Angela's 52, Week 26 night

love the idea, the focus doesn't look 100% to me but then it might be my crappy work monitor. The crops works really well imo :)

Thanks, no the focus doesn't look 100% I agree, however whenever I tried to sharpen, even a little bit, it looked over sharpenend!!! however, that could be my crappy monitor :lol:

Hi Angela, I really like the composition of this, and well done him for getting up in time

I think the problem is more the DoF because on my monoitor the front part of the image appears to be in focus but the back half is soft. Do you use a single focussing point? I only ask because before I thought about doing that I went to the zoo and when I came home found most of my pictures unusable as the DoF was shallow but the camera had focussed using 1 of the other 9 focal points :(

Aaah could be! I deleted from my camera as I dowloaded so I can't remember now. (took lots of shots in different formats!)

I have an essay this week so not a lot of time to play, but I may play and resubmit later. Thanks

I like that, the crop works really well and it's a great idea for the theme. It does look a little soft on the focus, but if you were really close, and recomposed that may account for it.

It's a great idea and I like the story behind the shot...

It doe's look a bit soft to me and I can't see one point it is sharp, so I think your focus was a bit off or a too slower shutter speed.

I like the fact you got down on his level as that always makes the shot more friendly and natural...

Good effort...

Ok so this is very norty really, thought about writing a letter in the sand, or making a letter out of stuff to take a picture of. It even crossed my mind to take a picture of a c of ps' i.e a plate of birds eyes :cuckoo: but in the end I thought of just one letter that means alot to me 'C'

I live by the sea, walk my dogs by the sea, drive by the sea everyday on my way to work and back. I look out of my study window at the beach huts and you got it, the sea. So it could really only be one letter, and a cheeky play with this weeks theme!!

There's that out of the box thinking I've come to expect from my fellow 52ers!

I like the picture, possibly improvement would be to move the horizon onto a third, the structure (what is that?) is nearly there, possibly a touch more to the left would be better.

Mark:thumbs:

Clever, never thought of the "C" Plus I like your idea for a C of Ps

I agree with Mark about the composition - this is definitely a shot that is crying out for the rule of thirds. However, you have done well to get the horizon horizontal, something I find very difficult on seascapes.

Great interpretation of the theme, Angela - I like your out-of-box (and on the beach!) thinking. :)

I agree with Mark and Simon - but it's still a very pleasing picture, and a gold star for getting it posted so early.

btw - I don't think I'd ever get any work done if I could see the sea from my study. We're only 5 miles inland, but even that's too far away!

Jean

Thanks guys, I did play with the rule of thirds, however there was always something taken out that I really liked, Like the nice grey cloud or the seaweed on the left, or the blue sky on the right, so I decided to leave it in.

The straightening tool (so glad I found this) came into use again, with just a hint of upping the saturation and Bob's you mother's brother!! :naughty:

It was a beautiful day here, as it is today, we really are getting some lovely sun and some fab clouds!!

Right off to get the next essay written!!:bang:

That's the problem!! Even on bad weather days it looks fab!!

Arggh loads to catch up on Angela as you posted 5 while I was away :D

so...

Identity: Love it :) Nicely lit and composed and simple :) and what do you mean fictional :D!!!!!

Wisdom: I'd agree with upping the contrast a little but the detail is good and sharp and of course it meets the theme really well :)

Relationships: Awww - good capture and although not studio posed says a whole load about their relationship :)

Poverty: The irony of seeing a grand building fall into such a state that it can be used as a shot for this theme is saddening isn't it? Well shot!

Up: Ha thats a great spin on the theme and will probably be the lowest 'up' submitted :) 70 years old- wow!!!! Good shot - I guess a fast shutter speed wasn't needed :)

Welcome back and a great set to catch up with :)

And like an idiot I missed your Letter entry!

Now that is out of the box :) and I like the comp (also appreciate the 'I don't want to lose bits to get it on the thirds' view :D I get that all the time :))

Nice one!

 cheeky indeed. Lovely shot.

This is a shot I;d love to have been cheeky with, and gotten away with it too

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I love this part of the beach too! we have two light houses, one on the beach and the one in the shot. I spent many a time swimming out to it at high tide (cos then you can reach the steps) and climbing up and walking round in it. They have renovated and sealed them now for their own protection....but I wonder if they will hold the same place in the next generations hearts!

Thanks everyone for the comments, I love that this is teaching me as I go along, and 14 weeks in feel like I have learnt soooo much!

i like you thinking

and the results are great too, im in the sod the rule of thirds sometime rules should be broken:)

Well done Angela, this weeks theme was tough to implement and you've thrown away the box, let alone got outside it :D... good idea, well implemented and whilst I normally try and hit the thirds, there are times I don't when I don't want to lose something either.

pssstt :suspect: ... you've got a couple of dust bunnies, but I won't tell anyone ;)

OMG hadn't even notice them....is this better!!

And that's the cloning tool added to my reportoire!!!!:D

Week 13 UP

2. tortoises do not care for having their photos taken and will move away mid shot!!

:bonk::bonk: Angela - so sorry I missed Week 13 UP - I've been having computer problems, but thought I'd caught up - just realised I haven't.:(

This is another of your out-of-the-box (literally!) shots and I love it together with the story behind it.:clap:

Your learning point#2 made me smile - it sounds as though Jake uses photo opportunities to practise his sprinting. :D

Jean

Yep, those bunnies are history :D

Thanks Jean, Jake certainly is an escape artist all right!! There are several things a lot of people don't realise about tortoises

1. they are really quick when they warm up :exit:

2. they are very clever (last year Jake watched our builders and when they weren't looking made a dash up the road, poor guys were so embarrassed):$

3. they are very good at climbing:lol:

 cheeky indeed. Lovely shot.

This is a shot I;d love to have been cheeky with, and gotten away with it too

Lovely shot from you again... your doing some great shots with the 40D so keep them coming...:clap::clap:

I did notice that you said you deleted your shots when down loading...may I suggest you stop doing this at the down loading part and wait until your absolutely sure you have got them coppied to your computer/disc...one day you my find something goe's wrong and it's always the shots you can never retake...:(

Don't risk it, it only take a second to reformat the card when your ready...I don't know anybody who deletes before viewing on there computer...

It's the safe way...

Thanks Spartacus I will stop deleting, I am working through the photoshop classroom book, and one of the lessons left it step up this way...I now need to go back and figure out how to change it.

Ok, I have just had the best day at Colchester Zoo ever!!!

Having to take pictures with a duo theme has been a real pleasure and gave me some focus rather than just taking pics of nice animals.

There were so many eligble shots from today which included, vultures, penguins, rhinos, zebras and rabbits. We also stumbled across a ewe that had just given birth and watched the lamb stand up for the first time and take its first steps!!!

However, I chose this shot, because these animals were so majestic, graceful, gentle, prehistoric that just being near them (and I got very close) made my heart beat faster.

Hope you like them too!!

MG_0858-copy.jpg

Lessons learnt.

1. The sigma 70-300 is a fab lens

2. Hubby n I need our own siggys so we don't have to share

3. You need a bag that makes changing lenses easy!!!

Lovely shot and a good interpretation. Love the angles of the necks in this one too... Sounds like you had a lovely time too

the angles are great as John said. have you tired added some contrast or clarity it migh give it some more punch as it looks a little flat at the moement :)

I tried to do something similar to this shot using horses.....and failed miserably. So well done

This is what I was thinking - but they are indeed lovely animals

It doesn't look as though the weather / light was really on your side - and as you have to point your camera at the sky for giraffes thats always going to make things tricky.

I'm with Ruth here - really well seen and shot - framing really works - just a little up in contrast would give it a bit of punch :)

But thats a tiny niggle - seeing it and shooting it are the hard bits I reckon and you've done that well Angela :)!!

Ahhhh - they make a lovely Duo. Are they mother and baby?

I agree with the other comments - the lighting wasn't really on your side and no doubt they didn't pose specially for you. It's not always easy working round the various restrictions, but it's a delightful picture of a remarkable animal. Well spotted!!! :D

Jean

Thanks guys, I had to take loads and loads of shots of the giraffes to get this one. I was tracking the taller of the two, when the smaller one moved in and bam!! shot got. I just kept smiling once I had it.

The day was awful, we were lucky to have no rain, but it was the merkiest day ever, good in that I can stay out for longer without fear of getting burnt (am very fair) but bad in terms of lighting.

I agree with the contrast, clarity views though, I can see how it might make the picture more striking, so will definitely give that a go later.

My absolute favourite pic was of a giraffes eye lashes, but it didn't fit the duo theme...

Like the giraffe pic, good spot with the angles of the necks, pull them together well.

Good effort that.

Ok, just for you Jean. The shot definitely doesn't fall into the duo theme as you can see. I have just played with it a bit and am not sure I am happy with the results, but here it is anyhoo.
IMG_0884-copy.jpg

Now you really are starting to product much better shots now...

That's a great shot and one I would be proud of...

Looks like everybody did some great shots this week but me...

Congratulations...
