Barclays Photographer of the 20 Seasons

I am actually shocked how poor these appear considering the wealth of images taken throughout the season.

They seem to be more along the lines of moments captured not the best photos, the wayne rooney over head kick I prefer the photo on this site
I like the peter schmichael shot but and the Beckham shot is again another one of those moments to be remembered and yes its not a bad shot but a dead ball photo not really a difficult shot to capture is it?

And the behind the goals shotsare generally a lot of luck rather than timing aren't they when triggered by your short lens.

Very unimpressed with that lot.

I've seen better!

Is one of the photos really meant to be captioned "1Tips to lose stomach fat" (sic) ? :D

I have a feeling the jungle drums will be on overtime.. well we are overdue a visit and we are being naughty :)

If that's the "Shortlist" I'd hate to see the ones that didn't make the grade!

Football "action" shots without a ball in the frame - pointless and frankly unacceptable!

Errrr sorry but thats *******s. All of the action shots there have the ball in the frame, also you don't know if that website have messed up the cropping of shots like the Ginola one (which will have been shot on film, with a manual focus lens....good luck getting anything that good without years and years of practice, the photographer who took that is one of the best around)

Have you ever shot a game of football before? good luck getting anything close to the quality of the shots shown here, i think your being very disrespectful to some extremely professional, highly skilled photographers!

As for peoples comments about the shots not being "good" it took me a while to get my head round it but it isn't about how technically good the shot is or the composition, its about content.

The problem with the shortlist is they haven't given the story behind each shot and the significance of it, some like the Beckham shot are obvious. That goal launched his career. The Gerrard shot shows what he means to Liverpool fans, a home grown captain adored by the fans.......

Personally i like all of the shots on the shortlist.

Can't say im surprised at the lack of input here from the people who are full time sports photographers.

I'm amazed Tony is still bothering to give advise when most people ignore it or think they know better!

Sorry mate but i still cant see anything in those images which would make them iconic or the best in the last 20 years, if you could explain what is so good/momentous about Ronaldo "mincing" on a football field id be grateful, the "floodlit" goalie one is OK

Sorry Gary but your a lost cause

Nice tagline by the way, you been upsetting the Canon shooters again? :D

No David Ashdown????????
Maybe there are "special" entry conditions?

The full frame ones look better but that is still a very mediocre bunch for 20 years effort

While i agree that theres been far better ones published, i wouldnt go as far as calling them mediocre.

You need to look at each one individually, for a start some of them were taken on film without the help of autofocus.
Now while the film ones may not be in the top 3, you really need to take into consideration the skill needed to catch a shot like that.

Personally i love that Ginola and big dunc shot. Takes some skill to see those shots, manually focus it and fire the shutter and the perfect time

I wonder which will get chosen? I looked up Hamish Brown, his work seems to be more advertising, photoshopped to hell and gone, not really what I think of as sport photography - more images of sportsmen. The ginola one is the best of them for me, but I'll bet that isn't the winner.

Do we know if any of these were taken with manual focus because by the time the Premier League started the Nikon F4,Canon EOS1 and Minolta 9000 had been on the market for 3-4 years.

As I said in a previous post none of these make you go wow the way the Jeff Astle header deforming the ball does and that was manual everything,it's just that 20 years of the best pro's in the game have surely produced better than this,in fact I bet if every football tog here on TP put up their best shot of the last 20 years we would get more wow shots

So there in lies a challange Nigel?,
oh!, but wait!, we can't post pro footy pics:nono:. so we all will have to agree to disagree i'm afraid:shake:. lets move on!! Kind regards Graham

Loving the shot of the LFC defenders - great capture.

Liking the Schwarzer dive with the floodlights

Don't see what the attraction is with the bloodied face, and Becham's leg looks like he's suffering with rickets!!

I wouldn't say they're the best images that could have been chosen - I've seen better.

Nope the Rugby Union lot :D

I didn't think much of them either until looking at the other link. The Ginola shot is the one I think. Closely followed by the great Dane and Derby Delight and Bloody Hell shot. Big dunc is another. The hull header is another that has something about it.

I hate football and even I can see it's not that easy to get some of those :)

:D

Welcome back  good to see you back on here

most did not enter due to the terms and conditions of Barclays the competition sponsor

money is everything, not necessary the glory of winning.. Barclays were raping us of licencing rights - ie enter and they can use anything for free instead of paying
Makes sense

So this is not in fact anywhere near a list of the best EPL photographs in 20 years, more a list of photographers and their work who don't mind Barclay's ripping them off
