No
I bought a dell xps 10 from argos the other day, got it home and no UK plug in the box to plug into the transformer.
So off i pop back to argos to see what they could do.
It was the last one in stock so the manager could not check, so the she said to me it doesnt come supplied with a UK plug, just a 3 pin european effort as dell dont supply the UK plug and if i wanted i could buy an adapter.

The box had previously been opened and resealed with an argos checked seal sticker across the opening, usually done on returned items.

I told her it is illegal to sell an electrical appliance with out a plug that meets uk standards or an adapter for said plug bs1363and whom ever had checked the item, which i presumed to be a returned item, due to the sticker had not checked it properly.

She said no it isnt and take the advice or not but im not getting a refund
The item was not on the 30 day return policy and as she thought it was not defective i had no case for warranty return.

I dug my heals in and told her in no uncertain terms she is wrong, eventually i got a refund.

Argos used to be superb for customer service, is this a one off or have others had any bad experiences with them?
Or any other suppliers you might want to mention.....

Possibly, but then if it was knackered id not be able to return it forms full refund

No, Argos have always had a reputation for selling on stuff people had taken back faulty, at least back 30 years when we had an issue trying to get a working stereo radio/cassette out of them. Every one they had in stock was an opened box and faulty. I remember them being on Watchdog about the same time talking about exactly these problems.

I think Argos is a long way from the service level they once offered.

Surprised the "manager" was unaware that a UK spec poer connection is a must.

The days of adapters should be long over.

I don't use Argos much these days as I think they are under a much changed business that has led to my not using their sister company Homebase.

As for PC power leads (The kettle connector type), in clearing out my garage/workshop I have found over 50 of the things (along with "Cloverleaf" types too). Most are brand new and never used...... what to do with them? Bit surprised that the OP didn't have one lying around.

They seem to go at £3-4 delivered on the bay.

It's as SickAsAParrot said.

First rule of thumb with Argos is:

If it's the last one in stock - don't buy it!

Hi,

I think you may find the Laptop was previous store display stock. This would explain why the box was open with a sealed stickler on it. They would then be able to sell it as it is not return stock.
Mainframe tracks all return and re-sold items so they would know if it was returned stock or not.

The reason why items with digital storage are excluded from the 30day gtee is because they cant re-sell them due to data protection.
There was a case years ago before the 30day exclusion was put in place where a customer purchased something and found pictures of the previous customers children and personal data.

This then became wide spread across most retailers.
Recently in Maplin I had to return a none faulty external hard drive. They did it with out quibble but were unable to re stock the item as it was previously purchased.

Assuming the stock was ex-display the Kettle lead you get that plugs into the power pack was not re-packed into the box. Dell do supply both uk and European/American plugs that you then plug into the power supply. Who ever re-packed the lead simply didn't put the Uk plug back in the box

In this case of course a refund should have been offered as the item was not as described with no arguments.

Argos rules/guidelines/30 day guarantee do not override your legal rights under the sale of goods act

Gave up buying from Argos after receiving and returning half a dozen previously opened items in as many months!

Stopped buying from Argos when they started calling me Number 6.

 @ serow

For anyone who doesn't know it, on any electrical item or appliance sold with a plug in the uk the plug must be a UK standard 3 pin which must not be removable by hand (i.e. you need a screwdriver). It's illegal to sell items with foreign plugs plus or minus an adaptor.

meh, i normally lop the plug off anyway to shorten the 20 billion meter long cable :D

I bought my husband a ring for his birthday from Argos about 9 years ago. We were flying off to Florida for two weeks and flying back on his birthday. The ring was an impulsive last minute buy, just so i had something small that he could open on the plane. I knew that it would be too big, but was told that it would be no problem to pop in with it when we got back and they would send it away to be resized.

So, thats exatly what we did. Only after two weeks we hadn't heard anything, so called in to see what was going on with it. We were told it was being resized and would be back the following week. Following week we went back in, and were told it still wasn't back. Asked to see the manager, and were told we couldn't. Asked why not, we were told that the manager couldn't help us at the moment, come back later. Went back later to be told the ring couldn't be resized because of the pattern. We were understandibly not impressed, and the lady couldn't tell us why we hadn't been told this before when they had had the ring for almost a month. We asked for a refund, and were told we couldn't have one as we didn't have the ring :cuckoo: Again we asked to see the manager, and were told we couldn't. When we insisted the very rude sales assistant said "Well she won't say anything different!" :bang: Eventually our raised voices brought the manager out, and when we explained the situation she said the same thing, we couldn't have a refund as we didn't have the ring. It was only when i shoved the receipt under her nose and shouted "Thats because you've f&$*%$g got it!!!!!" that she gave in and reluctantly gave us a refund :shake:

We took our money to a high street jeweller, who very kindly sold us a nicer ring and got it resized within 2 days. He still wears it now ;)

Argos suck, big time:thumbsdown:

admittedly never buy much from them that has the possibility of going wrong, however, never had much of an issue with them.....

The checked sticker is applied in the warehouse before it is sent to the store to say that the contents have been inspected and are ok:),obviously the warehouse op hasn't bothered to check it properly:nono: and just plastered the sticker on

Retail workers have always been low paid, the problem lies more with companies trying to do the same job with less personnel. So the checker is overworked and under pressure and does a slack job.

When checking items in everyday you find nothing wrong 99% of the time and trust certain companies goods to be a safe bet, occasionally this bites your bum:).We refused some dehumidifiers this morning for having a euro plug strangely enough:)
