Anyone getting an iPad?

I also know a number of people in the IT industry who aren't to keen on them.

My main work is as Lead Software Developer for one of the UK's largest mobile networks, and deal with alot of IT companies every day and know just as many Mac users as Windows, on the desk I am sat at now there are 5 Mac Books and 6 Windows desktops. For the design industry (whether Photoshop, Or 3D design, Maya, Lightwave etc) I believe OSX is just as popular as Windows.

I think you will always get Fanboys and haters. I sit somewhere in the middle with a slight leaning towards Apple, and 9 out of 10 times you'll find that people who dislike an Apple product do so without using one, and do it to be objective.

Also alot of Mac Fanboys have alot of hate for Windows and Microsoft thats wholely unjustified most of the time.

Apple products are normally very well built and reliable, and with OSX roots in the *nix pool its my OS of choice. But then alot of other machines are similarly well built, and although I have had more issue with standard laptops and tablet PC's (Acer in particular) I still own Windows machines and one of my two Mac Books is dual booted between windows and OSX. It really is a personal taste situation.

I almost succumbed to buying an Ipod, but instead opted to buy a Zen - sure it doesnt have the same memory as an Ipod but my music is safe, has never been deleted and I can copy it from PC to Zen and back to another PC without demands from over protective DRM software. In addition to this my Zen has never gone wrong, whilst everyone around me who owns or has owned an Ipod has found it dead after owning it for 370 days.

You do know that

a) an iPod can play the same MP3s you (presumably) have on your Zen with no restrictions?

b) DRM never stopped you copying music files. It never stopped you copying and playing those MP3s or m4a/AAC files that you ripped from your own CDs?

c) DRM only ever applied to songs that were purchased as downloads from the iTunes Music Store in m4p format, at the insistence of the record labels (indeed Steve Jobs published an article arguing against DRM in February 2007)?

d) Apple dropped DRM on some music purchased from the iTunes Music Store in May 2007 and on all music in January 2009 after reaching an agreement with the aforementioned record labels?

I have no argument with your choice of a Zen, but it's worthwhile making the choice on the basis of genuine information, not misinformation.

FWIW, I've had my 80 GB iPod Classic for nearly three years now and (touch wood) it still works perfectly well.

My rationale behind avoiding anything Apple is perhaps best explained by my preferred description as "tat" - Apple products are just so unreliable.

I am on my 2nd ipod, as is my wife - no issues.

Laptop and imac fine, iphones fine. Only issue was at around 8 months I noticed my iphone having some dust behind the screen. 10 mins after showing it to apple store, they swapped it for a new one!

My work laptop windows is a pain in the bottom! My imac or macbook has less crashes/freezes/annoying issues in a year, than the windows laptop has in a week!

Maybe its what you do with them that causes you to have problems!

BUt like I said - the Ipad does look cool and I would seriously reconsider my standpoint if the price dropped.

thats irony right.

No, no metals involved - but apples are a good source of Vitamin C ;) :coat:

They are? Yet you haven't owned or used one for 25 years.

So far here:

3 iMacs. 5 iPods of various flavours. 1 Macbook. 1 Macbook Pro. 2 iPhones. 1 iPad.

Not one problem with any of them.

Dell laptop - died
HP desktop - died
Compaq laptop - died

Well I wasnt waving a flag for Dell, HP or Compaq in my post either

Many of my friends own ipods, perhaps it was a bad batch sent to Pompey... but they have ALL gone back or been thrown in the bin. A couple were foolish enough to buy another ipod, but others have turned to alternatives like the Zen or the Archos.

Great that you have had no problems with so many Apple devices, but I do wonder if that is a statistical anomaly.

To the other poster who mentioned DRM - I am happy to stand corrected, as I do rip direct from my cd's. However my sister and her husband have had had files deleted from their hard drives through itunes syncing with their ipod - and have lost a lot of £'s worth of music downloads. I think they have given up now.

If you lose songs you have purchased in iTunes all you have to do is email CS and they will re add them to your downloads list.

I would also say the experience of RH is not a statistical anomaly. I have had plenty of apple products and plenty of friends who have them and never had problems.

When they came out I said I wouldn't get or need one as I have an iPhone and a MBP. Since then though I've seen them in action and played with one myself and I have to say, I really want one now. Perfect for showing potential client's your portfolio, excellent for keeping the kids amused with video when out and about in the car, on a plane etc as far less bulky than the MBP.

I'm looking for an iMac as well so may sell the MBP and buy an iMac and iPad.

Had to resist buying one today, fiance gave me the green light to allow me to buy one for my birthday next week.
If it were not for the price I would be typing this on an iPad now.

i would say you and your friends are more the statistical anomolys because for all of apple products faults, reliability is not one of them. i still have 2 ipod minis from 6 years ago, both work perfectly and even keep a decent battery life.

my macbook is the best example, 2 years ago my wife spilt an entire pint of orange juice on the keyboard. it fizzed and turned off, i pulled it apart and cleaned it up but got nothing from it. a week later it turned on and started working. i sent it off to have the topcase replaced where the keyboard is, now it still works as good as it ever did.

May be selling my imac if you were after an older model.

This is what I have been thinking. At first I just viewed it as some gadget apple have made as a spin off from the iPhone sucess. But I can see the merit in having something small, that isn't a laptop, that can be used to surf the internet whilst round the house....

Really, that has absolutely b****r all to do with Apple. Every laptop has the same PCBs, power supplies, ribbon cables etc underneath. Sometimes you'll get lucky if you spill liquids on them and you can just dry them out, sometimes you won't.

On the original point though, my original 5GB iPod's hard disk did die, but I've not had any problems with any other Apple kit. I've certainly never see any hard evidence that Apple products are more prone to failure than any other brand.

can someone answer the following for me...

Can I import raw files from a canon camera onto an ipad and then view them... ideally then could i get iphoto for it or canons own dpp software on it... or is there a raw viewer app etc etc...

I really want one but if I cant look at raw files on it ... its not for me!

Yes, it's all native, no extra software required. Works with both the 5DMkii and 7d (and all the rest I dare say).

EDIT: You do need to buy the camera connection kit though (£25).

Do you know how to do a batch delete on the iPad ? , if I import/view say 100 shots I've got to delete them one-by-one or hook it up to my PC

The only way to block delete is by pressing the button in the top right of the screen while viewing the thumbnails, then selecting all the images you want to delete (by ticking one at a time) then hit the delete button.

It's not as much of a ball ache as it sounds because you can tick each one VERY quickly.

When you've imported 12Gb from a card it gives you RSI

and what is with Apple giving the photo folders random names, can't they use day/date like normal people :bang:

People spend about £300 on a budget windows machine and end up being unhappy with it saying that MACs are much better. Well, how expensive is the cheapest MAC system? Spend THAT ammount on a PC and the PC haters will find that they can get a lot more than they realise with a PC.

I use both and like/hate both in equal measure.

If you want to delete 100's of photos then plug it in - remember it's not supposed to replace a computer!

What random names are you talking about. If iPhoto auto names an event it's usually with the date the images were taken (at least on my systems!).

It's not a computer but it'd be usefull if it was a practical photo viewer...

When I plug the iPad into my PC the folders within the DCIM directory have random multi-letter names

Just a quickie - what app(s) are folks using for editing? Photogene seems reasonable, but I suspect there may be a few that cover different things.

Also, Apple store online says 2-3 weeks for delivery of camera connection kit. However, I ordered one on Monday and got it today, so supply doesn't seem quite as constrained as most places/people would have you believe. They're probably just not making it through to the stores in any great quantity for some reason. So, please don't buy one from some pleb on eBay for £50, which is what people seem to be asking for them.

ah, good to know the order times are quicker

I will order one in the coming days

Yep, website order to doormat in approx 1 week - Apple site said 2-3 weeks.

Am using Photogene - seems ok for the basic edits you'd want to do on the iPad

9 out of 10 times you'll find that people who dislike an Apple product do so without using one.

xcode drove me nuts. ObjC didn't help. In the end I wiped osx from my mac mini, installed Windows 7 and gave up on the idea of writing applications for my iphone. It now sits next to my TV and hifi and works as a media PC, because it is small and quiet.

I don't like apple's distribution method for iphone applications but I really don't like the fact that I have to pay them to upload applications that I write onto my telephone to test them and that the test programs I wrote and installed on my telephone no longer work now that my developer subscription has expired.

Don't see how anyone can be a fan of that much control.
