BarrySprout's 52 for 2011 Week 33. Record

Hi Colin,
Very original take on theme. I prefer the second one, I think because of the reason you stated, in that the oof one probably doesn't mean anything.

I possibly agree with Davids theory about the pineapple looking super imposed due to the brains reasoning about what belongs where. Great submission as always

Don't think of an elephant!!
You're thinking of one aren't you?
Here we have the power of suggestion.

We just got back from a long weekend which we had planned for a few weeks.
One part of our trip involved driving down the banks of Loch Ness.
What do you think of when Loch Ness is mentioned? Nearly everyone I have mentioned the trip to from my Grandson to my Granny has said something along the lines of "maybe you'll see nessie"

So did the original story of Nessie stem from a wind up? Has every other sighting been a hoax or merely the effects of the power of suggestion?
All I can say is we saw what we saw, photographed what we saw, and posted it for this weeks theme.

Hi Colin, that's a nice shot of Loch Ness. Really good composition with good use of foreground, middle ground and background. I like the slight mist and haze which adds to the atmosphere. I would have liked a little more sharpness in the foreground.

I like your take on the theme - the power of suggestion is indeed very powerful and I find myself wondering about that object on the water...

Thanks Patrick. Re the sharpness : I had a couple of goes with sharpening on this but each time it led to a strange haloing above the castle and the hills, so i applied the minimum sharpening to avoid this.

ROFL... nice.. nessie in the loch!

Love it - nice colours !

Thanks Vince, I see what you mean in the water!

Excellent take on Power

I like the composition and would like a little more crispness over the ruins but I love the feel...as for Nessie...nope, no sign

Tina, next you will be telling me you didn't think of an elephant. See above re sharpening. Should have taken the time to apply mask sharpening, but didn't.

Wow, I'm off there in August, I'll keep an eye out...

Nice PPing by the way...:D (or is it...).

Cheers.

Cheers Andy. Very minimum pp'ing, honest!

:lol::lol: Excellent....I always new she was alive & kicking in there somewhere

Hiya Colin,

Now that has to be my favourite of your project so far .... mainly because I love the area and have done some Nessie hunting myself.

You have a stunning photo there ... and hey you even have Nessie in the pic

We will be doing a detour there again later this year, once we have toured the west coast islands. My son, Reuben, loved the place. He was only 3 years old on our last visit and keeps asking me to go back there ... so in August we will be heading that way again. Who knows .... maybe I will capture that million £ shot one day :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hey Andy,

Just noticed your post about going there in August .... let us know what dates you plan on being in the area, maybe we can meet up

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks michael, well worth visiting the area. When you go make sure you have plenty of time, memory cards and batteries.

Thanks Martin. Don't think I really did the landscape justice though. we didn't really have much time at urquhart castle as we were between overnight stays. The whole castle and grounds is very secluded and being as tight as I am I wouldn't spend £14 entrance fee for a ten minute photo opportunity.

It amazes me that folk spend that...I've been there innumerable times and it's always been too expensive to get me to put my hand in my pocket ;)

Hahaha, I don't blame you- I wouldn't either .

Believe it or not I did consider paying the entry (possibly only for me and not my wife :D) so that I could get the shot I wanted. Over my long weekend I had taken various shots for the Power theme but I had my plan for this shot set in my head. Just had to have a backup incase of bad weather.
What I had hoped to do was get down level with the castle and be able to show nessie just breaking the water. My plan was to merge my shot with a picture I took last year of a dolphin breaking the water and remove the fin. This is still what I did but not in the way I had originally planned.

This is a massive crop and enlargent to show nessie a bit better (albeit blurry)

The day before divided was picked as the theme I had managed to get the last coin I needed to find to make up a full set of royal shield coins which I planned on doing something with for a photograph (hadn't figured out what yet) So just had to get the time to take individual macro shots of all the coins and jigsaw them on the pc. Created a blurred background to try and make the coins jump out more.

I don't think you are supposed to keep these sets in your pocket...;)

My first thought was, "I don't get the connection....!!", then I saw it. Nice one...

I'd like to see these stacked, that is the joints connected...

Might have a go myself and see how it looks.

Cheers.

Absolutely love the divided shot! posiview is right - it takes a second glance to get it but isn't that what we're striving for?
Nice one.

Absolutely inspired idea for a shot, and I never even knew that they made an image until I saw your photo, so thank you for that. Every day is a school day :-)

My only niggle, is the background. I'm not convinced it is sympathetic to the subject matter. Maybe a nice bit of leather, or wood grain work better, or maybe it's the colour you used. Maybe it's just me, but I can't quite put my finger on what is bothering me. Maybe its the lack of shadow on the bg from the coins, making them look displaced.

Either way, I like the shot, and thank you for making me look at the few remaining coins in my pocket in a new light :-)

A great idea

I agree with Adie that for me the background just doesn''t work...not sure what would, something with a grain, not a smooth surface.

Love the view with all the parts of the shield in place, brilliant. I'm too mean to collect coins to do this ;)

Thanks Andy, you're right a mint set of coins would have made a much better shot but to buy a set costs a bit more than the £1.88 value of the coins (including £1 coin) and then you don't want to spend them either. I just wanted to gather them for the shot and they will be invested wisely now that they have served their purpose, possibly go towards my next beer.
As to stacking the coins, they are set out this way to give the shield it's proper shape and there should be a small gap with parts of the shield missing. The £1 coin has the complete image of the shield and I did take a shot of it too and even tried using it as a background with the other coins laid in place over it. Unfortunately this was going to be far too time consuming with trying to adjust the scale of the £1 accurately.

Adie

Thanks Adie, I took the individual shots on a black neoprene laptop case, thinking that would look quite good. It didn't due to the shots being very close up macro, it just looked as if they were shoty on a very untidy background. Had a look around the house to see what I could use instead and did tink of my well worn leather wallet, still wasn't wuite right though. So the background you see was entirely created in ps and all the original background and shadows removed. I liked the way it made the coins look as if they were floating. I'm not convinced that it's as good as I could have done either.

A great idea

Thanks Tina, I may have to try and rework this shot with a different background.
Just my laziness again. As I replied to Adie I think it could be made better. The fact that I kept the individual shots with the background removed just shows that I already knew I was going to have to do better and repost. As usual I just felt the week was slipping away again and I wanted to make sure I got the image up.

Can you believe that we have been doing this for 19 weeks now? Even if my photography hasn't improved it has certainly made me more aware of how quickly time passes. I'm starting to notice myself getting older on a daily basis now :'(

Hiya Colin,

I'm going to go against the grain here (pardon the pun), and say I absolutely  everything about this photo ;)

For me the background works well, with the sort of wood grain effect against the metal coins. They definitely look like they are floating.

I never knew that the coins made up this pattern. Learn something new every day :D Now you realise I am going to have to raid Reuben's money boxes to find these coins so I can try the same setup  Another project added to my list :D

I think you have got the spacing spot on to form the whole picture, something I noticed right away and was quite taken aback by what I saw ... a real surprise.

I think you have done a fantastic job with this photos (only niggle would be regards the colour of the frame ... but very minor point ... I would have perhaps gone for a single more solid border and picked one of the darker colours from the background, but that is just my opinion).

Overall a super pic

Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

Seems the design on the back of these coins is a well kept secret. I only realised it a few weeks ago myself. This design was introduced in 2008 so they have been around a while. Took me a few weeks before I got one of the 50 pence coins in my change.

Hiya Colin,

I told a colleague at work today about your photo, he didn't know about the coins making the pattern either and googled about it. Apparently the full shield can be seen on the back of a £1 coin, minted from the same year.

Now I will be more observant as I hand over my change and have to see if I can collect the set.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thats right dawn, I also took a shot of the £1 coin which I tried briefly to use as a background for the other coins. It just wasn't working out for me. Maybe I'll give it another go tomorrow.

Hi Colin

great idea for DIVIDED & well shot  The background makes me think of a waterfall for some reason & I really like it , gives a more abstract feel to the picture & makes it appear as though the coins are floating rather than laid on something

Thanks Lynne, that's two votes in favour of the background. That's good enough for me to leave as is. Had a play with the shots again today but I didn't think any other ways I did it were an improvement. And besides that it's New Themes Eve so onwards we go.

Colin,

Power...beautiful capture.. but all i can see is gorgeous colours, blue water and marvellous shapely hills to the background... i'd be rubbish on a nessie hunt..

Divided...i never knew they were being issued for this sort of purpose..ie to be put together.. head in the sand time yet again..

Thanks Kev, so you couldn't even find Nessie in the crop shop? To much German beers methinks :D

Inflation has taken it's toll this week. Last week I only needed 88p for my shot, this week it's went up to £16.50. Had to get the ten pound note from Mrs Sprout as it's to big a note to trust me with for more than five minutes.
