And this weeks idiot of the lock down award goes to ...

More like go&wash....
Oi! :bat:
:p

Actually that's a good point, save's on soap and if anyone says you stink, I'll just say you are too f*****g close pal!

:D

First time I met my old friend he looked like he’d been attacked by wolves or had scurvy.... great patches missing out of his hair and half healed cuts on his scalp.

The story turned out to be, his wife is Italian and they were going over to see her family. The family live in the south of Italy and the weather was scorching at the time so she decided to cut her two boys’ hair short so they’d feel a bit cooler. My mate then said you may as well do mine as well. She started off fine, but the clippers were battery powered and the batteries ran out after doing half his head. Trouble is they also locked into his hair, so she had to cut them free with some scissors... the only pair she could find were some wallpaper shears, which were also blunt. She found some more batteries and carried on but they were half dead too and the same thing happened again. He’d wanted his beard trimming too but wasn’t going to risk it after all that!

So this vision of loveliness turned up at our house for the first time, with a mangled head with hair sticking up in tufts everywhere and a big scruffy beard. I’d never met him before (our two wives had got chatting at the school gates and become friends). He looked like he’d escaped from the local lunatic asylum so I’d assumed he was wasn’t quite all there... he was actually a fairly high ranking tax inspector. :$ I still take the mick out of him about it. :ROFLMAO:

I grabbed the beard trimmer off the shelf rather than digging out the better tool. 15 minutes later, with the battery definitely on its way out

I did my head with the beard trimmers.. They ran out of battery 3/4 of the way into my head. It was an interesting look for 24 hours.

It would be rude not to IMO :D

I remember a story from my school days, yes they did have books even then :p
Something to do with sailors shaving before reaching shore, but they decided to be fair and only do half their face in turn ( God knows why)
There was a squabble for some reason, and the razor ended up over board and a company of half shaved sailors :D

Since my last post.....and nowhere to buy proper hair clippers.......I was planning on using my very old but still reliable beard trimmer (something like approx 25 years old Remington MB40) on my hair!!!!!

Yesterday evening I was yet again looking to see if I could get hair clippers.

I found John Lewis had in stock a Babyliss "grooming set"...was going to click 'buy' but then read reviews and was disappointed to read that though good, the one area of weakness was head hair clipping!

So, once again checked the Wahl UK site and they had one cordless model I had tried to buy but stock went negative before made up my mind. However last night ~ yippee......stock...... clicked buy...... order processing. Just hope they come next week.

FWIW they were more than I was wishing to pay but once used approx 4 times they will have paid for themselves in not paying the barber. Fingers crossed I can get on with them...... likely with some support from SWMBO to help 'finish' my neck at the back.

PS I have been seeing the same barber for approximately 30 years but he had of late been doing fewer days in the barbershop i.e. semi retiring and though his son had done my cut a few times....,..not quite the same!

Its surprising the way the prices of a hair cut vary in a small area.
I've got 3 quite close. one run by women was my always "go to" 6 quid for a number 2 a neat tidy job too, eyebrows & neck shave.
Their prices increased steadily last time I went it was £12, the next time I went it was appointments only !
I didn't bother. making an appointment.
The other one I used intermittently. "traditional men's barbers" last time I went it was a total change of staff,
not one familiar face, £14! that used to be £7 . they didn't do a good a job that time either.
The one man band, an Asian guy, he does a quick all over #2 for 6 quid, and as good as the £14 bunch.

Yes. same here. The traditional barbers in my local area all seem to be "from" £15. I moved house a couple of years ago and have stuck with the asian barbers who I used before I moved, they were all very good and only charge about £7, including eyebrow and beard trim. But sadly I won't be going back, Covid-19 forced my purchase of my clipper set, which has made my barber redundant as far as I'm concerned. Maybe if I was younger and cared about my appearance it would be different.

I've always owned (hair) clippers, Just for a beard trim.
The problem with the DIY job is that I cant see the back very well and can't get the back tidy at #2 although having said that at the for'pny all off I inadvertently gave myself it doesn't matter. That begs the question do I stick with the crew cut ( which I may have got used to by then) or go back to a #2 once this mess is sorted?

Not paid for a hair cut in well over 30 years - Mrs Nod is a time served hairdresser so a gent's style (not that I've ever had any style!!!) is a piece of p155 for her, especially now it's a #1 buzz cut!

When I've done it myself, I've not had a problem doing the back to a buzz cut; just keep going over the back until you can't hear it cutting any more - job done!

Not sure that my experiment with a longer chin bit will last beyond the next cut - too much hassle and I hate sitting still for more than 5 minutes.

Long before the lockdown came upon us I'd settled on my retirement look: No 1 all over, once a week. Quick, effective and saves a fortune on hair shampoo...

No problem with that either but I was referring to #2 and keeping the back tidy.

So was I.

I can't see the back at all when I'm cutting it, but I can't see it afterwards either so I'm just guessing that it's OK..

My set has plastic guards from 1 through to 7, I use 3 on the sides and back, 7 on the top and 4 on my beard. There are also 2 shaped ones for the ears and they're the only ones I struggle with.

Could you get yourself a cheap external webcam with a long lead, and set it up behind you in flipped mode to give a mirrored view of your bonce back?

Do they do them in wide screen :exit:

I guess I could, But it all sounds rather complicated to me, besides the bathroom is some yards from the computer screen.
I guess I could also buy a decent sized mirror :D

The computer screen is pretty wide so I guess that's covered :p

Sounds like I am going to have some fun(?) the first time I use the hair clippers..........some good insights (tips?) in posts above :)

I borrowed my sons Philips 5000 hair clippers, started off doing my own hair cut & gave up and asked my wife to do it. Happy with the result, I just need to find some clippers of my own now. They are as rare as toilet rolls were in March....

These are the model I have ordered.....................and it seems (because there is qty & add to basket showing) that they still have some stock?

the use of the word buzz cut.

According to the oracle (Mrs Nod), any all-clipper cut is a buzz cut. Sorry for any confuzzlement!

Could do with a built in polarizing filter to deal with the reflections too... (Speaking for myself, obviously!)

Lots of choice on Amazon

Having used my sons Philips cutters I have decided to buy some like them. Although Philips quote £55 Amazon resellers were asking up to £180 (now £80) but they can keep them at that price. Boots list them at £41.25 but they are out of stock. I can wait........

That's not a bad price for them either, especially since they seem to actually be in stock!

Personally i would go for the classic super taper model that the barbers use, unless you really wanted cordless.

Seems to be in stock here:-

Thanks for the pointer...........

I did um & er when doing my initial reading up and frankly if I had seen a corded one 'then' might have bought one, accepting the flexibility 'limitation'.

But all things considered cordless at the price point was ok'ish. As for cordless vs corded.......as I will mostly be using them in the bathroom (mirror and cleanup considerations) cordless choice wins.

Time will tell as to whether l made the right choice???

I'm wary of most cordless things TBH Cordless vacuums for instance need to be stored where they can be plugged in, instead of hidden away in the cupboard under the stairs.
I'm sure ( well hope anyway) the battery life is better now than it was, as for clippers, they barely did a hair cut on one charge.
( they weren't cheap ones either, and got ditched in favour of corded ones)

Fair point.......cannot now recall the (claimed) run times but did not jump out as an issue!

FWIW, my barber over the years updated his kit, for finishing he used to use a cutthroat razor but then a few years back had small cordless clippers just for that purpose which was always dropped back into its charging cradle. Latterly, they had (as well as all the corded Wahl ones) a corded/cordless one.......plugged in as necessary :)

My hair may be getting long but it is thin filaments so not a tough "job" to cut through

Mine did that too.
But again you have to think about where you will site the charging cradle at home, maybe I'm a bit OCD but I don't like clutter, certainly not of that type ;)

Without rechecking I cannot recall if the one I picked uses a changing cradle......but it is Li-ion so provided I avoid it completely discharging ~ fingers crossed

Having a fairly compact house, wall space is at a bit of a premium so I ran an extension lead in some conduit behind furniture to give us 4 sockets in the cupboard under the stairs. I mounted the sockets about 4' off the floor so they're easy to get at and any cordless stuff gets charged in there.

That's all very well but that would mean crossing a door way here ;)

Not ideal then!
