How do I get myself into these things

A workmate of my husband wants to hire me to take pics at her Ruby Wedding party. She and her hubby are heavily into ballroom dancing and this will be a big part of their "do".

They had quotes from pro togs for about £900 but as Im taking on gigs for free as Im learning, they are very interested in using me instead (just paying expenses and for the photos they want). Of course there will be the usual disclaimer about me NOT being a pro and they may end up with very few usable pics etc etc.

She still seemed keen after this, but I must admit to wondering whether this is something out of my league. She does want a set of static portraits, but its the "on the dancefloor" ones that worry me :bonk:.

What sort of lens would be recommended for this kind of thing? Is it as hard as it sounds to shoot (i.e fast moving objects - well, as fast as elderly folk can Waltz I guess - in low light, with shiny clothes as well probably)???

If I dont think I can do the job, I wont take it on - any comments or tips from anyone??

Hey no poop sherlock. ;)

Why not get in touch with a local dance class and ask if you can go along and practice. I'm sure they'd probably be quite keen if you offer to let have any shots you get.

Then you'll know if you're comfy taking on the job or not. Ideally, if you do it, you should be 60% confident and 40% scared. ;)

Hmm I've shot some Lindy Hop dance and it can be a touch challenging. One things for sure, if it's at night, you're probably going to need some very fast lenses and some decent flashes with at least one set up as a slave around the room.

Just shoot lots and expect a good proportion to be blurry. If you want to see the results of my attempt take a look here (most of the better ones from later in the night are at the end)

Thanks very much!

Very useful to see your pics Alex, cheers.

Nothing like a few shorts to loosen the trigger finger ;)

Oh good luck, similar requirements as gig photography I imagine. IF they are heavily into it, pressumbly they attand some club or classes themselves, maybe suggest that you go along with them, get a few shots and see how you get on?
