I have never enabled 2 stage verification on my Amazon account (despite endless requests to do so).

Over the last two or three weeks every time I log in or make a purchase Amazon requires me to authenticate by sending (by email) a One Time Password.
I would prefer not to bother with that procedure.
On searching Amazon to establish how to turn off this process I am presented with:-

How do I turn off Amazon verification?
To disable Amazon's Two-Step Verification, please follow these steps:
1. Go to the Amazon desktop site and hover over your name.
2. Click on Hello, Your Name and then click Your Account.
3. Click Login & security.
4. Click Edit next to Two-Step Verification (2SV) Settings.
5. Click Disable Two-Step Verification.

However, there is no step 5 and no apparent means to disable Two Step Verification.

Anyone on here know if this security measure is now compulsory.
Trying to get help from Amazon is an exasperating ordeal.

Amazon have recently done a lot of changes behind the scenes where their guides and help files no longer provide the right information, we've just had issues on our seller site and even the agent we were dealing with couldn't follow the guidelines for what we needed to fix our issue due to the changes. Dealing with anything Amazon is a nightmare.

Not yet but highly recommended. It's hard for criminals to bypass and whatever makes it hard for them adds to your security.

You may find that if you did disable it any unauthorised activity against your account would be regarded as your own fault and you would then be expected to take the loss.

"as your own fault and you would then be expected to take the loss" .......... Yes, I could see that happening.

Dan said "Dealing with anything Amazon is a nightmare "........................ I think that they have a policy of making it hard for customers to communicate.

Amazon customer service is second-to-none IME with them (over the last twelve years). The trouble is you can't easily get through by phone. :banghead:

The secret is to use their online chat; I've used it several times and my problems were sorted in just a few minutes. :D(y)

I've not come across this yet.
But it wouldn't cause me a problem if it was thrust upon me.
After all banks and CC providers already do this randomly.

I emphatically concur. They are very quick in responding to and rectifying problems (y)

Sometimes, but they are often atrocious. I have had a problem with my kindle. Went through some fault finding and was asked to send them the serial number - this was on the 21st Feb. Numerous meals back and fore which take 24hrs to get a reply. Was on the phone last night where they again asked for the serial number. Another mail today, can you confirm the serial number. ffs. Sent a reply immediately and know it will be 24hrs before they reply back...
I am sure they are just doing this as slowly as possible in the hope that i will give up.

I would recommend setting it up, recently someone managed to get hold of my log in details, no idea how and I kept getting text messages with a 2 stage verification passcode so obviously they were trying to buy something, I also deleted my payment card and if I ever need to buy something from them I re enter it and delete it as soon as I can.

Never seen two stage verification. Never been nagged about it either. Weird.

I inadvertantly signed up to prime.
I cancelled this but a few days later my wife took a call supposedly from amazon telling me I was due a refund as I had been incorrectly charged and wanting bank details, obviously a phishing call but how they got my details is a mystery.
I signed up for two stage verification ,it is wghat rhe banks use and to me is a lot safer there is no reason not to have it.

My MiL has had several "Amazon prime" phishing calls. She's never had a computer. At a guess, the one your wife took said that you were about to be charged 39.99 without mentioning any currency and asking her to press 1 to speak to an advisor.

Thanks everyone - I have set up 2 stage verification. Best option for security !!

A bit of a turnaround. Managed to get somebody to call me back. After me whinging about the speed of replies they said they'd send a replacement. So I now have in my hand a brand new 32GB Oasis. The kindle that was causing the problems was an eight year old touch so a fair upgrade!
