I've read a number of comments about third-party batteries, from "perform better than the originals" to "barge pole job". Although I wouldn't be too concerned about a cheapo battery having a relatively short lifetime, I'm a bit more wary about suggestions that they may lack the circuitry that make the genuine ones safe. I gather that some can't be "read" by the camera so you get no indication of remaining charge, and at least one type for which you have to use a supplied charger because they will be ruined by the original charger (not sure why or how).
I don't know how likely it is that a Li-ion battery would leak, but I guess it would make a bit of a mess of the camera if it did. I also read a comment from someone who seemed generally happy with his clone battery but that it had started to swell after a while which made it difficult to squeeze into the camera. I can't help wondering whether it could swell while in the camera and get stuck!
I would like to think that branded third-party batteries would be OK, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone have any experience with Duracell replacement camera batteries (such as their clone of the Canon LP-E8) These ones are a slightly lower capacity than the originals (1020mAh vs. 1120mAh), but I guess I could live with that. Does anyone have any experience with them? I'm particularly interested to know:

- Do they charge OK using the original Canon charger?
- Is their charge level correctly reported by the camera?
