Well the normal thing is to focus on the eyes if possible...eye contact works everytime...

The Canon 40D you used is such a great camera...yes I got one..
if you get the chance to borrow the 40D again retake the shot and use the AV setting...you will still need to tell the camera where to focus, it's got 9 focus point. But if you use Av setting you can step down the aperture a little is give you more of the shot in focus (depth of field) push the small button to the left under the button that removes the lenes and you will see what will be in focus at the time of taking the shot and not what you see in the view finder. Don't get put off with all this talk with settings keep to automatic if your not comfortable with any of this...
