Yes
does anyone use an ipad to download, view etc pics from their camera, just considering buying one and wondered how useful it would be for my photography.

ipads are great. an expensive toy but nice
great for movies books games etc
but you can connect a card reader to them ,
there is a card reader adapter but i think its only for sd cards. and as far as i know you cant connect any other usb devive to them. although someone else may know differently

i have imported photos from an SD card into the iPad1

i didnt use the official apple camera connection kit, i bought a 3-1 adapter from hk (they are on ebay too i think) for about £13, basically you can plug an SD card, mini SD or USB into the ipad. I have only tried the SD import and it works great.

When u plug the sd card in the ipad detects it and then displays thumbnails of all the photos on the SD card, where u can either choose to import all or select individual photos to import. However it doesnt allow you to create different albums, everything gets imported to an "Imported" album.

I have used it to import jpegs only so need to test it out with RAW, and have not yet tried copying back from ipad to the computer, but i'd imagine that would be fine. Movies import but i cant find a way of playing them

Hope that helps!

For me, it's an essential tool rather than a toy.

I store my portfolio on the iPad so that I can show prospective clients my images without the need to lug books around. I generally have my iPad with me, so it works for opportunist occasions as well and has converted many such opportunities into jobs.

I use Easy Release for Model releases at sessions where necessary.

I shoot back to the iPad wirelessly when I'm covering corporate or hospitality events so that the images can be seen by clients immediately at full size.

And when I have down time on shoots, I use the Kindle app to read my book.

To me, because of the way I use it, it represents fantastic value for money. I bought it originally for the hospitality events thinking that I'd never use it for anything else, soon regretted not buying the 3G version.

I'll be buying another 3 very soon.

Just wondering if the app cost is one time cost or is there a need to pay more later? I remember that some time ago I found a similar app that charged for each release separately.

Yeah, i have the connection kit, its useful while traveling because you can off load all the images from the cards!

It's around £5 and there's no additional costs to pay.

can you do any photo editing on them? I was thinking of downloading pics onto it maybe do some editing then transfer my pics from the ipad to a portable hard drive, does that sound feasible. I would add that if i wanted to do any major pic editing i would download to my computer to do it

Filterstorm is quite good and seems to quite powerful editing app.

Thanks, thats good to know. Sounds like it would a good investment. :) Still gathering all the apps I want/need.

I plan to do the same, to preview the shots from the day while traveling. :)

Yep, its a great idea! Just make sure you leave room! Suppose you could delete movies that you have already watched if you do need more space!

hah yeah, I got the 32gb version. Its larger than the all CF cards I have together (25gb). But I only want to preview images, not download them on the ipad.

I posted a thread on this in the computers etc section a month or so back. I was especially interested in the Photosmith integration with Lightroom.

However, I was able to borrow an iPad for a bit and personally I didn't get on with it as a photography tool, as a general device it is great.

I have had the iPad 1 since they came out and as soon as I realised there was a camara coneecting cable I bought one. Since then the ability to download to the ipad straight away and crop images with 2 fingers has proved invaluble in my photography.

From what I understand with the apple camera connection kit you get two adaptors, one sd and one usb. You can plug a card reader into the usb or connect straight from camera. It will import your raw files and also duplicate them to jpeg so you can vie them straight away.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.

I wasnt aware that it did RAW, but i dont work in RAW so i have no idea to be honest!

I'm not a pro, so what it does is perfect for me!

It does take RAW files (canon at least as that is all I have experience of!) and does convert so that they can be viewed. A word of warning re: card readers though, they changed the power output of the USB adaptor in a recent iOS update and now it can't power most (if not all) card readers. It still works if you directly connect the camera though.

limited editing capabilities has kept out of the IPad store so far (in regards to the purpose you query) but for displying your portfoilo the screen is magic. Could be tempted sooner rather than later for this reason, Xoom (motorola) looks good too and runs android which is more microsoft friendly again an amaizing screen and slightly faster download transfer rate.

What about an Asus eee Slate, larger screen, upgradable, faster...only trouble its windows 7..

I'm seriously thinking of getting the Asus Eee Pad Transformer - the docking keyboard has USB and apparently supports card readers and external hard drives. This is with Android Honeycomb OS. There are a few photo management apps around but I haven't really investigated yet.

I have to confess I'm an Apple hater, and I'm that closed-minded I wouldn't touch an IPad unless my life depended on it :gag:

I always use the iPad to view digital photos, its screen is fantastic. The camera connection kit works flawlessly. I also use an Eye-Fi card with sd->cf adapter in my 5dii to shoot wirelessly for instant review. It's excellent. ShutterSnitch is set to receive a small (fine) jpg rather than the full RAW. Transfer takes about 5s per photo.

I shoot wirelessly to my ipad, but cannot find a SD>CF adaptor that works..
So only using it in compact so far...

Which adaptor do you use Trixster ???

Edit photos using Photogene, just basic corrections and crops then upload to dropbox or into saved photos folder for downloading via PC...

Consider if you really want to spend that much.
Battery life and weight are the only two things going for it - otherwise it's a lot of money for not that much - a VERY expensive mirror if you intend to use it outside :).

So far I've been pretty happy with my Acer 1825 PT laptop:

All the tablet functionality, but a full and quite powerful computer too. Battery life isn't as good and it weighs an extra kg - but then it's about as powerful as the desktop it was replacing!

yeah don`t really want another laptop, i`m considering the ipad for other reasons than just photography, in conjunction with work etc but just wondered how useful it would be for my photography. Can anyone give me more info on the wireless shooting. Cheers

I've got an eye-fi card I use for work stuff. You do need to be able to connect to a wireless network, but when in range and with the appropriate stuff set up it will download pictures to a location on the network or an internet site if desired. Not amazingly fast, but does the job well enough.
Google for eye fi for more info. I know my 60D has some specific stuff to work with them, but haven't tried to use it with that yet.

Not anymore. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/eye-fi-direct-mode-send-photos-direct-to-ipad/ The Direct mode looks like can make its own wifi connection.

It's the eye-fi card that does all the magic and this should with any device that can take SD cards.

Yes in the setup you can set it for working with router, so you can send photos to Pc or ipad. Also if no wireless available it works in direct mode to ipad....
Just switch on wireless on the ipad and search for the ssid of the eyefi card and load up the free app available from app store and away you go....

Bought my 4gb eyefi card x2 from costco around £40...

Bought a SD>CF adaptor from maplin but does not work with eyefi card...

my minds made up, i`ll get one as soon as i get the money together, i like the idea of the wireless download as well so will try to get that set up

I've been using that setup since it first came out using the camera connection kit. I only shoot in RAW and the D70 and now D7000 are both fine with it.

And when it comes to sync back, it just shows up as a DCIM folder so Aperture imports them nicely.

I wish there was an Aperture tool, at the very least for managing meta data, grouping, places, faces for the iPad as that would make it even better when on holiday or a weekend away as it would save me a little time coming back.

It's a great addition. Holidays are great, got my books on it, my magazines, a few games and can offload my images from my memory cards. Then like on my last trip, they wanted me to review a contract last minute, so on the plane, no paperwork annotate the PDF with my comments whilst reading a full A4 size page and send back to the office. The latter you can't even do on a laptop (full A4 at once), absolutely love it as a professional tool.

Get it :-)

Yeah that is my concern, I will end up with expensive card that is not working. :/

I'm bumping this thread to see how people are getting on with their camera to ipad connections.

I have a couple of Nikon D700s (CF) and I'd like to be able to shoot teathered to an ipad, either wired or wirelessly. Wireless souns nice, but I'd need a CF card in the camera to actually store the images (just send a small jpeg to the ipad), so I assume wired might do the job.

So can we connect our cameras straight to the ipad, either via the lead that comes with the camera (usb end) or another way? I've seen the Apple camera connection kit, so camera cable to the usb of that - is that just for copying files, or is it fast when teathered?

Thanks

I use my sandisk card reader plugged into the usb adaptor in the ipad and it works fine, problem is the limited amount of space available on them, 64gb less all the other software on them isn't that much these days

stonking screen for reviewing pics though

The screen really is that good. I used the iPad all the time on a recent bouldering trip to Font and a canyoning holiday in Corsica; at the end of the day the ability to transfer all the shots onto the iPad in a jiffy made it ideal for backup and superb to hand around to mates. Still highly recommended.

That's if you have the big one. I guess for you the 16gb would be a waste of time. If using it for email, web browsing, showing clients different styles, would you need much space? I actually have the 16gb model sitting here in its box (b'day pressie) and I want to be sure it's right for my needs.

Yes, that plus the nice usability for clients is great.

haven`t got the ipad yet spent my money on a macro lens but the ipad is definately my next buy hopefully soon as!!

I bought the iPad camera connecter, my camera uses an sd card so that was all I needed but the adaptor comes in two pieces, an sd reader and a USB connect straight to the camera.
