Anyone else use 500px?

Just joined too, also being blown away by the standard of photography. But the best thing is that I've had a browse around, and nowhere have I seen any gold stars, badges, or copy-and-pasted congratulations messages that litter flickr :D

Hopefully that won't change as the user base expands, as it's really impressive at the moment.

Indeed, that is a refreshing change. But what’s not changed is the “nice pic” comments. Iv given up already :shake:

Thought I'd post this in case someone else experiences it too.

I was a bit confused why the rating was dropping on a photo of mine despite the votes on it not changing, but having read up it's intentional and it's part of how their ratings system works.
Dev blog post about it here.

Had a proper poke about, and added a few people on here, the quality of the photos is astounding! Makes me look positively crap lol.

I think it will grow to be a rival of Flickr tbh, seems to have a lot more going for it, and the voting system is a good judge of people liking things.

So is anyone actually commenting and voting? I am enjoying looking around and commenting on others work! :)

If it were as simple as that it would be fine. The weighting given to dislikes is inordinately large in my opinion. I seem to have picked up a couple of folk who dislike everything I do which drops the pictures way down. For example yesterdays upload got a dislike within 10 minutes which knocked it back down quite a long way - it then got published in one of those editor choices things and hey presto another dislike and back down another few points. If someone had to give a reason for the dislike that would be fine. I only started this last year so any critique is fine by me.

Last five or six have all been the same. The instant they get high up they get knocked back. Not on the timescale thing either. I have a large number of folk following me who have no pictures to display. For a picture sharing site I can't work that one out either. It shouldn't annoy me but it does. Back to Flickr for me.

Once a day, after I've replied to any comments on my photos and checked to see if anyone has thrown any Affection my way, I check the pictures in my Friends section, voting and commenting on the ones I like. Then I go through Fresh, Upcoming, Favorites and Popular doing the same. Can't guarantee to have time do this every day but it feels good to support others' work in this way.

Just had a look, signed up and tried to upload a pic.

The uploader isn't working. Looking at the help page, it seems everyone's having the same problem.

Not a good first impression sadly.

I've signed up to 500px as well, although my photographs are way way way below the standard that's on display on 500px!

But what a place to to browse, and learn!

I'll be uploading only my absolute favourite photo's (although they're not necesarrily any good technically!) this evening.

500px has become my new favourite source of inspiration. I spend half an hour every evening just trawling through...
I always find something fantastic to inspire me. It's also helped me to become a bit more picky and up my own standards too. Great site.

Having had a good poke around 500px last night I must say I'm really liking it. It makes a nice change from Flickr and I can see the benefits of having accounts on both sites.

I'll be more selective about what I upload on 500px so it'll take a while to build my site up, as i'm very harsh on my own photo's (because I'm rubbish! haha!)

And if you guys don't mind, I'll gradually add people from TP to my following list.

Couple of questions..

Is there a way to enable purchasing from your portfolio? Is this a 'premium' function?

Is there any option for geotagging your pictures, so others can see where they were shot (I find this very useful for scouting locations based on other peoples pictures).

Thanks,
Sam

Oddly I was reading your review just before posting my questions above... :)

That's a very nice thing you're doing Will.

I still can't seem to 'like' any images without having a link to a social network site. I had a reply when I asked saying it was for security reasons, but I think uploading an avatar image is beyond any spammer and their automated software, but there you go. They said they would try and sort it out but I haven't heard anything back.

There are many images that I would like to like, but I can't.

Have you validated your email or uploaded a photograph? I think this allows you to like things. It's to stop the trollers which were consistently disliking pictures.

500px's customer service is excellent I have found, despite the bugs, so you should hear a reply soon I think. :)

Yes, I've validated my email address, uploaded an avatar, and uploaded images, but you also 'need' to have a connection to a social networking site, which I don't think you should 'need' to do if you don't want to. I could set up a dummy connection but I don't want to, and shouldn't have to, as it is quite obvious from validating an email and uploading avatars an images that I am not a 'bot'.

One of the mods there said she would have a word with their tech people to see if they could get around it, but I haven't heard back, so I assume it wasn't possible. I can't be the only person in this position though.

It's not a big thing though. Doesn't stop me commenting, only 'liking' and 'disliking'.

That must be a new thing. If you connect and then disconnect with Facebook that should be ok?
