Angela's 52, Week 26 night

Well the normal thing is to focus on the eyes if possible...eye contact works everytime...

Are you looking to get a new camera?

The Canon 40D you used is such a great camera...yes I got one..

if you get the chance to borrow the 40D again retake the shot and use the AV setting...you will still need to tell the camera where to focus, it's got 9 focus point. But if you use Av setting you can step down the aperture a little is give you more of the shot in focus (depth of field) push the small button to the left under the button that removes the lenes and you will see what will be in focus at the time of taking the shot and not what you see in the view finder. Don't get put off with all this talk with settings keep to automatic if your not comfortable with any of this...

That's better but could be pushed a bit more...I'd like to have try if you don't mind...

Both your last 2 images fit the bill really well.

Don't be discouraged by lack of comments, keep it up :)

Surprise - Striking, unusal shot that goes well with the theme. How did you do it?

Opposites - Nice take on the theme I like the relationship between the full and empty bottles.

Special - Nice shot. Like Spartacus said it needs a focus. If your dog had an open eye(s) it might give more contact with the subject but it could also change the feel of the shot and might end up not being what you wanted. I often find it difficult to decide if changes have worked. Well done.

I am hoping to get a 40D for my birthday very soon! This is such good advice and I really do appreciated it thanks.

Thanks toothie will do, normally I wouldn't give it a second thought, but just impatient to get my week six up. I am such a big kid!!:baby:

Thanks, suprise was just wordart printed out and hung upside down on the wall. I then focussed in so you couln't see the edges of the paper and it looks like its suspended in space.

Opposites works really well.

Special is a really special shot, but I do agree about the focus point. I think I'd have gone for focus on the eye area but stop down the aperture of the lens to probably f8 or maybe a bit more, to try and get the whole face in focus.

I'm not sure whether f8 would be enough or more than enough. If you're not happy with going that manual, set the camera in P mode, when you change the settings wheel the camera will go through a list of proper exposures (shutter speed and aperture), at least that's what my 450d does. P is better than Auto as it allows you control of the popup flash and you can shoot in RAW (if you're happy with that of course), it provides more control whilst taking away the dread of more manual settings.

:lol::lol::lol: I am a bit blinded by science with your comments to be honest, but I will write it all down and when I get my 40D I will play and see what I can achieve. Thanks for the advice. I love this photo of Lils, but the thought that I can improve it futher has me quite excited. I feel like a kid in a sweetshop!

What a lovely shot of a lovely dog. But please do tell me how you've managed to get an 8month old Cocker to....SLEEP???

Opposites and Special are both good shots!.

Opposites has a kind of bold statement kind of look (I think I know what I mean) with the empty bottle being useless and 'dead'. The muted tones and colours are okay by me!

Special - what a cutie :) I like the shot and the eye looks in focus to me although that might say more about my eyes :)

Two good ones - now you've a week to wait for #7 :)

Thanks Shorty, she really is a lovely dog. Getting her to sleep is easy. first walk 5:30am for about twenty minutes, second walk over the playing fields trying to keep up with our working black lab. (also a beauty) he can cover three football pitches in about 10seconds, is built like a stallion. Out for about an hour. I got the pics soon after this second outing, but she was recovered for our evening walk, another twenty mins.

Thanks Dark Star, Lilly's eye looks more in focus on the larger photo oddly.

The opposites shot was a go at being a bit arty, I like your interpretation of it far more than my concept however and may use it from now on if thats ok :naughty:

Sorry Angela, missed your Opposites shot as I tend just to catch up after I've submitted mine :(, and your obvious enthusiasm to get the next one in caught me out

I really like the Opposites shot, and prefer the more subtle quality of the first one. It works on a number of levels, empty/full, upright/lying down, and soft/hard, so well done , great DoF.

For your Special shot, I think she looks like a lovely puppy but agree with the comments about the focus point.

So what are you going to do for the rest of the week now

wait for your photos with a nice big glass of something nice!:naughty:

Sounds good to me  and I'm going to have a big JD and coke whilst I figure out how I'm going to set up my shot :naughty:

You caught me out (literally) too, Angela. I miss spending any real time on the computer for 2 days and there you are with 2 weeks' shots in the bag. :)

wait for your photos with a nice big glass of something nice!:naughty:

:lol::lol::lol: Enjoy :)

Week 5 Opposites: I prefer the second, more saturated one. I'm not sure why, maybe something to do with the symmetrical shapes of the bottles and the way they catch the light. Good interpretation of the theme and yet another 52er giving value for money with several 'opposites' in the one shot.

Week 6 Special: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. How special is she! You did very well not to wake her up, although she looks as though she could spring into action at any second. It is a gorgeous image taken with love.

On the technical side, I noticed you were using a borrowed camera and it's so much harder to use a strange camera than one you're familiar with. If that sounds like stating the obvious, I suppose it is, but it's so easy to forget things, and I don't suppose you had much time to get this shot before Lilly woke up. :D

Is she going to be a working dog like your Lab?

Jean

Is she going to be a working dog like your Lab?
Jean

Harvey is a working type lab, not a working lab iyswim. It means that he needs tons of physical and mental stimulation. He does obedience and may do agility later. As we live next to the sea (takes about ten mins to walk, but can see it from the doorstep) he does a lot of retrieval from the sea which is his favourite thing of all. he swims like a fish!

Lilly does well to keep up with him and theoretically can keep up, but as a show type cocker she is lazy! :D so the minute she's had her exercise she sleeps, hence the opportunity.

I've had several labs and they've always had a strong tendency to obey only if they feel like it! You've definitely done a good job on the training! I love to see them dashing in and out of the sea - good oppotunity for some action shots, too.

I haven't managed to persuade my current 2 (a pair of Yorkies) that the sea is fun - I think to them it's big and noisy and you can't drink it.

I bet the two of them keep you busy. :)

Jean

They certainly do Jean, and with two teenage boys work study and hubby I rarely stop, but as my nan used to say....you can stop once you're dead!!!

I just caught up with your last few photos - I rather like the simplicity of the opposites image - I like still life type images in paintings and I think this one works quite well.

The special photo is great too :)

Week 7 - Crowds

Well this week I have gone from an image from a point and shoot to an image that was captured on my iphone!

I apologise, but I was recently at the Ipswich vs Plymouth game (in the box so taken behind glass) and as I live in Brigadoon this is the closest I am going to get to a crowd this year.

Lessons learnt:

1. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear!

2. Switching from adobe elements 5 to 6 is only ok if you are proficient with the former :bonk:

3. Study really should come first

4. A twix in times of stress really is helpful :naughty:

Not too bad considering as it was a phone camera

Well for a camera phone it's ok...and it's a crowd all the same...and they did beat Plymouth Arygle...our local team...or was it a draw...tell I don't follow football...

Good luck with Elements 6, I've been playing around with it for months now and only just getting somewhere...keep going and it will pay off in the end...

Kenny's army we were in a glass box behind the crowd so there was no crowd behind me. :) I did have other photos but they all had the glass reflected in them, this was the clearest!

To be honest I did not have the time to give/think this week and I think the shot reflects this. I am not at all happy with it, but this week study did have to take precedence. Looking at others pictures and yours included I am determined to try better next week.

I also will (hopefully) be getting my canon 40D tomorrow :woot: so I am sure that will spur me on!!

Spartacus, it was indeed a draw and a pretty boring game as it goes, however having the chance to be in the box made up for it. ;) I am indeed perseveering with elements 6 and it is hard going, but I so want to learn to do the things I have seen on here!

For iphone shot it's not bad and hey, it's a people crowd, it's what was asked and delivered ;)

You wil LOVE getting ** DSLR :P [got mine a few days ago] it's amazing how much inspiration the excitment of a brill new camera gets you

Can't argue with that :D

Good luck with the 40D Angela- looking forward to seeing your first shots :)

At least you've got one in the bag for crowds - I'm lagging :)

Well it fits the theme and you have to work with what you've got so well done!

Good luck with the DSLR

Angela - with your hectic life, it's amazing that you get a shot in every week - using your iphone is perfectly ok!

You totally met the brief (which is more than I did!) and, even if you're not inspired by your shot I think you've done very well to avoid glare from the glass. It sounds as though if you'd waited for an exciting injury time winning goal you'd have been very disappointed. Well done.

I hope all the studying got done and you are finding time to play with your 40D. Have fun.:clap:

I've never used any version of Elements, but I'm sure it will get easier when you have more time to try different things out. :)

Jean

Considering it's with a phone, it's a good shot, nothing wrong with using what you have to hand though. It fits the theme well. Enjoy using the 40d, and I hope you have time in the studies to use it.

Thanks Jean and jgs001

I DID indeedy get my canon 40D this weekend. Hubby has been bitten by the bug so it made the convincing easier :D

I am (spookily) up to date with my study so have been having a play. I LOVE IT  and can't wait to get going with it.

Shorty I hope you are enjoying your DSLR too :D

Positively bustling compared to where I live. That's good using a camera phone, won't need those nasty DSLRs soon. :naughty:

Early 'Happy Birthday' to you Anglea. :)

errrr ... just one small problem - is hubby going to use your iphone or your old camera???

When's his birthday.

Look forward to seeing first pics from the 40D.

 No hubby has got the bug and bought a second hand 350D + lens (which is probably why I got my pressie early:D)

Just need to get out and about now and practise using them.

Glad you managed to get a picture in this week - and a camera is a camera is a camera :lol:

I'm really looking forward to seeing what you can do with your new camera

And I hope we get a better theme this week :bang:

Week 8 Wealth

I had the idea for this week from the very beginning as this is my youngest sons game. (He has every kind of monopoly there is, so I was spoilt for choice). However getting used to a new camera and still being new to photoshop, I hope I have done the idea justice.

I took 72 shots of this pic and whittled it down to this one.

wealth-copy.jpg

Lessons:

1. playing with a camera can teach you a lot.
2. try and get the picture before the daylight starts to disappear
3. getting the shot whilst no one son wants his taxi service is not the best idea!

It's a good shot, nice idea, I hadnt even THOUGHT of Monopoly, not that I know where it's kept

 well done

Well done, Angela. I like the composition a lot and I think you've done a good job on this. I sympathise over the light disappearing - you just get a setting you're happy with and then have to change it. :bang: Being rushed to provide a taxi service only makes it harder.:clap:
