Could I please have some recommendations for a backpack that will take a Canon 1D with Canon 300mm f2.8 attached, plus a bit of extra room for convertors and a few other bits & pieces.

Thanks - Simon.

How about a think tank street walker pro?

The Lowepro Mini Trekker AW just takes the 300 2.8 with body attached and lens hood reversed. There's space for the converters, spare cards and other bits too.

Thanks for the suggestions. Has anyone had any experience with my set up and a Lowepro Flipside 300?

+1 for the Lowepro Mini Trekker AW

I used to use it for the 1D + 300mm and it was ideal as it fit very snugly and weighted next to nothing! (+ it is cheap as chips)

Thanks. Do you know if it would still fit in the Flipside 300 if either the 1.4x or 2x extender was also fitted to the lens/body?

Just to add I guess my combo with 1.4x or 2x convertors attached would fit in the Think Tank Street Walker Pro as it's designed to take up to a 400mm f2.8?

I know it's not cheap, but then I'd rather spend the money and get something that I know will do the job. All I want it for is to carry my 1D with 300mm f2.8 attached and have the extra length if I wanted to also fit either the 1.4x or 2x extenders. Plus some storage for the convertors when not in use. If the Flipside 300 will do the job, then I'll get that, but I'm not sure it will?

I can get the 300/2.8 + 7D + 2x tc (with hood reversed) in the Lowepro Mini Trekker AW - its a tight fit though.
With the hood in the shooting position and a 2x tc you need a min of 510mm.
with the hood reversed it comes down to 380mm.

Thanks Roy. Perhaps I shouldn't discount the Mini Trekker then? Sorry to be a pain, but is there any chance you could post a picture with the body/2x convertor/lens in the bag so I can get an idea of exactly how tight it is.

Thanks - Simon.

There you go Simon, like I said it is tight. To be quite honest if I were buying a new bag for the 300 I would buy one that would take it with the hood in the shooting position as I find it a pain in the butt to put on/off. I transport my combo in a holdall in the car (with hood in shooting position) and then carry with a R strap or on the tripod, only using the backpack in case of rain so it suits my purpose.

Thanks for that Roy. I know what you mean about having the hood ready in the shooting position. That would be more ideal. Maybe I should look at a Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 or something simular? Suggestions welcome please!Would this work with the hood in the shooting position? It looks massive though!

Hi Simon,
I have the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 and use it with my 1D + 500mm f/4. The Hood has to be detached but will take lens and body + 1.4 or 2x converter. Not much room for much else, has a nice adjustable collar for support of the lens inside. Not sure of the size of your set up with the hood on, the bag does look big but comfortable to carry with a nice adjustment on the shouder straps + AW cover.

Thanks Gordon. This choosing the a backpack business is a nightmare and getting more expensive! :)

Unfortunately I don't have the lens here with me at the moment, it's in the UK with the Mrs who will be bringing it back for me as hand luggage a week Sunday, so am unable to measure the 1D, 300mm f2.8 with hood in shooting position, plus the 2x Convertor fitted (to give the maximum length needed). Can anyone help?

Thanks again
Simon.

I have already given you the figure with the 7D + 2x both with and without hood in shooting position Simon (see my earlier post #15) the difference between the 1D and 7D on the depth cannot be much.
As far as I can tell the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 is 61 cm internal which means the 300 should fit in easily - with the hood in the shooting position.

Sorry Roy, so you did. I'm in the middle of doing other stuff at the moment and not paying attention properly! So yes the Lens Trekker 600 would work with the hood in the shooting position, if just a little too large if anything. I need to make my mind up...

Thanks to everyone for all the input.
Simon.

With regard to the mini trekker - are you planning on doing much distance?

I don't rate that bag as one to have to walk far with it strapped to your back.

You are correct with the internal height dimension Roy.

I use the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 for the 500mm f4L. The bag takes the lens with the body attached and lens hood reversed with or without either converter too. It's a well padded bag, so gives plenty of protection, but it's a bloody great bulky thing - I'm not a lover of it tbh.

The bag would easily take the 300 2.8 with body and converter attached and the hood in the shooting position with room to spare. Probably a bit OTT for that combo though?

Yes, I do some reasonable distance.

It would be more ideal to have a backpack that will take the combo with the hood in the shooting position, but TBH I think the Lens Trekker 600 is too big for my purpose.

At the moment I'm keep going back to the Think Tank Street Walker Pro, but could be persuaded into a Flipside 300 if I knew it would all fit in with the 2x convertor fitted.

Over the past week I've done a lot more walking with my gear than usual. I've generally been carrying the camera and 7D/300mm F4 and had my accessories in the bag (beanbag, drinks, TC etc) so not much weight. Even with that little I found the design of the bag to be uncomfortable.

I remember on one occasion in the past I set out with my camera and 120-300mm F2.8 in the bag and was very glad I didn't have to go far. That combo fit - but with a convertor on it stretched the bag and made it even less comfortable.

Needless to say I'm on the lookout for something different!

edit and have just dropped across the Flipside 400 - which looks like it is perfect and far superior than the 300

F Stop Loka gets my vote. Pricey, but fantastic.

I was having the same debate a week ago. I was looking at either a Tamrac expedition 8 or a lowepro vertex 300. I did look at a lowepro runner 450, but thought that maybe a bit tight as I too wanted to be able to carry in shooting position and possibly extenders attached. But in the end I managed to get a very good, hardly used (still had the silicone gel inside!) lens trekker 600 II. It fits easily, well padded and holds it firm. I attach a tripod down the one side and have the option of attaching a scope to the other. Pocket at front carries spare batteries, extender, bino's and it has 9 memory card slots in the top. Very comfy with quick access. I am considering cutting a foam block as their is plenty of room to put in bottom of bag to hold a wide angle lens to for trips.

With all the above said, I am very pleased. With just the camera and lens it light and easy to use:thumbs:

I am sure I have seen the 600 used as a support too once on a trip to skomer last year, guy sat behind it with the lens resting on top.

After much deliberation and discounting it in an earlier post I've opted for and ordered a Lens Trekker 600 II AW.

The reasons being, the convenience of having the hood in the shooting position ready to go was too much to resist. Even during the short time I've owned my 300mm f2.8, there have been a number of occassions where the opportunity to capture a shot has come along, but by the time I've bolted it all together the opportunity has passed. I'm also liking Bren Escapes idea of a foam cut out in the bottom of the bag for one additional lens like my 17-40L or 24-105L should the opportunity arise for a landscape shot. I just hope I don't find the Lens Trekker 600 too large and bulky, this is my main concern.

Thanks again for everyones input, it's been a great help. Hopefully I've made the right decision and I think I've just made 2 of the 3 bags I currently own redundant!

Simon.

My Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW arrived in the post this morning. It's hugeeee... Impressed with the quality of the bag though, but I guess it should be for the money. I won't have my lens back until Sunday to see how it all fits.

I finally got my lens back and a long story, but I ended up with a brand new (old stock) Lens Trekker 600 original version for £95. From what I gather the newer version II is a few inches longer and of course £50 more.

So, my 1D with 2x Convertor fitted and 300mm f2.8 with the hood in shooting position fit nicely inside the bag, but there is no spare room for anything else. I guess this is a good thing as there is no space for it to rattle around.

Of course you still have the external pocket at the front of the bag, which holds everything else I need, including a 1.4x convertor, spare battery, filter and lens caps, but no extra space for an additional lens. If you wanted to carry a spare lens, you would need an external Lowepro Sliplock Lens case or simular. Just for reference, it does specifically mention in the Lowepro bumf that comes with the bag that it is recommended by Lowepro for the 300mm f2.8.

So all in all, very happy with my purchase.

Simon.
