Ok I apologise now if the folowing sounds rambled as I am not the best at trying to explain myself sometimes.

Now I don't profess to being the greatest photographer olut there (the opposite in fact), but like many of us I would love the oppertunity to make sales on my images or just for taking shots for people.

I have been doing my own research into various things like freelance and libraraies so there is no problem there.
But what confuses the brains out of me is this......................

At what point should I start keeping a record of what I spent to get my shot and what I earn (if anything) of the shots I take. Is there any idiot friendly info that explains this, or how do you guys go abut it all?
I am a worrier by nature and I would hate to get in trouble for not reporting any extra money I may be earning. The whole "tax man" thing just turns my brain to mush.

I know that getting the odd £40 for covering a friends party or the odd Ebay sell is not going to amount to much or add anythign extra to what I already earn from my everyday job, but I would like to make sure I do thigs right.

.................................does any of that make sense????

When I was making cards and selling them, I noted down every sale and phoned the Inland Revenue to ask what I should do. When I said I probably make about £30 a month on cards in profit, they laughed and said I wouldn't worry.

But with photos, I wouldn't know.

I know that I will never be in a postion to be making a living off of my shots, but the last thing I want to do is get "caught out".

So maybe call the inland revenue and see what they say?

It can't hurt, at least then you know.

Hi ,
Some Questions first...
1, are you already employed, or are you starting a business
in photography.
I would keep a record any way.
all you need is a simple spreadsheet IE. income and outgoings.
would be ok.
Hope this helps :)

Already fullytime employed in a normal everyday job. No photography business start up plans, photogaphy is my hobby and it would be nice to "cash in" every once in a while. But at the same time I don;t want to get into trouble for "cashing in".

I guess I am just after peoples thought to help make it all a little bit clearer in my head.

if your selling to friends family etc wouldnt worry to much about it. Ebay if you make over £4000 i think it is then inland revenue will take an interest. If you sell to a buisness & want vat reciepts etc i would declare depending on amount.

I would keep a record and only inform the IR if you start to make alot of regular sales. Once you do inform the IR then you will have to pay extra national insurance and stuff.

Going by the amount alot of people spend on camera gear each year, small sales here and there wont realy amount to more than expenses surely? I wouldnt worry, but worth keeping records for piece of mind and evidence.
