BBC drops half of F1 coverage

Disgraceful as far as I'm concerned... They are going to lose a lot of viewers

Murdoch and Ecclestone can shove it up their collective ar**s as far as I am concerned (suitable smiley unavailable).

Here will be one ex-viewer - itv were bad enough!

We lost WRC to a sky channel and as far as I'm aware viewing figures are down, I'm sure I heard that there were plans to put it back on terrestrial tv. Agreed this is a very bad move for motorsport fans, just hope Alan Gow doesn't do the same and take the BTCC away from us.

Well I haven't missed a race since 2000 and now they expect me to watch half of them then to take out a sky subscription for the rest. Not a chance they can stick the whole circus where the sun don't shine.

Well, I'll probably get my life back. I've been a bit obsessed this year...and last! I watch the races on three TVs and a PC: normal coverage, in-car footage, driver tracker and timings...

Blimey - and I thought my son was a geek:lol:

Perhaps I ought to phone up Sky nearer the time, threaten to cancel and demand sky sports for free to stay with them. Or are we actually talking pay per view for each race the BBC won't be showing.

i cant imagine theyll do PPV.

even so to add sky sports to my el-basic non-HD pack is an extra £12-20/month :cuckoo:

Sounds like it'll be on Sky Sports rather than like Bernies aborted F1 Pay Per view scheme.

This is slightly amusing as a couple of races ago there was an interview on the BBC coverage with one of the major team bosses saying it was very important to all the teams that F1 was available on free to air...

I'll not be watching it after this year. I'm not paying sky just for F1 and watching half a season seems rather pointless to me. :shake:

I would be interested to see what the likes of Christian Horner, Martin Whitmarsh and Ross Brawn have to say, sadly I suspect if more money is involved they won't be giving a stuff about the fans.

Shame about SKY getting the F1 for 6 years.

Silverstone and Monaco I think are still on BBC

Vodafone by all ccounts are delighted with the news - interesting debate on TALK SPORT this morning.

i have not watched f1 for a few years as it was always the same bull crap since they added all the rules in since ayton senna , they were the days of racing but all of a sudden it went boring

i watched a few last year but this year i have watched most of it and when i missed it i wathched it via bbc iplayer very handy but i will not pay to watch it on sky regardless

i was even thinking of going to f1 next year and that i would never thought i would do but if it does go to sky then i wont even bother

As I said in the F1 thread "Oh balls":(

You could spend £80 - £150 on an adapter to connect a second LNB to your existing sky dish to point at eutelsat and watch it on Spanish/german/French tv then listen to radio 5 for the English commentary. If you use the right adapter you don't mess up the dish's alignment and with a second hand box you could get everything for about £80.

The sport still relies on sponsorship. Lower viewing figures means lower revenue. So what they gain in one hand they lose in the other.
Can't see many fans or sponsors being too happy in the long run.

I'd like to see the detail of the deal but I would say "Berine the Bas*ta*d" strikes again.

F1 has been going from strength to strength over the past few years, the teams appear to be controlling costs, and the racing has been great.

Quiet why UK terrestrial TV has to suffer I can't quite work out, I wonder which other countries have been similarly screwed over ??

David

I've been watching f1 for nigh on 40yrs (jeez I feel old),seen quite a few changes over that time but f1 goin to sky is a bad move IMO . Adverts and f1 don't work . BBC have a great format the way it is just now, Jake and the team do a sterling job both interesting and funny ....

O come on man why all the hate on sky? Viewings to go down? Yea right. Does the football premiership games have low view ratings too?

Sorry but I can't see what all the fuss is about. Ok I may be bias as I got and can afford sky and not everyone can but all I'm saying is that if f1 really is a popular sport, view ratings will still be good on sky

to get sky sports its a going to cost me a min of £140 odd a year. i cant justify that just for F1, why should i and many others get penalised for the BBC cutting costs and a subscription service starting to take over?

Viewing figures probably will go down, as many people; even those who have sky won't be willing to pay the extra.
Premiership football wasn't as widely available live before it went onto Sky so its not a fair comparison - without Sky the premiership wouldn't be what it is, F1 is an established worldwide sport already.

Yeh you can afford ,but I'm not being ripped off by skies inflated charges . So you would rather watch f1 with adverts every ten min ,fare play to you but I won't be

Will just have to watch the hilghlights on Iplayer, but how long before that wears thin.

Totally and utterly sucks

Way to thank all the loyal fans :shake:

I've just heard about this and in disgusted by this terrible news. Is this really how F1 is going to treat loyal fans? It's bad enough forking out near on £200 to watch the British GP at trackside, now we have to pay the same again to watch it on TV?!

I hope this bites bernie on the ass hard, they'll be a big backlash over this I feel. They'll certainly lose loyal fans, and certainly won't gain any new ones.

Could be the nail in the coffin for F1.

Autosport reporting that the teams are going to see "clarity" on the deal. McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh doesn't seem too happy and mentions that the "Concorde Agreement" stipulates free to air F1 coverage, however William F1 Adam Parr basically says "English football fans have had this for a while" well **** you Adam Parr...

**Mod comment: Please don't defeat the swear filter**

I stopped watching F1 when ITV got it and ruined it with adverts. It's a boring parade of money sodden cheats that twist the rules to suit themselves.

Another F1 style motorsport started up didn't? Took some of the F1 teams with it but I can't remember what it is called.

BTCC used to be good but that got lots of money and became boring. Used to watch it on Motors TV when I had sky. No adverts and decent commentary.

Sky should be forced to let BBC rebroadcast their content for a sub like they have to do with Virgin. Bet you direct sky subscribers would plummet if this were allowed.

I assume this means we're back to having adverts and missing all the good bits happening live?

F1 was the only thing that stopped me moaning about the TV licence so now i'll be back to moaning about it again.

The teams talked about it but it never happened.

All the races will be broadcast on the BBC just some of them won't be live, there is no need for the BBC to rebroadcast Sky's coverage.

I don't like football and don't want to pay just to get the F1.

It's leaving French TF1 (BBC1 du Frog) next year too. The only replacement I can see is a French subscription satellite channel which is also sending it via the web to subscribers. RTL in Germany seems to be continuing with free coverage.

I for one won't be paying Sky to watch F1, I think the BBC have done a great job since they got the gig from ITV. Adverts during the race or not I am not going to be ripped off by SKY and Bernie Eccelstone.

It's a black day for F1 fans
