Aurora alert

I'm in the north of Scotland and there's not a cloud in the sky, at the moment. I bet there will when it gets dark if the alert is still as strong as it is now! The last time we had such strong conditions I didn't see the sky for a week.

On a brighter note, it was very thick cloud on Monday night at 10pm when I first noticed an aurora alert but by 2am it had almost completely cleared to give a fine display and was still going at 5am.

Fingers and toes crossed for tonight.

Well, there's a surprisingly clear sky and a balmy 12C. Off out for a few hours to see what can be seen until the midgies rip me apart.

That's it!

I had a look out at about 11 pm but there was no sign. I like my sleep so that was it for me.
Unlikely to see it in Wales unless it's a major event.
You'll just have to move North...
Nothing to see in Edinburgh due to cloud cover.

All of the times we've had potential aurora sightings (although admittedly not many because of where we live) either its been cloudy or we haven't been able to see anything anyway :-(

This is high on my list over the next few months.. a decent aurora shot, haven't really had the time for the last couple of years but keeping a close eye out during the winter. Difficulty around North Wales now is finding somewhere not swamped with hundreds of people when the alert is promising

There was a biggie earlier this year so we went up a local hill, there was some cloud with some breaks in it, we hung around for an hour or so but then gave up as it appeared to be getting more cloudy, turns out if we had waited for a further hour we would have seen it.

One thing I have been wondering is how long do these things take to arrive and how long do they last. The alert yesterday was in the afternoon but there doesn't seem to be any indication when the peak visibility will be and how long the event will last. Anyone got any idea?

Well that was underwhelming. I stayed out for about 3 hours but the aurora had peaked earlier and was on the wane when I started looking from various sites. Cloud had rolled in by the time I went out even though it was clear as I arrived back from a meeting at 9.30ish. A friend told me there was a wonderful display 25 miles away from here about 11.30pm but all I saw was cloud with a few openings.

I only had to step out of my front door last night to shoot them.
I could see the vertical rays with naked eye. 5sec exposure @F1.4 and pretty windy hence the foliage movement.

Thank you for the web sites. There are just so many types of photography, and I had a go at my first astro ones tonight. Feeling inspired. No sign of the aurora though.

I opened this worried i was getting some information on the latest, super-duper computer virus, so I'm now very happy !!

I love these type of photos, always so magical looking, definitely need to keep a watch on that site
