After a discussion on the Talk Equipment sub forum, it was recommended i ask a similar question over here

Long story short, i am looking at upgrading my D300 to a FF Nikon, and the 2 options i have at the moment are the older D700, and the newer D600/610, it was mentioned however that the D600 does not have as good an AF system as the pro spec D700, and this could be a disadvantage for wildlife shooting

So really i am asking if anyone on here shoots with a D600 and has ever had issues with the AF system

Also, while i've got you here, are there any D700 shooters, and how do you manage with potentially severe cropping on the 'relatively low' 12MP count of the D700 (the main thing putting me off the older D700)

Cheers

Owned and shot with both professionally, the AF on the D600 is woeful compared to the D700, i dont shoot wildlife but shoot field sports and i would never pick up another D600 ever again if quick and accurate AF was required.

Now im not saying the AF on the D600 is rubbish all tigether, its just rubbish when compared to a D700

Just my 2 cents worth

NOT a bird photographer in particular but do shoot motorsport from time to time using a D700 (and 800 but I understand that's out of budget anyway). The D700's AF is fine for picking up and following cars and bikes at 100MPH+ so should be able to follow most birds (as long as you can keep your aim accurate!). Not used a D600 (or 610) other than a quick fondle before deciding the D800 was worth the extra to me but understand that its AF is inferior to the D700 and D800. As for cropping into D700 images, how far do you want to go? I've done A3 prints from my old D70 (6MP) that look fine at normal viewing distance - might be a bit pixelated in the hand but they're fine on the wall! Images from the D700 are (as you'd expect) much better at full res and cope well with fairly serious cropping, although (IMO) the D800's extra pixies allow heavier crops. If you don't plan on printing heavy crops at big sizes, the D700 should be fine for you. If you'd like a D700 full res JPEG to play with, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you one. Only with a 70-300 VR (unless I can persuade a fellow member to let me play with his 600!) but it'll give you some idea of croppability.

The D700 is fine for wildlife stuff, AF is excellent and high ISO is good.

Never used a D600 so cannot comment on that.

At the moment I too am looking at a D700 for wildlife. I'm looking at upgrading to it from a d7000 for full frame sensor and the extra stop of ISO. Im definitely thinking of the d700 over the d600, the old technology or smaller sensor is not really a problem compared to fast AF.

Well I have taken the plunge and bought myself a D700, should be here in a couple of days

Got the D700 and the D300. Used the 700 for many things the last few years but not wildlife until about a year ago, dont use the D300 now. For reach i use a 600mm lens and convertors which keep cropping to a minimum. Will upgrade the D300 shortly to a D800 but need to get a few wildlife trips out the way and paid for first
