just wondered if anyone on the forum is into RC cars

I have a few mates that race RC cars in various club formats. I tried it myself once and decided it was not for me and found myself another equally expensive hobby... photography.

Be good to see some shots of this in action though. HPI Racing do some pretty crazy fuel and battery cars.

You big kid :) Is it a petrol or nitro jobby? Or have you bought shares in Duracell too? :D

its a 4.6 cc nitro engine with 2.9hp, meant to do around 45mph which is quite impressive for such a large truck with 4wd

i used to have a schumacher XTR3e which i spent far too much money on, that was claimed to do 70mph! but everytime i drove it i broke it :(
im hoping i should have alot more fun with this one

heres a vid of the savage in action

I've raced rc cars in one form or another for the last 10 years :)

Not really into racing RC cars but I have four (yes four) Tamiya BTCC Mondeos. Would be shelf queens, but they are all packed away in their boxes. I also have two spare unpainted Tamiya Mondeo bodyshells and another 20 unpainted Mondeo Bodyshells of which make I have no idea. (Yes I do like Mondeos) :)

Sorry but IMO its on par with Train sets in the loft and kite flying

I have a Hyper 8.5 with a Cobra .21 in it, which is R A P I D!

Only really use it for fun though, never raced it, and havent really used it for a while....

Might whack it on Ebay with all the kit, see if I can get some cash for it...

I got a losi XX Kinwald Edition lying around here somewhere!

Also got:
Tamiya TRF 501x Worlds Edition
Koyosho ZX5-SP
Associated RC10L
Xray T2'007 EU Edition

I tend to only keep the cars I actively race then the occasional other model which I have a particular liking for. The RC10L i've had up to around 70-80mph, I wanna make a push for the 100 barrier sometime next year when I can afford the bigger speedo to run 14.8v instead of 7.4!

you;ve clearly never seen proper kitesports then.

I have which is why I quoted kite flying (a reference to the kind of thing I do with my 5 year old daughter) and not kitesports (power kiting, buggying etc).

I brought a secondhand Savage for my son last Xmas

Stripped it down and rebuilt it to this

He never really liked using it as it was so loud though, ended up getting rid of it and getting an E-Savage instead

There is the same difference in the sorta rc car you buy a child for christmas and the sort that is seriously raced.

I know that too, they hold a meeting locally where my lad plays football and it always makes me chuckle seeing grown men battling it out against the youngsters in these races.

Each to their own I suppose, I get slated by a bloke at work for my photography interest, he is into cycling which doesn't interest me one bit.

If we were all the same the world would be a bit boring, especially if we were all into RC Cars ;)

Oh and this is only a bit of light hearted banter

tbh i get understand your point there, when i was a kid i used to race R/C cars, i got to a position in the club where id progressed to a point where i needed to spend some serious money just to keep up with the adults spending hundreds of pounds a week when i was only on a measly £5 a week pocket money, it was a bit gauling when you realise you cant actually do any better with the gear you;ve got because your competing against people who can afford better gear.

but heyho, each to his own, pete waterman still plays with trains, i do a bit of kiting, these blokes play with toycars, hell some people even collect stamps!

The past few years has actually seen quite a swing and it's no longer nessecary to 'buy' lap times to keep up with the front runners, at least not in off-road. You can get plastic kits that are everybit as quick as the top spec kit. Your thumbs mean a lot more than your kit .

The european championship this year was won by a car which was a prototype of an entry level car. The car can be bought for about £150ish compared to the high level kits at £350-450. Lipo and brushless has also started to help mean that the top guys at the club and the bottom guys are all running the same equipment.

That would be great, think of the events and competitions you could run!

when i used to race you either had to have a losiXX or an RC-10 to be in the top flight, and then losi brought out the XXX and everyone was screwed, plus you had to add matched batteries (i used to build my own battery packs from individual cells to keep costs down), expensive servos and of course pricey motors and it was just priced too far out of the reach of 'children' and more into the relms of big boys toys. im glad its changed though.

anyone want to buy an ex world team losiXX? graphite and carbon bits ahoy! its fairly scruffy but last time it was used it all worked! :woot: maybe i should just buy a new motor and get it working again!

I have a massive Thunder Tiger MTA4, very similar to yours here I believe. Goes like the wind, although, only use in the Summer. Needs a service. I have a few others too.

Awesome toys.

Gary.

I've got loads of XX spares new in their packet, i which i could get the retail price for them :'(. I got them for a restoration project on my XX KE then decided it wasn't really worth it.

wow! never realised so many *** had them on here,

my steering servo broke xmas day :( so im a tad gutted about that,

im going to try and get it replaced under warentee
im going to teach my wife how to drive it so i can get some photos of it,

wish me luck, shes never used any type of rc vehicles before!

do you have a servo saver fitted on the servo? i ask because any force applied to the wheels in an accident can strip the teeth from the reduction gears in the servo leading to many breakages, a servo saver will prevent this happening.

It can be quite good to replace the steering servo with something with more power in those larger cars anyway those big heavy wheels require a lot of torque to move!

some years ago we raced 10th scale electric buggies and a tenth scale truck.
loads of fun. i even used to beat my kids occasionaly.
theyre all lurking in a wardrobe somewhere.
even had a porsche 911 body on the truck at one point.
but they started to get a bit expensive to be competitive.
hi power batteries and controlers.fast servo,s .
modified motors and carbon fibre parts.
and as my kids lost interest, it was more difficult to go on my own.
we raced mainly indoors on carpet.
sponges and very low suspension.
loads of fun.

ive got a failsafe, thats not the same though is it?

im going to get a metal geared servo made by hitec , should do the job, seems to have good reviews on the savage forum.

Your failsafe cuts the throttle incase the radio loses signal (very important as otherwise the throttle stays in the position it was the last time it reached signal, so you could be left with a truck driving away from you flat out!)

The hitec metal geared servo's are what a lot of people around here run in the larger cars. I use a Hitec 5925 myself in my buggy which has massive amounts of torque although probably would be a bit out of your price range. Even the Hitec 625MG would be a step up and you would notice that it should be a bit faster and not bog down anywhere near as much as a standard servo.
