Any Astrophotographers on here??? ......

Saw it but didn't snap it. Got up early to try to find ISON but crescent moon and dawn light made that too hard so went back to sleep!

Done a bit of astro...but nope I haven't seen Mars.

Jupiter is much brighter and visible for most of the night, Mars is visible from about 2am onwards but is much smaller as well so photographing it with my kit would just render a bright star shaped object with no details so I haven't really bothered.

Yeah i agree HINT HINT ADMIN an Astronomy Section please ...,... If you get a chance!!

Im jsut getting in to it my self aswell this its quite amazing what an SLR Camera and 300mm lens can capture out there!!

Been looking at buying an automated telescope to look at things in abit better detail as well

I have a canon 550d and a sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 lens, Would it be possible to capture any planets with this lens? I would love to capture some photos of planets but wouldnt have the first clue where to start looking for them apart from looking up to the night sky that is!

I've just finished making a barn door tracker which you can track the rotation of the stars, therefore using longer exposures
http://www.psychohistorian.org/display_article.php?id=201303261529_barn-door.content .
but due to the weather have'nt had a chance to try it out, also a lot of people say use a 2.8 lens or something like but if you look at this you can try different lenes http://www.astropix.com/HTML/I_ASTROP/LENSES.HTM

I'd like to get into astro photography, I've always wanted to go out and get some nice pictures. I should be getting a 16-35 2.8 II in the next few days. Would the use of this barn door tracker remove streaks/trails? Allowing for a "milky way" or nebula type of shot?

yes you can exposure your shots for as long as you want, have a look at the psychohistorian link above there are some images at the bottom of the page the only streak you should get is satellites you also need a program called deep sky stacker or similar which is free so you can stack multiple exposures eg 14 shots at 2 min exposures, once you have done this there's another bit where you take dark, light & bais shots so overall you will get 56 shots to stack but that later after you've donr the first bit

It would be fab to see an astro section on here, but it's been asked a couple of times up in Admin towers with no luck so far. Perhaps there's a few more of us here to make it a worthwhile section. At the very least it would be nice if we could have a go at making it work!

Cummon guys and gals :jaffa::jaffa: ............. Please!!! Don't get me begging, it's not a pretty sight

I've been thinking if giving it a bash this winter also so would be great if we could get our section with beginners guides and tips etc.

I think we need to start posting some astro shots or attempts of, to attract the powers that be to start a astro photography section, trouble is the weather is crap at the moment so no chance for me supposed to be going colder & dryer within the next week so maybe then I can get out

I spotted something really bright, in the eastern sky at around midnight when going to bed the other day, I've been wanting to have a go at shooting it, but it's been cloudy ever since. Anyone know what it may be.

It should be pointed out that the Polar Alignment instructions in the above link are for the Southern Hemisphere. The South Celestial Pole lies in a fairly barren area of sky making PA more difficult. Northern Hemisphere observers are better served as the NCP lies very close to the pole star Polaris.

here's the other site http://www.clarkvision.com/articles/barn.door.tracking.mount/ and this is how you find it

I don't spend much time on the planets, but concentrate more on the deep sky stuff.
I too would like to see an Astronomy section

I would love to see an astronomy section of the forum as well. I'm in the same boat as Astro I like deep sky stuff not so much the planets

Should be an astro section, think most people will be jealous of swag72 though:notworthy:.
Only ever tried astro stuff a few times and would love to have a decent set-up for doing this sort of photography.
It's amazing what you can see when you have a good look up on a clear night away from light polution!

LOL but we do like to see a bit of sucking up from time to time.
As you said Sara, the question has been asked a couple of times
and it was discussed in the staff room too, but unfortunately,
there just isn't the demand for it.

Why not start a thread, for everyone to post their astro shots in, in one of the other photo sharing forums?

I would love to see an astro section as well.....it is something I really want to have a go at! I've had an Orion Europa 150 for a 2 or 3 years and not really used it much so I want to find out how to use it (if possible) with a camera. Some 'how to...' tutorials would be great! :)

Not one of my best but........
It is a Pentax *ist DS with a kit 18-55mm lens @18mm. Tripod mounted and 30s exposure at ISO 3200. Comet McNaught setting behind the Awhitu Peninsula, Auckland NZ December 2007.

I too would be very interested. My son is at Uni doing astrophysics and he has left his telescope here. It would be great if I could learn a bit whilst he's away. To be able to regularly email some of my shots to him would be great! :)

VERY AWESOME moon picture. The colour and detail is fantastic.
Nice shot  ...how did you take it through the eyepiece? Did you just hold the camera there or did you use something like this http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00664J668/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AC0Z9SY209HFV

Thanks guys, I just held the camera to the eyepiece. Didn't use any attachments or brackets. If I remember right it was a 2" eyepiece and I took several shots and stitched them together in photoshop as the moon was just slightly larger than the field of view of the eyepiece.

Thanks, it had a very little bit of sharpening
