Are Nikon and Canon the two main/best brands?

You could do a lot worse than an Olympus.

A lot of it is down to the range of goodies. No matter what you shoot you can select kit to do the job from Canon and Nikon, the same cannot be said for the other brands.

From pocketwizards to grips..... most of the accessories will be for Canon and Nikon.

Then there are the lens ranges, I don't think anyone else make things like tilt shift lenses and when you want an ultra wide angle or long tele then much more accessible if you are Canon or Nikon.

careful now, you'll have irrate members making posts on other forums complaining that this forum is biased against canon...

:tumbleweed:

I agree that the Big names have a larger range of lenses, however, for the photography I do, the zuiko range of lenses I own are fine and, frankly as good as I need. As for other gadgets, I have a power grip, extension tubes, radio remote release, oh, all sorts. After all, I'm not pro............ :) I doubt I deserve so much :)

Point noted, Matty - nice one! :D

You're right about ultra wides, Olympus do a superb 7-14mm (14-28mm equivalent) but it is rather expensive and the cheaper 9-18mm (18-36mm equivalent) may not be wide enough for some. However, I think Olympus rules the roost with telephoto options, both primes and zooms.

Really specialist lenses like tilt/shift are virtually out of the question, though. It's true that many can be fitted with an adapter and manual focus is not an issue, but the crop factor works against Olympus in this instance because you generally want a wide angle with these type of lenses. :)

Olympus rules the roost with kit lenses, that's for sure. And the HG and SHG glass is the best out there, period. The 7-14 is a stormer as are all the f2's. Ok, there may not be much available from other manufacturers but at least that means that Oly users have to buy the best.

Oly sensors have always been a bit hampered by their size but for a large majority of users this is not an issue as the images are more than acceptable. The E-5 is the best Oly dSLR yet.

The problem with many people buying their first dSLR is that they only see the big two and therefore follow like sheep. Retailers don't help as they get better margins from these brands.

Hello,

Do Nikon and Canon produce the best cameras?

Cheers.

Define "best" is it value for money, ultimate image quality at native ISO settings, at high ISO, ease of use or what?

When I bought my first DSLR (an E500) I knew that both Canon and Nikon had offerings that beat it but at twice the price, price for price it left them standing. Four years, several new bodies and some superb lenses later I have not changed my mind. I even have a mirrorless system that shares those Zuiko lenses and, a big plus for me, I can use those FD lenses that have sat on my top shelf for 20 years after Canon abandoned the format:thumbs:

There is some truth in this, but then I have a (Sony) vertical grip for my camera, I could have bought a Chinese knock-off copy for a lot less but it lacks a lot of the controls on the original so would have been a false economy.

If I want tilt shift (I don't) it's a faff as I either have to order from Russia (arax, hartblei) or get a Mirex adapter from Germany and a Mamiya lens. And yes, at the long end I can't get anything longer than a 600/4. Wide angle isn't a problem unless you want wider than 12mm on full frame (there are 8mm fisheyes as well).

Conversely, the camera is superb and I consider it a bargain for what it is, with the same sensor used in the d3x and 5fps continuous, costing me £1200 s/h with only 500 actuations. Some of the lenses at the more normal focal length / aperture combinations that I have (85/1.4, 135/1.8) are a delight - just wish I had a bit more courage to use them for their intended purpose and post the results ...

As far as ISO performance is concerned Canon are starting to lag behind. Well if you believe DXOmark they are. All of the top APS-C SLRs use sensors made by.....you know who..

Who cares?
Nikon make the best camera equipment...

Canon... just don't...

...that is all...

Sony make the 16.2MP sensor that is in the new Nikon D7000 and Pentax K5 and getting the rave reviews.

Canon and Nikon make the best DSLRs (cropped and FF) which is why they have the duopoly. Professionals depend on their handling, build quality and reliability and the choice of quality lenses.

I used to have a Samsung GX20 (Pentax K20 clone) and it was a very nice camera until it got water in it a broke. Whilst I could use Pentax lenses I always felt I was missing out on the choice that Canikon have. I now have a s/h EOS 40D and it is a superior camera in nearly every way.

You usually get a lot more on paper for your money with Pentax/Sony/Olympus compared to Canikon, but the long term investment might not be as wise.

Something else to remember is that while some cameras may share the same hardware, the image-processing software will have subtle (or even not-so-subtle) differences, meaning that you'll not get the same image from different makes of camera even if they share the same sensor.

And they couldn't even make them look nice...:cuckoo::shrug:

Interesting. When I brought one home "just for a borrow" my wife said "oh, so they didn't bother making them look nice then...". But nobody else dares tell me it's ugly to my face. I just traded in a very nice car for less than my 'blad cost.

Strange that as I think the 500 series cameras are lovely looking (ha, I would say that I have two).

Am I the only one ever to wonder if Canon and Nikon actually come from the same parent company and are simply branded apart - like oh Gaymers Old English Cider and that Irish labelled stuff which turn out to be the same drink behind different labels?

After all, Ca non and Ni kon don't exactly sound like Japanese words do they?

what's that got to do with anything? haha ;) xD

& jeez! Is this thread still going?! I found my answer ages ago! I haven't read any of the posts after the 8th! xD

why start a thread if your not intrested in what people think, also i think theres no need to be so rude.:nono:

I didn't mean to be rude, it just came out like that.
& maybe because I had already 40 people's answers?
I would have thought that people would've realised that I had found my answer... without dragging it on for another couple of unnecessary pages. xD

Their respective parent companies or zaibatsu are different and in fierce competition...look it up...

Nikon belongs to the Mitsubishi Keiritsu (subsidiary-Zaibatsu)

Canon belongs to the Fuyo Keiritsu

When you start a conversation with 20 people in a pub, they don't stop talking after you walk off to the loo, do they?

Same thing here - Just because you start a thread, doesn't mean it's yours alone...it belongs to all of us once we get involved...

I am sorry. Like I said, I didn't want to sound rude.. it just came out like that. Slip of the tongue.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. I started this thread looking for an answer to my question that I started. I found my answer, didn't need any more. Extra answers wasn't really helping me, just made things confusing.
A man gets the game, twister, out at a party. Six people start to play it, which means the six people are involved.. but at the end of the day, the game belongs to the person who owns/started the game.

By that analogy the thread belongs to Matty and Marcel who own the train set. You merely suggested a game.

one thing to remeber is that old threads will always be brought up at some point as you may have your answer someone else might have a simular question or something to add to this, maybe if you dont want the thread to stay up ask a mod to close it.
and one thing to remember always is to be polite, theres some top people on here and its better to make good friend as they will help out.

Didn't think of it like that, good point.

But, I only said something because I didn't want people wasting their time posting answers that they think would help me. I found out earlier on in the thread that Canon and Nikon are the two main suppliers, but not necessarily the best. I should've stated that I'd found the answer and no more were needed. Sorry.

I honestly didn't mean to be rude, I can't stress that enough. It's just the way I phrased it. :bang: I feel like a right idiot now!:lol:
Oh well, you learn from your mistakes.
