Another One Bites the Dust, Blockbusters goes into Administration

I thought it went under years ago! Talk about a business model not moving with the times!

Ouch, that's one of the few places in the town I still use to rent DVDs and Blu Rays. That's a bit of a blow for me because what I get from there will have subtitles on them (as I'm hard of hearing) - something that isn't available with downloadable content from Netflix and Love Film.

I never realised downloads never had subtitles, that is a poor show :(

The other big problem is i don't want to be forced to pay £xx every month to use these download services, if i want to see a movie i could go to blockbuster and rent it, then not watch another for a couple of months maybe and it doesn't cost me money to not watch a film

And i'm sure most of these subscription services rely on a lot of people signing up and either forgetting/not using the service to its full potential to actually remain profitable

There are online models that still use the pay per movie service though. AppleTv for example

Ahh, never heard of Apple Tv, only ones i know of are the Netflix, Lovefilm type ones

Playstation store has something similar, you can just buy films individually

AppleTv just uses the iTunes store, which I'm sure you have heard of.

I just thought iTunes was for music, do you need to buy one of those AppleTv boxes though at £99 to use it though

Amazons Lovefilm and Youtube both do one off rentals, neither has a very up to date catalogue though.

That was going to be my other point, my brother had one of those free trial things over Xmas for Lovefilm or who ever, but said most of the stuff available had already been shown on telly

The whole point used to be (5-10 years ago at least) that Blockbuster would have rentals available weeks/months in advance of DVD's available to buy, so movie rental was the only way to see new films

Is this now not the case?

wont be worth going into town soon
We have or had a Blockbusters as well as HMV and Jessops in Wrexham:shake:

no itunes for movies, tv shows too. You can watch them on your ipad, iphone or computer too. DOesnt have to be through appleTv

Yep I do this too after having been on lovefilm for ages. At least with BB, you go there on the day you want to watch the film and get the one you actually want(usually).

The disadvantage with BB is that you then have to go back there the next day to drop the ruddy thing off. Collect on foot, return by post they should have introduced.
Hope they dont go under just yet, want to rent Dredd and Lawless this weekend.

The online idea is all well and good but I just cannot stand the whole white circle of death every few minutes because the internet connection is carp.

But I'd much rather watch films on my 40 ins LCD TV in my hobby room with separate speakers blasting out the sound to get that "home cinema" feel on a Saturday evening, not on a silly little portable device with their tinny speakers (which I can't hear what with my deafness).
Spending two hours crouching over a small device straining to see the screen and listen to the speakers would detract from that home cinema feel.

I can understand that. I have a 50 inch one and thats how i watch mine through iTunes.

Either through AppleTv or connect your iDevice or macbook to it. No need to crouch over it or listen to tinny sound

I buy Blu ray and never downlode..

Are downlodes good enough for Home cinema on large projector? THX sound as well?

2 of my fave shops going... HMV and now Blockbuster.

sorry but I'm not a fan of buying online even though I love my hi tech stuff.

High streets are full cheapo Kack like pound shops and Charity shops.... Who the hell wants 2nd hand clothes that some one may have died in?

Technology is turning humans into not going out couch patatoes.......

Its getting bad here. Our town centre is starting to sport more closed shops than open ones. The council Are trying to pour more money into it, but its a hard time to open a business, especially at the rates our council charge. We also used to have a huge open market that filled a carpark. Its now 4 stalls all owned by the same indian guy.

I used to rent blu rays from blockbuster at around £3.50 a time but for the last few years I've been with Lovefilm , I get approximately 8 movies a month for £10 @£1.25 per movie, Dredd and lawless were delivered this week their cinema release was 6 months ago. Downloads no good here as at best I can only get 2mbps. I found blockbuster pre owned blu ray cost more than you could buy new online.
They will not be missed by me.

Welcome to Blighty. Visit the land of shop keepers.... I mean charity shops... C r a p for under a pound shops No pubs and Hairdressers everywhere...... Want to know what Serbia looked like in the 90's? Welcome to the British highstreet.

Is technology just making every one a lazy git?

I collect movies have over 400... rent and run is not an option...

Plus downlodes are pants.

Example Game of Thrones blu ray box set... You get family trees and maps etc.... Downlode is not even close

I used to have love film but I ran out of films worth watching within a few months. iTunes is annoying as the films I want to rent are buy only and vice versa.

Sky offer movies on demand too so that's another way blockbuster lose out.

Subtitle loss is a good point. The equality and disability access legislation would suggest it would be illegal not to provide a version with subtitles. Lots of websites got into bother for not being accessible via screen readers.

Exactly, at this rate what's the point of visiting town now, unless you want to buy stuff from the charity shop that is :|

Oh come on, stop being so negative!
Still lots to see and do in town, you could ...

Buy a copy of the Big Issue

Sign up to some £10 p/m (or whatever you can afford) charity thingy

Hand out Cigarettes to the Beggars

Take pictures of Plywood on boarded up shop window,

You forgot about feeding the pigeons. There's always pigeons

Our High St has a grand selection of 99p and £1 shops, along with shabby nail/tanning bars, Iceland, estate agents (how the **** do they survive?) and a dodgy butchers, plaus the smallest Boots you have ever seen:(
This country is in deep doodoo, because things are not getting better.:shake:

Just outside Glasgow there was a £1 shop that had to close and was selling things for 50p...how bad is that!

Sad sign of the times when the window cleaner has swapped his bucket for a sander and a tin of hammerite :D

I don't think any high street shops are safe. Be it huge franchise stores or small family run shops. Ever since the internet came and online shopping started it has completely changed the world. Royal mail took a big hit when Email suddenly became popular, music cds are slowly becoming obsolete since mp3's started to dominate the market. Hell even car stereos now come with an mp3/ipod adapter. DVDs/bluray are just about keeping afloat in stores, until online services such as love film finally take it over completely. The only stores that seem to keep business going are the fast food restaurants, that is until you can download an edible bigmac.

Yeah, now we have one of those even on our High Street.

My old man always used to say funerals were the best business to be in. No matter what happens with the world economy, credit crunches, war and depleted resources people will always die - and their loved ones will always pay in some shape or form to ensure they have a proper send off.

On iTunes you get DD audio and its 1080p video, albeit compressed a bit. The quality is comparable to Sky HD, so not quite up there with BD.

The high street is how the majority want it.

People have chosen how to buy stuff and this is the result.

I go into a town centre about 10 times a year, normally to take the kids to a toy shop.

The majority of my purchases are via Tesco, Amazon or eBay. For clothes I go to outlet centres and I think that covers the majority of my spending unless it is a specialist or specific item, them I buy from another online store.

Will I miss going to a highstreet? Not in the slightest. I'm glad I don't waste my spare time shopping. We used to spend so much time shopping when I was a kid, being dragged round catkins shops by my parents. I don't waste my time with my kids getting bad advice, stuck behind slow people, queuing in the car in and out of the shops, seeing what certain people wear, the language they use or get their 2nd hand smoke.

It's a shame, I use their online rental system, and for me at least, always quicker/more reliable than lovefilm .

:plusone: Even Love Fim etc wont be around for long, the big players. Apple,Sky,Time Warner, Sony will have it all wrapped up. My guess is they already had it planned a few years back, and knew exactly how it was all going to end up.

not condoning it, in any shape or form, however the majority of downloads, be it music, dvd, software etc seem to be from P2P sharing sites.

With the recession as it is as well, are people more likely to spend £15 in HMV or illegaly download themselves for £0.00
