Seeing as it's now that time of year where us hairy chested blokes like to get outside and cook bits of meat over naked flames, I thought it might be interesting to start a thread to find out who prefers what method of barbequing, gas or coal. I apologise if this has been done before.

Personally and after several years of experimenting, I have settled on coals on a kettle drum. I believe the taste is better and I feel it is a more relaxed way of cooking.

So lets hear everyones preference and why and also if you have any hints or tips to share it might be nice to hear those as well. I have attached a poll to this as well.

What about wood? That's a proper BBQ flavour

Yep..as a S/African (and BBQ virtually being a national dish:)) I think I have the experience to comment and have to to agree...can't get better than a wood BBQ!

Dont let the tree huggers hear that!! I use gas as its a lot quicker than messing about and waiting for charcoal/wood to get going. If the meat is marinated it usually eats well

 aah Alan, but the waiting for the wood burn down to coals adds to the 'ambience' of the occasion! As you say, marinated meat does usually eat well which is why I spend alot of time in preparing it.

Your right of course! Patience is a virtue:lol:

Gas? why not just stick over the gas hob?

Er because you don't bbq inside.

Gas is quick and easy and can be used all day long off and on cooking when people want to eat.

You may not BBQ inside, but the whole point of a BBQ is the extra flavour from the fire. As it is the same gas you will get the same flavour from the gas hob. OK the smoke detector may go off, but you will have saved the cost of a BBQ.

I use gas. You can add wood chips, and I also use Rosemary to burn to add flavour. Beauty of gas is that u can be up and running quickly, use it like an oven and compared to charcoal BBQs I have experienced I find that stuff like chicken or bangers are cooked inside without being too black or smokey on outside.

Cooking Barbeque is an art form only a man can master! personally I love black and smokey :D I'd live off barbeque if I could and even bought a little £10 bucket thing from Tesco to save wasting fuel on a couple of chops.

There is nothing like a proper BBQ: It is called a braai! :-) Yes, another South African here. As circumstance would have it, I had to get a gas one, so I went for a Weber Q gass thingy. Not too bad for a gas bbq. But there is something to be said for an evening bbq, watching the fire, putting the world to right with a beer in hand, and sizzling the meat to perfection. Ooh yes, bordering on a religious experience! And please do not foget the patato salad!! :)

As a fellow South African. There is nothing better than standing around the fire with a cold beer in hand.

It simply has to be a coal barbi with hickory thrown in and marinated steak..........forget the frozen burgers and sausages.........steak all the way

We use gas I cook, I put herbs and woodchips on the coals and it tastes just as good as a charcoal BBQ. Quality meat, marinaded for a coule of hours at least, decent salad selection and a nice cold Pinot Grigio in hand works for me...

You don't cook a gas flame on a gas BBQ, they have a tray of coals which heat up. You can add what you want to the coals or just let the juices drip through and flare up on the coals.

Currently using Coal at the minute but quite simply I love BBQ so would eat BBQ cooked on wood, coal or gas :)

Charcoal! charcoal all the way! good charcoal gives the meat better flavours by the way. ^_^

You guys! I am considered an honorary saffa as a few of my pals at work are from SA so i have a selection of braais; gas, and both a large and small charcoal. I know you will struggle with this bit but i am the braai master and i'm a girl!:lol:

By the way, i usually have a few Savannahs when i am at the coals!

Charcoal with woodchips. Gas is the lowest form of pathetic cheating wussiness.

Charcoal all the way and wouldn't even bother making one unless I'm going for a selection of quality meats. Does my head in when people buy the cheapest sausages, some god awful frozen burgers and then call it a barbecue after sticking all that into their Tesco economy buns and making it swim in ketchup.

Our local butcher does the most amazing BBQ pack for £24. Easily feed 6-8 people with quality meat. Home made burgers, chinese ribs with hardly any bone at all, chicken portions, any type of sausage you like......damn I know what I am doing tomorrow now

PS, its not a BBQ unless you are using coal/wood.

Some 50 miillion years of evolution and it's come to this . . .

(I'm not at all a big fan of BBQs, I'm afraid).

Ummm BBQ:love:

Charcoal every time for me, although I have used Gas on the odd occasion when only doing a small amount:naughty:

Wood is good as well, chuck a few herbs in too:thumbs:

As someone who prides themselves on their cooking, I usually like to do the BBQing. Though I am getting my fella to build a barrel bbq for me custom to how I want it. I might let him use it first if he is building it.
