Bargains Thread

My concern would over whether the very obvious signs of use externally were matched by equally heavy use internally. Not that the two are always in step; I recall an interview with Beverley Goodway of the Sun who said that he used his Mamiya RZ67s heavily, and sold them on when they were about worn out internally - but having been used carefully in a studio looked immaculate. But then I'm a pessimist who always looks at things realistically, rather than how I'd like them to be ;)

Most of my cameras look like they've been used by Don McCullin but those that have been tested have either been fine or sorted out by Miles after a quick CLA. Of course if you pick up a camera for £40 that usually sells for £80 and have to spend £50 on a CLA then that's not a bargain but if you pay £650 for a camera you would normally have to spend £1000 on and all it needs is a bit of TLC then you're quids in. Of course every time you buy a secondhand camera it's a risk but it's a risk worth taking IMHO.

it say's the counter is 9000, so 9000 rolls, which is quite a few
I dunno how much can be read in to that, usually we are talking about slr's and shutter actuations which doesn't apply to an rf, so I guess its mostly film transport wear to worry about.

My Xpan is in similarly s*** external condition but works perfectly well. The paint rubs off them very easily.

Good to know that the externals are certain to be worn

On the "9000" question, the manual of my RZ67 (similarly a roll film camera) has this to say:

We recommend that the camera body should be serviced at least
about every 50,000 exposures (about 5000 rolls of 120 film): your roll
film holders about every 20,000 exposures; your leaf shutter lenses
about every 10, 000 exposures.

I assume that even an XPan has a shutter....:D 20,000 exposures would be around 1000 rolls at 20 per cassette. But I know that you can't assume that all cameras are equal in the service frequency.

Bargain....(y)

This was worth a gamble as the two lenses are worth about £35 anyone get it?:- £38 plus £5 postage

Olympus OM1 manual SLR with;
Standard lens
Wide angle 28mm lens
Flash unit

Not used for 20 years but no known problems at time of last use.
No lens caps for some reason.
28mm lens case is in poor condition

Yeah even if the body is shot hopefully the lenses will be fine.

That looks like a great kit. If it was black, and without the telephoto, I'd be all over that!

portra is 26.99 but it doesn't include shipping

That's for 135 format though, not 120.

Strangely, for the first time I can remember, 7dayshop don't seem to have any Portra for sale in 120 format. They did recently have an offer for Portra 400 that included shipping.

Recently I was introduced to this shop, never heard of it before but it has some interesting less than run of the mill stuff, plus ilford paper (which is what I was interested in) seems well priced.

Anybody used/been to it ?, think its Kent or somewhere equally inaccessible

Always good when there's a Photography shop I didn't even know existed in my home town!

They are probably all under water :(

joxby - thanks for that link - looks like a good place for film.

If anyone sees an Olympus OM-1n at a great price let me know - I miss that camera, it's perfect in my mind.
What would you consider a great price?

For the body - if light seals are recently replaced maybe £25-£35 (there are a few things I like more - no hotshoe and black I'd pay more for - really don't want a hotshoe if I can avoid it - bangs into my side). If the light seals need replacing maybe £5 less.

With a lens - standard 50 1.8 maybe £45 or so. Different lens, different price, I guess.
