Aperture or Photoshop Elements?

I know these are completely different programmes, but let me try and explain why I am trying to decide between them.

I am new to digital photography, having previously spent a lot of time with film (but not in the last 10 year where work and kids meant it got pushed out). Now, having purchased a DSLR (Canon 500D) I am looking at what software I should use.

Being on a Mac I realise I can use iPhoto with Photoshop Elements as the external editor, and that would organise things pretty well. The other option to me is to buy Aperture instead. Looking at the videos on the Apple site it seems that the kind of basic editing I want to do can be done with Aperture, but that it sets me up with a better system for collecting and cataloguing my photos and that I could add a more comprehensive piece of editing software as an 'external editor' at a later date. It strikes me that the presets and simple brushes etc in Aperture are simpler to use than what Photoshop offers.

Is this reasonable thinking? Thanks so much for your help.

I moved to an IMac at the beginning of the year and found Aperture from the Apps store for £45, use it all the time now, quick brushes are easy to use, great results.

+1 for Aperture

Phil

I pretty much only use aperture now, barley touch photoshop. Aperture will pretty do everything you need, and for £45 its a good deal.

If you have iphoto now, just get aperture. You move your whole library over and start using it. Next to no learning curve for most things. Photoshop has a learning curve and while there are plenty of books and tutorials, I didn't find it intuitive. Aperture will be like Iphoto's big brother for you. Now that the price has dropped and is basically the same as elements, just get aperture.

Thanks
Rick

And another vote for Aperture. The brush in/out system with very good edge detection is so much easier and intuitive than faffing about with layers and lassos etc. Bet £45 spend on post processing.

Aperture again for me - It actually does a lot more than some people realise and is pretty intuitive.

I reckon it does 98% of what I need and now rarely use PSE

I am trialling Aperture myself after building a Hackintosh a fortnight ago. I was advised to buy Pixelmator whilst it is heavily discounted (£17.99 at the moment) but I must admit most of my photos are being edited solely within Aperture.

Why not download the 30 day trial yourself and give it a go?

I'm keeping an eye out for itunes gift card discounts so I can save a few £ when I buy the full version of Aperture.

Gimp? Thought it was designed for mac and is free... :D

But Looks like Aperture would be a good addition too :)

Gimp lol powerful yes but it breaks every ui standard on osx. Definitely not designed for it.
