I've read a number of comments about third-party batteries, from "perform better than the originals" to "barge pole job". Although I wouldn't be too concerned about a cheapo battery having a relatively short lifetime, I'm a bit more wary about suggestions that they may lack the circuitry that make the genuine ones safe. I gather that some can't be "read" by the camera so you get no indication of remaining charge, and at least one type for which you have to use a supplied charger because they will be ruined by the original charger (not sure why or how).

I don't know how likely it is that a Li-ion battery would leak, but I guess it would make a bit of a mess of the camera if it did. I also read a comment from someone who seemed generally happy with his clone battery but that it had started to swell after a while which made it difficult to squeeze into the camera. I can't help wondering whether it could swell while in the camera and get stuck!

I would like to think that branded third-party batteries would be OK, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone have any experience with Duracell replacement camera batteries (such as their clone of the Canon LP-E8) These ones are a slightly lower capacity than the originals (1020mAh vs. 1120mAh), but I guess I could live with that. Does anyone have any experience with them? I'm particularly interested to know:

  • Do they charge OK using the original Canon charger?
  • Is their charge level correctly reported by the camera?

Whilst I have no experience with that battery or duracell, I bought 3rd party batteries for my Canon 50D.

I got them from 7dayshop as their own brand. I got two for £11 and they were rated at a higher 1600mAh.
They charged fine in a Canon charger and the battery reported fine with the Camera.

7dayshop do the LP-E8 for half the price of the duracell copy with higher capacity, see link below

Thanks for that. My wife actually mentioned that she found one on 7DS but I didn't get around to checking it out because I got side tracked by the Duracell one. That's available from AcerDirect at just under nine quid, so the 7DS one isn't that much cheaper. As you say though, it has an extra 100mAh. The Duracell brand name might inspire a bit more confidence, but I have bought stuff from 7DS before and it's been OK. IIRC they introduced free delivery a while back too, so I'll grab one and see how it goes.

Thanks again, especially the confirmation about the charger and status recognition by the camera.

I've got half a dozen 3rd party batteries for my 5D3 and 60D and the wife has about the same amount for her 650D and they have been fantastic from day one. They charge properly with the Canon charger and last at least as long as Canon originals. They were no name LP-E8 and bought in december 2010, bought for a 550D and now used on the wifes 650D and are still going strong.

I use hahnel. Bought few about 4 years ago and the are still working perfect , in camera, in grip and in charger. They are reported properly by the camera.

I've both genuine Canon batteries and 3rd party ones and had no issues - I'd generally only buy a good aftermarket battery though - Hahnel, Duracell, Energiser etc...

I find the oe and duacells work great but the non branded are not what they say on the label some are useless others are ok that I have
but none last as long as the oe and duracells

Thanks all - I've ordered a 7DS one. I don't know how picky they are about the manufacturers they choose for their branded stuff so Duracell might be a safer bet, but I'll see how it goes.

I've had some dodgy 3rd party batteries, needed a separate charger and got stuck in the camera due to poor fit and didn't register properly with the camera. - so definitely agree that you should stck with reputable brands

Another vote for the 7day shop batteries, I have had a few over the years and had no problems with them.
