As above really, I only shoot b&w so don't think I need the 7600. It must be better than my canoscan 9000f.

I have the older 7200, bought it when it was brand new out-as I was shooting film back then. Even though it was cheap by comparison to the nikon/canon film scanners, I have never been dissapointed with it-and havent seen a flatbed scanner to match it yet.

Thanks for that. I think it will be better but I just want to make sure before jumping.

This review may be useful to you:

http://www.filmscanner.info/en/PlustekOpticFilm7400.html

Its quite detailed (theres also one for the 7600i as well on the site) and basically it says that comes close to resolving 4000 dpi (about 3800 according to their test chart scan) but the catch is that you have to scan it at 7200dpi to actually get 3800dpi and then resize the scan if you don't want scans that are hugh and have no more real detail than scanning at 4000 dpi. (Of course though if you actually scan at that you get a drop in whats resolved so your forced to scan at 7200 dpi).

I'm looking at getting a 7600i if I ever have enough money as I shoot mostly colour at the moment so IR dust/scratch reduction is useful. Looking at other reviews on that website has me looking at Reflecta scanners as well for a similar price but they don't include Silverfast and an IT8 target like the 7600i Ai Studio version.... Choices, choices.....

Thanks for that, I will have a read up.

I have 7600i . well, but I haven't installed it properly yet as my laptop is acting up :D did read loads before I bought it so I'm fairly confident that it's a spectacular scanner although slow and no bunch scanning I think. can't wait to have a proper play with it .

I do have the 7400! Haven't used it much since shortly after buying it I had to move and I'm still finding my feet and all that, but the few negs I've scanned with it have left me feeling VERY impressed. I made my decision to buy it after reading this review, which lays out its good and bad points very nicely: http://www.filmscanner.info/en/PlustekOpticFilm7400.html . I certainly don't regret it! :)

Thanks all. I think I will see how the bank balance looks next month.

I actually remembered your thread! I do think that these have improved since then and as I would use vuescan with it the whole silverfast thing is negated. It's a very crap piece of software. However, a couple of places are reporting that the 7400 is discontinued and I know that plustek are due to release a new MF scanner, so I might wait to see what else appears and carry on with the carbuncle that is my 9000f at present.

I bought the Epson V500 in the end....

Does a strip of 6 35mm negs, slides, MF, photos up to A4 and the quality was at least as good in black and white and better in colour.

Thought about a Epson too, either the 700 or the 750 but I shoot 99.9% 35mm and the results I have seen with the plustek scanners have been better than any flatbed. It makes life very difficult, these types of decisions. Or at least a distraction from the grinding drudgery of everyday life! ;)

If you want to send me a strip of negs to scan I can do them at full quality as a test. Like I said I found the quality of the V500 better than the plustek and the V700/V750 should be even better.

I may well take you up on that! I will have a sort through for a suitable strip.
