Anyone know about buying big flatscreen tellies

I am off to sound and vision on saturday morning.... would be suprised if I come away empty handed so to speak.. Cheers:)

They can be rather heavy & come in a big box so make sure it'll fit in your car & you can get it out at home. ;)

Especially the 46" ones
;)

Just pick up a PS3 on the way home too, stick the HDMI lead in and a Blu ray and sit back and enjoy

Want to buy one but getting lost in bumf!

Looking at 40+ inch

Plasma or LCD ? I dunno..

Anywhere I could ask dedicated to this sorta thing?

What will you be watching mostly on the screen? For movies & games then I would plump for the LCD. For mainly sports then it would be a Plasma, due to the quicker response time.

Whatever you do don't just choose a product based on the price. I did this a while back with a 42" plasma. Cost me $1500 and I soon came to realise it was a waste of money. I should have spent the extra $500 on a decent screen instead of buying a bloody stand for the TV!!! I have now moved to a renowned LCD maker, Philips, and am more than happy with my 47" LCD over Plasma.

Really do your research thoroughly before buying, and as mentioned before AVForums is a great place to ask for advice.

I was caught out by the size of the box my plasma came in, and even more surprised by sound and vision not letting me have the screen that evening because I would have had to lie the screen down in the car to get it back to Chester.

That's a :nono: on the plasmas as the glass screen can crack with vibration if transported with the screen upper most.

One thing you need to remember is that a 50" plasma may not look all that big in your local hangar-sized branch of Currys, but it will look huge in your 10 x 12 living room

You soon get used to it though, my advice would be to go for a Panasonic Plasma, i've had 2 now and would buy another without hesitation, they also have a SD card slot in them so you get a massive HD picture frame to impress your parents with:D

If you're looking for a 40" and above you'll need a van if you want to pick it up tomorrow, I couldn't get a 42" Plasma in a Audi A6 avant in the box.

Our living room is not very large, and I suppose I'm at the biggest size I could comfortably fit in with my 40"....but I keep winding the Missus up by saying "I'm sure we've got an extra 3" spare each side of it love"...:lol::lol:
She would ****ing kill me :shake::shake::shake:

You do.
But you have to bear in mind how far away from the screen you are going to be sitting.
Depsite the advances in LCD and Plasma, if you are sitting too close to it the picture does look a bit naff.

I'd get an 80" and knock the back wall down if I were you Geezer
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

i was in currys today looking at the lcd and plasma tvs the plasma tvs looked very impressive and good prices plus my sis works there so i get 10% off

my parents got a 47 inch lcd and it looks good ( the living room is quite big) my uncle got a 50 inch and his living room is small and it is toooo big you seem to be right on top of the tv if you know what i mean

GULP!

Bought an LG 50" plasma

At the end of the day you cant beat trying one... measured how far away nearest seating would be and angles.. went to sound vision nr bolton... got him to put different things on as he was running a haryy potter dvd.. couldnt fault it in any way and bought it with an extra years warranty so 2 yrs with ability to update warranty after 2 yrs of course.

Arrives on thursday as we are decorating after weekend.. will take a pic of the front room and daft telly... i just cant get over what i ahve done... I am not into keeping up with technology and the telly just gone was old an knackered.. scarey stuff but I ahve a feeling the kids are gonna love us to bit this week at least hahaha

A 50 incher eh? :eek::eek::eek:

As my Missus said on our wedding night...."Gee that's a whopper!!"

Hope you enjoy it, the kids will love it.
Just don't let them get their grubby little paws all over the screen!!

Just a tip where that's concerned...
If you do need to give the screen a wipe over, just use a slightly damp soft (very soft) cloth. No chemicals or polishes, just warm water.
Will work a treat

LCD screens seem that bit brighter, whereas, plasma have better blacks. We opted for a 50inch 1080P Samsung plasma just in time for last chrimbo. Initially it looked huge despite being in quite a large room, but it's surprising how quickly you get used to the size - now we sometimes wish we'd have gone bigger. High def programmes are just stunning.

I'm guessing you took her to Burger King then :D

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::thumbs:

I remember the first time she ever saw me naked, and started giggling.
I said "what are you laughing at?"
"Who are you hoping to satisfy with that?" she replied....

"Me" I said

i have a 1080p capable 42" samsung plasma, plasma really is a better picture than the LCD, though the newed hi hz lcd are getting there. Personally i would look at the new panny with the freesat built in, HD goodness for around £800? stunning

Homecinemachoice website is much better now, the old one sucked, the new one is much better, good reviews etc on there.

Plasma's still rule i think (personally) at anything around 40+ in size. LCD's still suffer from bleeding picture juddering on fast action. My brother has a top end Sony 32 and it is pretty impresive, although wasnt upto my 42 LG plasma, although i have just replaced my LG as it was getting very hot, and was always slightly buzzing, not too much of an issue most of time, but got worse on poor signal feeds, namely ITV being worst. Too the point it was cutting out at times due to getting too hot. Heard lots of others complain about the same thing on a number of there models as they dont seem to fit fans on there processors.

Just got a new Panasonic th-42pz81b and boy it blows the LG to pieces, and most other TV's i have seen on display even on standard feeds watching ITV F1 and have never seen sure a good image HD is simply stunning.

LG make some nice stuff, but there quility control is pants, if you get a good unit you'l love it i am sure, but id be very carefull if you get a buzzing, i'd send it back, as it will begin to bug you after a few weeks. The Panny is completely quiet, even though it has about 4 fans in the top of it.

is that the model with the HD tuner for freesat built in? Get a BD player, sony or panasonic models to be had for £300 or less now, you wont regret it!

Yeah it is, simply stunning performer. Havent tested the HD freesat though as i am currently running Sky HD, havent got around to playing with any setting yet either.

rumour has it Bernie might get F1 shown in HD next year.

Sky HD has a load of new channels coming soon too...

F1 will have to be HD to be able to keep up as theres soo many other sports already doing, cycling, MotoGP, World Superbikes all have HD broadcasts

mostly more movie channels though, unless you're into sport I don't think it's worth £10 a month to watch a few TV series in HD, I still have the HD box for BBC HD and C4 HD but won't be giving sky any of my money until they drop the £10 charge like they did for sky+

Hmmm telly arrived OK .. got it all setup... not all that impressed ATM :(

Very eeerm contrasty and sharp is the way i would describe it... over exposed? I have tried diff modes but all looks very odd.

when in shop guy tried to sell me a 50 quid scart lead cus its gold and more pins... would that make a world of difference and can ya gerrum less than 50 quid?

My dad wasn't for changing the scart lead on his Panasonic, but I went out and bought him a decent set (with the gold plating) and it made a marked difference to the picture quality. I certainly didn't pay 50 quid for them though, I think it was more like £25...

The usual suspects (And by that I mean DSG) charge SO far over the odds for cables it's a joke!

I don't care if it's gold plated as I'm only going to plug it in ONCE (and thus don't care if the connection might oxidise when not plugged in), what I care about is the shielding on the cable itself. Oh and don't get me started on HDMI cables costing the earth... it's a digital signal!!!

Just ask the sales guy which he thinks is the better conductor, silver or gold?.... case closed!

It's the same business model as Jessops have, cut the prices of the main purchase and then ramp up the margins on the accessories in the hope that the buyer will pay the infalated prices so that they ahve all the kit ready to go when they get home.

What I noticed with the Panasonic leads wasn't so much whether they were plated or not but rather that they were a poor fit and very cheaply made. Replacing them with a decent set of regular cables may have made an equally noticeable improvement in picture quality...

I've got an HDMI lead going from my PS3 to my amp.
Another one goes from the 360 to the amp.
One HDMI lead then goes from the amp to the LCD.
I get brilliant picture quality.
The one thing all three HDMI leads have in common?

They each cost £9.50 from ASDA
:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Somewhere in your TV's menu you will have additional settings.
You've just got to go searching.
You would have needed a welders mask to watch anything on my Samsung when I first got it....you've got to have a play
;)

Sorry, my comment was supposed to be funny... you won't find silver connects (although you will find silver cable at several hundred pounds per foot). Don't worry about the gold connector, copper is actually a better conductor but oxidises over time. Thus if you leave it unplugged you may find the connection isn't so great when you do come to plug it in.

What you need to look for are individually screened cables, meaning that each cable in the scart is shielded and then the whole thing has a shield applied to it.

Chances are you'll also get gold connectors with such a cable, just don't be fooled into the the "logic" that a £50 cable will give you a much better picture. It won't whereas a screened cable will make the world of difference.

Am I the only one that's a bit bemused by the number of people on a photography forum that have a runway sized TV?

If you can't see an ordinary sized box, how the hell do you cope with a viewfinder? :D:D

Well, the Mrs kept telling me bigger was better so when it came to buying a new TV, who was I to argue?

Its me not you mate.. I am really clueless opn all this... this shouldnt bar me from having a decent telly though hehe :) Right now I ahve a scart lead from the skybox to the telly.. the scart is plastic and has 20 pins... tight fit but looks cheap

Something like this:

Would be more than up to the job. You can normally tell a quality scart by the thickness of the cable (hence its shielding).

Thats pretty normal for LG tbh, you need to set one of the user defined settings, first set the contrast for the white leves, then Brightness level to control the blacks, Sharpness as required.
