Android photo backup

Yes
So I have 2 Android phones (don't ask) both linked to the same Google account. Google seems to like this and both phones can log into the same account at once.

On one phone I have "automatically backup photos" set to on. Every time I take a pic it syncs with Google which syncs it with my Macs. Awesome. I can also see these pictures in the photos app on my other phone (because online).

On the other phone, every time I try to set "automatically backup photos" to on, it gives an error that it it "unable to change account". The active account in Photos settings is set to "no account" but according to Google I can only change that when I have turned backup photos to on. At any rate it tells me "unable to change account" if I try to select it. FWIW it's running Ice Cream Sandwich. Yes, that's embarrassing to admit.

Any ideas? Google is strangely silent on all of this. Also, calling an app "photos" makes it really hard to Google for.....

OneDRIVE. Both of my android devices photos backup to it.

Thanks - but why won't the built in, been working for ages on one phone Google version work?

ETA: I bet I could get Dropbox working too but I actually like the Google version and since they wrote Android it should always work.

I really need to change my setup. Got android phone and every photo/video is copied to google photos and dropbox. Doubling my bandwidth usage for no real reason!

You can set up Google photos to only back up when the phone is connected to WiFi to save on bandwidth

Have you tried turning it off on the phone that works and then trying it? That would point to a conflict with having two phones trying to sync to the same account.

Thanks - I'll give that a go. I'll have to leave it turned off for a day or two though as Google settings seem to take a while to propagate.

Amazon backup is quite good. Even better if you have a prime subscription

I guess that's another option. But I'd really rather make Google backup work with my Google phone(s). I bet it won't be long before Amazon say you have to install their backup app from their dodgy app store.... :)
