Bear v Man (grapic image )

Last night police and zoo officials said they had been inundated with messages of sympathy – for Finn the bear.

Im not suprised :(

So sad - they should let him get on with it then put up a bigger fence to
stop it happening again.

That's heartbreaking.
If animals are going to be kept in captivity, we should never forget that they are still animals . . . all that bear was doing was what would come naturally to any animal and better precautions should have been in place to stop that sort of thing happening :(

Thats a real shame, hopefully the bear is a strong old chap and he will pull through.

Indeed. I dislike the whole idea of zoos, and it's appalling when an animal is shot under these circumstances. Bears aren't critically endangered, but nor are humans.

"Max" was a gorilla in Johannesburg zoo about 10 years ago. A fleeing criminal jumped into his enclosure to try to escape from the police, and shot him twice. Gorillas are normally gentle animals, but Max wasn't very impressed and mangled him quite badly before the cops and zoo staff "rescued" him. The perpetrator recovered eventually and was charged with a number of crimes, including shooting Max, and got life imprisonment.

Max was quite a hero and a lot of people felt there was no need for the cops and zoo staff to intervene, because he had the situation well under control! He died in 2008, aged 33, and there is a statue of him in the zoo now. I do approve of that.

What an Idiot for going in there,It couldn't of been the easiest place to get into and if you still go in there it's your fault..No matter what problems/issues you have

I actually couldn't care less what happens to this person I just feel sorry for the bear.

How about putting a vicious animal in the cage to deter intruders?

Poor Bear. For the most part I hate zoos, other than the conservation stuff.

That's a nasty vid . But as he is mentaly handicaped he would have been there in a supervised group wouldn't he Why wasn't they watching out for him?

Somebody should have been looking after the man if he is mentally handicapped. There will be an investigation but thats not much help to the poor bear or the man. Also it shouldnt be possible for a person to get into a bears cage. I hate to see bears in cages anyway. Of all the animals in the zoo they look one of the most distressed.

I'm inclined to say poor bear, but the guy is quite obviously mentally ill and vulnerable people need protecting too.

The bigger issue is how it managed to happen, lots of failures there.

The bear didn't know any better, and nor did that man for climbing in, since he was mentally handicapped. Sad situation.

Agree with what others wrote that the mans carers should have been keeping a better eye on him. Also, the place mustn't have been too secure if he was able to get into the enclosure without difficulty.

poor bear :(

surely they should believe in natural selection?!

if he's thick enough to go in, he deserves it

The blokes not thick, he's mental !

There is a difference !

This saddens me about the bear.
And it also saddens me that the ones that will be at fault will be the Zoo.
What about the people looking after him, and why was there no attention brought around sooner that some mental dude was climbing the fence of the bear enclosure?

Poor bear :'(

I feel for the guy if he has mental issues and the people who were supposed to be caring for him should be shot.
Where the keepers with tranqilliser darts?
There is no excuse for them not to have the equipment nearby.
The bear didn't know any better and it has to pay the price, such a shame.

Sad as it is - the poor man is the priority and then the folk that look after this bear need to ensure it doesn't happen again.
