BBC drops half of F1 coverage

We don't have television, and I doubt if we will buy one because there's nothing I really want to watch, and I don't have time anyway. I have various interests, and I read a lot.

OTOH, I can understand why you need a licence to watch state television (BBC), but why do you have to get one to watch puerile advertising - interrupted by programmes - on ITV?

If everyone paid a £10p a year more on their TV license for F1, everyone has F1. People complained, people didn't pay, people lose out and Sky gets F1 with the extra price associated.

This isn't happening just with F1, it is happening all over the country with different things. I don't care about F1 or football, so should I pay for it as part of my TV license?

Well i don't watch Merlin, Strictly, Holby, Garrows Law, The Antiques Roadshow and a load of other BBC rubbish, so why should i pay for all that?

There was outrage when football became subscription only. Remember when boxing was on normal TV? Golf? Cricket?

It can not be denied that the additional money that has gone in to these sports (football particularly) has in some part hurt the game and the audience.

BUT in the same breath you can not look past the improvements that have been made to the coverage, and in part the sports, by having a broadcaster that wants to push the boundaries of how they present the product.

I don't want to pay for them either as I don't watch them.

I doubt that very much, it will mean needing Sky sports 1 and 2 and Sky HD to receive it :)

Doesn't look like it, and if the Sky press release is correct, having Sky Sports or Sky HD qualifies for the new HD F1 channel, and if you are a non HD customer but a Sky Sports customer you will receive an SD F1 channel.

From the Sky website:
http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/news/12433/7332332/Sky-Sports-launches-F1-channel
The dedicated channel will be provided at no extra charge to all Sky TV customers who take both Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 or the HD pack of channels. It will be found at 408 in Sky's on-screen guide, after a scheduled move of the Sky Sports channels. Sky Sports viewers without the Sky+ HD pack will receive a standard definition version.

If it stays like that it's good news for HD customers

My mate uses that argument about cricket, and I guess fans of other sports could argue the same for football, tennis etc...

Why is F1 so special?

Because it originated here, we have most of the factories and infrastructure that make the cars and support the teams here, because, for a very long time, a very strong loyal fan base has been built up here

Because for people like me, its part of my up bringing, I have been watching F1 all my life

Tell me.. if we can have soaps from 6.30 - 9.00 every night of the week, day in day out, free to air, why cant I have one of the single things I enjoy every other week on free to air... ?

Demand? Its what the viewers watch? They don't ask for the money F1 does?

HD gets the F1 HD channel, no sports required.

BBC gets Eddie Jordon.

Sky all the way!

As a sky HD subscriber but not a keen sport person other than F1 this is acceptable, so long as they dont put a ruddy football fool in as presenter "Jim Rosenthal" or bring back James Allen then I will be happy.

Steve Ryder is the main anchor, and rumour has it Croft is the commentator with Brundle as co.

Humphreys is staying with the BBC, who will still be sending a full commentary team to each race, which doesnt really do much in the way of saving money..the *****

Good, dropping DC as 2 ex-drivers don't really work for me.

The main cost is the fee to the greedy little man in charge.

So I have to SUBSCRIBE to Sky to get my free Eurosport :bang::bang:

They updated the packs about 2 months ago?

Ah maybe then, I just skip all the sports channel because I didnt have them. Will have to check :) Do they still show tractor pulling? use to love that back in NTL days.

No.

You dont need a subscription.

The signal is free and unencrypted and can be tuned into at will. it's just not part of the Freeview UK set of channels.

To get it you need a cable tv setup where you can get it at no cost, any type of satellite dish, or live via their web site. You don't need to subscribe to the channel to watch it.

Come on then Jim how do I get europort on my television for free, I have freeview only.

The BBC is getting a lot of flack for this, but maybe just maybe the greed of F1 is the real culprit.

As above!

No cable in my area (and there never will be)
No satellite dish or decoder box (so that would be a cost)

Now I know my web skills are poor, but I just cant find were you click on the europort site to watch it on my computer (which is in the office and NOT in the comfort of the living room) I can find the Eurosport player but that says it's a subscription service.

But a basic satellite dish setup cost less than a freeview decoder box! I'll have a look at the web site as it's been a while since I was on there...

You can get satellite installed for under £20

You can install it yourself for free. Im not talking sky im talking freesat.

The web site has changed. If you log on as a uk user, you have to pay using eurosport viewer, bit log on via some of the other countries and it's free!

I really don't know why you're arguing this point. Eurosport is free, it's not a premium channel. I have it on my tv and I certainly don't pay or it! I barely even watch it unless the OH want to watch showjumping.

It is a shame to see a lot of the races leaving my screens but unfortunately BBC F1 coverage is not a big exporter like the other shows the beeb make. SKY are buying it to test the water on a full deal.

The problem with F1 is the length of the program, not only is there 2 hours coverage on a Saturday but gawd knows how long on the Sunday. Sometimes the inane chit chat in the paddock is more exciting than the races and the only really thrilling part is the first corner of the race. I know you hardened fans will say this ain't so but if you analyse this is the case. F1 are doing some good stuff to try and attract more viewers and the new locations are pleasant to eye and make watching a procession a bit more bearable.

I to do not have SKY and I won't be purchasing but I will do what I used to do before we had a TV and that is go and do something less boring instead.

So you have no interest in F1 but still had to post in this thread ?

So the fans of something that's on are the ones with the least valuable opinion? In that case I'd want them to drop the tennis, snooker, golf, football, Eastenders and all of the kids TV shows - but I don't because I know they're for other people rather than myself.

Probably worth noting that the chances of having F1 as it is would be a lot less likely without 'the greedy little man'. without him keeping everyone going, would there still be an F1?

the BBC signed up knowing the cost, they were fully aware of it. The cost of sending countless bodies to cover a race that FOM provide the pictures and sound for is daft, they definitely didnt need that pillock EJ. The BBC blamed their budget cut as the reason and needing to save money, yet they still send a full team?

Most of the money the BBC pays (about 80% of the cost of showing F1) is for it's exclusive rights which the BBC has effectively sold off to Sky with Bernie's permission. The travelling and salary costs are tiny in comparison!

You have split my post up to suit your reply....very naughty indeed..... try reading what I wrote in my post about the most exciting part of a GP....

Processional races at new tracks which he thinks are wonderful because they have fancy facilities that he can impress all the corporate guests at, while traditional tracks struggle because of the fees charged to hold the race?

Undoubtedly he did improve things commercially for the teams in the past, but he's got so much money now that he has lost touch with reality (£12 million for a wedding?).

Wonder how much the photographer charged!
