Does anyone else have an appletv 3 from which they stream music via itunes match using the ipad 'remote' app and not from mac shared library for any length of time? I'm finding it is a bit hit and miss even though it is on an Ethernet connection rather than wireless.

I have noticed that the drop outs and crash seem to be around the time that the sleep function is set for. eg if it is set on sleep after 5 hours of inactivity it will roughly lock up on 5 hours. This is of course daft as it is actively streaming! I set it for 10 hours and I'm pretty sure it was working fine for a 10 hour period where it was being used on and off then suddenly it wasn't then it locked then crashed. Only way to get it back is to pull the power lead and let it restart.

There are also other people that think that the choice of screensaver can be critical in how it behaves.

Setting it to sleep 'never' and manually sending it to sleep seems like the only sensible next step unless there is an obvious other cause for it.

Looks like nobody then!

Appletv did an update so more features have appeared but sleep via holding the play/pause button on the silver remote has been disabled altogether. Grr. Just as I've set it to sleep never. Sigh.

I put Logmein on my ipad and it said to set the computer to never sleep.

That sounds like an idea.. Stream off the pc upstairs via logmein/iPad/AirPlay to atv

I specifically don't want to stream off computer upstairs. It bloats out Itunes and means it has to be on all the time.

It isn't the imac sleeping that is the issue. It is the apple tv. I want to set that to sleep when I've finished using it but the automatic sleep function seems to be causing the lock up ie it is locking up roughly around the point where the automatic sleep would kick in if it had started the timer from when I switched it on.

Still have random failures but now it plays a minute of a track then skips onto another which is even more annoying! New firmware and settings changes haven't helped. :(

Mine plays fine from imatch, i don't have sleep on though

I'm glad it works for someone at least :)

I turned sleep off the day before the update. It's made no difference. It works ok for a few hours then misbehaves. I did a reset with physical remote now sleep from physical play/pause button is working again. It's clearly buggy.

Who is your broadband provider? I wonder if it is a virgin media problem as there have been issues with peering partners over the last few months. It seems to barf just before 4pm, 9pm and just before midnight if it is going to.

If it is the same time each day, I would say the internet connection would be to fault.

I generally use mine from my PC, so not done extended use via imatch.

I use BT Fibre for my internet

It's on a 50MB connection so there is no excuse for it dropping out. That's plenty fast enough.

How stable is the connection? I've seen connections with high speed, but constantly dropping, so useless for streaming, voip or anything else requiring a constant connection.

The worst was with a company called Virgin Media. lol

It's usually ok. Bouts of packet loss seem to occur now and then. Usually when kids return to school after half term or students return to uni. Seems to be a massive spike in problems then it settles down.
