shot him twice. Gorillas are normally gentle animals, but Max wasn't very impressed and mangled him quite badly before the cops and zoo staff "rescued" him. The perpetrator recovered eventually and was charged with a number of crimes, including shooting Max, and got life imprisonment.
Max was quite a hero and a lot of people felt there was no need for the cops and zoo staff to intervene, because he had the situation well under control! He died in 2008, aged 33, and there is a statue of him in the zoo now. I do approve of that.
